A note re: changes to Patreon fees from Rick

By now, you’ve perhaps had a chance to digest recent changes to the way Patreon has decided to handle payment fees, effectively shifting certain charges from creators to patrons. As I understand it, the change acts as a new surcharge upon your pledge.

This change came as a surprise to me, frankly, and you’re learning about it shortly after I did. From the reaction I’ve seen on social media, not everyone is happy about it, and some patrons may stop their pledges altogether as a result.

Obviously, this change is out of my hands: Patreon did not give creators the option to keep the status quo, where payment fees were absorbed on the creator side.

All this to say, were these added fees to affect your decision whether to pledge or not, I would understand. I am primarily sending this note to ensure you know where the change originated and my feelings about it.

I know you work as hard for your money as we on the roundtable do, and do not take your support for granted. If you choose to stick with your pledge despite the change, we appreciate your continued support. If you decided to adjust your pledge, we’d understand. And, should these fee changes make you reconsider pledging at all, we’d be no less grateful for you being part of our journey.

Take care, everyone, and best of the season to you and yours.

Ekosi,

Rick
