Indeed, was tempted to include some anecdote's about the ships voyage but decided against it because of video's like that (I'll still cover the Dogger Bank incident briefly though when talking about the Anglo-Russian Treaty).

2025-02-09 13:43:30 +0000 UTCMassie's Nicholas & Alexandra is still great read for painting a picture of them. Nicholas is one of those interesting characters that had history fallen a bit differently I think would actually be remembered as a competent Tsar because of his reforms between 1906-1914 (and without the February Revolution I think it's almost inevitable that the Entente would have won the war in 1917 and Russia emerged as a significant force). That's not to say he was actually competent, but I tend to think his (very obvious) failings are emphasised more than say Alexander I's are, because of his eventual fate. No doubt about his despotism though, it would almost be comedic his regular professions of love for his people whilst remaining as detached as possible from them in every sense.

He may not have been a particularly nice man and was certainly a violent despot in the true sense of the word but his family always look so young and innocent. Such a shame what happened to them. Up next The Tangier Crisis. Things are starting to get exciting

2025-02-08 13:31:48 +0000 UTCFantastic as always. A note on the "debacle" where Russia lost its navy: I can whole heartedly recommend that everyone go watch the two videos on the Second Pacific Squadron by Drachinifel on YouTube. However bad you think it was handled, the truth is worse.
