Teaser: Weird cameras

This is a pair of "analog HD" security cameras; literally 720p and 1080p (respectively) cameras that transmit their images down coax using analog signals. I don't fully understand the technology yet - there are several different standards and close to zero documentation, so I have a lot of grueling research to do, but at least one of them uses a spec that is, in no uncertain terms, "NTSC composite except we turned up the bandwidth."

Had no idea this technology existed until I stumbled on these at RePC and thought to look them up. Turns out there are fully *FIVE* standards for better-than-480i video over coax, all designed for security camera use. It's wild how much technology exists in the world that we never hear about because it's not "sexy."

The only conversation you can find online about any of these technologies is people on reddit asking which one they should buy; nobody cares about how it works, and nobody seems to have noticed that it's HD composite analog video. Honestly this is even cooler than WVHS to me, partially because it's currently being made and you can get a complete camera and recorder (or converter) setup for under a hundred bucks.

Bonus: images from each camera (720 and 1080, respectively) showing what most of my office/studio looks like most of the time, haha.

I know some HD over coax cameras were basically just HDSDI by another name. In fact I’ve used a cheap one into a video router (and an audio embedded) so I could remotely operate and view a radio studio from another city. (The camera just so I can see the guest and make sure they’re in position etc)

btw epic rack in the background 😳
