In the realm of philosophy and similar intellectual endeavors, the concept of 'relevance' appears to be a crucial variable for deriving pleasure. Through self-evaluation, individuals align their self-definition with pursuits they deem relevant, thereby avoiding psychological discomfort or pain. This form of pleasure is anticipatory in nature, as it is not directly sensory but rather cognitive. It arises from the individual's ability to foresee future social interactions that involve comparisons with others who are closely related in terms of the pursuit in question. Such comparisons can yield various rewards, ranging from tangible benefits like financial patronage to more abstract gains such as a sense of comparative advantage. Therefore, the pleasure derived from these intellectual pursuits can be understood as a cognitive payoff, contingent on the individual's predictive abilities and the social context in which these pursuits are embedded in relation to constrained social desires, or put another way a persons self evaluative maintenance drives.
