Rough cut: Microsoft Response Point
Added 2024-09-26 02:09:27 +0000 UTCI think a few different people asked for this so I figured I might as well share it - this is the roughcut of the Microsoft Response Point video I mentioned in my last post. It's missing a ton of on screen graphics, but nothing that really hurts the narrative (you can fill it in with your imagination easily) and it's not like the narrative doesn't have bigger problems anyway.
This is an hour and 45 minutes long and is absolutely not part of the Cathode Ray Dude Meta. If I knew how to cut out 65% of this I would have done it already, and I'm not convinced that I won't eventually figure it out.

I cannot wait to see the final version. Honestly, if you added the missing graphics, etc., there is no reason why this cannot be on your channel. One perfectionist to another: this is good. Let the world see this!

I'm usually more on the side of the programmer vs the user, but in a perfect world, the programmer would be given the tools and opportunity to change things so they make the user happy, regardless if he's wrong.

2024-09-28 02:15:12 +0000 UTCI'm not a phone guy at all (though I keep running into PBX enthusiasts in the retro space and I have to start wondering if I need to get a PBX to be "truly retro") and never understood the appeal of doing PBXs but I understand it more now after watching this video. Thanks. I'll be in the biased minority of "honestly this is good as it is; just needs all the other inserts added in". I do have to wonder what makes something like this no longer viable to actually do; would the pharmacists in Kentucky just use cell phones as over-engineered walkie talkies now?

2024-09-27 22:19:55 +0000 UTCas you touched already the AVM Fritzboxes: The "Digitalisierungbox" of Deutsche Telekom (marketed to small businesses, small AVR, 2-4 'lines', 4 to 16 extensions) are still in this alley. manufactured under license by companies Zyxel and Bintec under the design rules of DT. But they have other severe problems. in most cases they have the agility of a Synology NAS with all possible Apps installed at once.... because they actually try to accomplish too much in a desktop PBX. But off course i do not ask for a video on those, since i doubt that anybody outside of Germany would be intersted in that.

PABXs are exactly the kind of stuff that I wondered about growing up. Side note I am absolutely addicted to Little Guys... The video series not the people, I prefer those on the taller beefier side. 😂🤣

Turns out watching a whole almost 2h video about PBX in general, and this quirky unit in particular is something your audience can receive quite well :) I'd say you shouldn't be afraid of learning towards the long side if the video requires so (maybe take the opportunity to add an intermission), but even if you decide to cut some footage I think you can end up with an insightful video.

2024-09-27 03:52:19 +0000 UTCThis video is brilliant. Probably the best way of framing it on youtube is as an unknown "Microsoft" failure, but actually a really impressive one. It's obviously a journey, but it might not be best to keep mentioning it / qualifying it as that at the beginning, as it could put people off before they get into it. I agree with others that it could be split up, but the really interesting bit is in the middle (which also takes the most time), so I don't think the hook / intro would be enough for the average youtube viewer to watch three parts.

As a software engineer, I hear that "running a startup inside a megacorp" line with disturbing regularity, and it's supposed to be a code phrase for moving fast and having impact, but as this proves out it's really a code phrase for half-assing an MVP and getting out of dodge immediately after the first check lands.

2024-09-26 04:31:20 +0000 UTCsmall corrections from an avid Fritzbox user: the manufacturer is just called AVM - the GmbH is like the english Ltd or Inc. Also they mainly make home WiFi routers/ modems with an integrated PBX (and many other features like DECT base station, smart home hub, VPN server,…). Many users never use the PBX part or just a very small portion of it like the answering machine or the call blocking feature. The main reason people buy them and and like them so much is that they combine all those features or otherwise competently different different devices into one neat little box with an intuitive GUI and very long software updates with new features. Last year for example they added Wireguard support for their 7 year old DSL router - the 7490. I don’t know any other router makers that do this.

Being serious, this feels salvageable to me. Maybe could do with a bit more setup of concepts for people less aware of the wonderful world of PBXes, and some tighter cutting of the first half of the demo. The climax rant of its flaws is just under an hour in, I felt my interest going away a bit until that point. Also, if I can self advertise for a second, I have a mirror of the Microsoft download center. Unfortunately I don't currently have much about Response Point there, other than a flyer. I've been meaning to pull in several thousand more deleted files from circa 2000 - 2019, but I have a goldmine of links for you from that unfinished archiving project.
