An abbreviated History of Otinth and Sedisia
- c. -1000 - 500 RM: the Adhu Atan people emerge in the southwest of Llachatul following the Fading of the Fourth Age, where they spread across the Parnasian Mountains and the Urahash Massif, where they settled in pastoral communities
- c. 600 - 800 RM: increased slave raids and banditry along the coasts of Seas of Durahrat and Abarullia forces the Adhu Atan people north. Their ancestors will go on to found Raong.
- 777 RM: acting on a prophecy from the Scripture of Shadow, a mission from the Church of Undying Machine arrives in present-day Otinth, establishing a colony and church there that swiftly takes control of the surrounding region. The native Adhu Atans pose little threat to this colony at this time.
- c. 800 - 900 RM: the Church of the Undying Machine has gained a foothold in the area, and establishes the Holy Land of Rachanael - an independent entity outside of the control of the Korachani empire. It establishes the city of Satachan and founds the Templars of the Machine as its military and raids the surrounding lands for slaves and resources, who are indoctrinated into the ways of the Church of the Undying Machine. The city grows on the backs of their labours, becoming a major presence in the area, its slaving ships becoming a ubiquitous sight in the Sea of Orrida.
The Actions of Satachan prevents surrounding regions from developing and they remain as disparate communities, none of which are allowed to evolve into a threat to oppose the Holy Land of Rachanael. - c. 990 RM: the city of Evhran emerges to oppose Satachan, rallying disparate peoples to its banner, rapidly growing into a refuge to those who have been preyed on by the Holy Land of Rachanael. The Vethrandi family emerges as the main player in this area.
- c. 1000 RM: tensions rise between the Holy Land of Rachanael and Evhran and its vassals. Skirmishes along their tentative borders increase.
- c. 1000 - 1134 RM: the Venthrandi family continues to unify the lands east of Satachan, finally establishing the monarchy of The Vethrand in 1134 RM.
- c. 1100- 1200 RM: the Holy Land of Rachanael continues to spread north in its search for whatever secrets were promised in the Scripture of Shadow. Expansive umbra mines are established in the Maihaddun basin, making the region rich. Tensions with The Vethrand continue.
- 1134 - 1179 RM: over the next decades the influence of The Vethrand expands with its territories, reaching as far east as Gnoth and as far west as the Urahash. The area becomes known as the Kingdom of Vethranda in 1179 RM.
- 1183 - 1241 RM: tensions escalate between Satachan and Evhran and war breaks out, embroiling the region for decades. Resources are wasted in the conflict and both sides suffer pyrrhic losses, though Vethrana gains the upper hand and in a siege lasting the entirety of the summer of 1241 RM it topples Satachan and destroys its cathedral, crushing the will of the Holy Land of Rachanael, which soon after loses the war, fleeing east to Korachan. Vethranda expands into the void left by the fleeing power, rapidly reclaiming all industrial operations left behind by Satachan and its vassals.
- 1241 - c. 1250 RM: Satachani refugees filter east across the Gate of Erebeth, dispersing as refugees into the Korachani empire. Many of them find their way into the Shadow March, becoming Petitioners of the Machine.
- c. 1250 - 1500 RM: The Templars of the Machine fracture, with some serving as leaders to the fleeing refugees. Others remain in the southwest of Llachatul, where they roam the area as mercenaries, spreading their belief in the Undying Machine to lands where the Korachani empire had never reached.
Despite this, a particular sect amongst them turns to the worship of a corrupted depiction of the Undying Machine in their desperation. By around 1500 this corrupted idol, which they carried with them in their travels, becomes known as the Chained God, and worship of it slowly spreads via trade to Vethranda, gaining a foothold as a mystery cult, never gaining widespread recognition but becoming pervasive. - c. 1600 - 1635 RM: belief in the Chained God continues to spread silently in Vethranda, challenging the strength of the Vethrandan faith. Religious conflict escalates, and in 1632 RM those faithful to the Chained God emerge from the shadows en masse against the monarchy and its church. The next three years are marred by bloodshed, with the worshippers of the Chained God being slaughtered and executed in their thousands. As their numbers begin to dwindle a large army from the north, headed by mercenary templars comes to their aid, marching against the church, destroying its major bases and decimating its armies. In its place is the Chained God elevated to the only deity, and the sovereign rule of The Vethrand is shattered. While it remains in control of Vethranda, it no longer wields the absolute power it once did, sharing control of Vethranda with the church of the Chained God.
- 1662 RM: the Vethrandan house is but a puppet of the Church of the Chained God, and by 1662 RM it falters without an heir, and the region becomes a theocracy under full control of the Church of the Chained God.
- 1662 - c. 1800: the surrounding lands fracture under the change in regime, devolving into disparate city-states held together by what little influence the Church of the Chained God is able to maintain. The Church is unable to fully control each of the city-states and concentrates instead on securing them through their faith, which remains one of their few unifying facets. Each city-state takes on its own character through the unique resources it possesses.
- c. 1900 RM: after decades of dwindling reserves of umbra, and increased Atramental taint across the entire region, the mines of Maihaddun are abandoned. This coincides with a shift in power across Vethranda as the city of Haii absorbs surrounding cities, becoming a major power that contends with the dominance of the Church of the Chained God in the region.
- 1911 RM: Haii overthrows the theocracy maintained by the Church of the Unchained God, establishing its own government, though the Chained God continues to be worshipped by the masses.
- 1985 RM: Haiian culture expands to many surrounding cities, many of which also fall under its control as vassals, and in 1985 RM it establishes the empire of Sedisia, which over the next century expands farther north. To the west Vethranda consolidates its power, venturing east close to the newly-established border with Sedisia, where deep strains of umbra are said to be located. The area is fortified and defended against potential Sedisian attack as siphon engines are erected in the area and mines are dug.
- c. 2160 RM: the first Korachani colonists arrive in the old territories of the Holy Land of Rachanael. There is conflict with Vethranda, though the Korachani settlers gain a foothold in the Mhuthashi peninsula establishing various settlements and ports there, the largest of which will go on to be Ohdurtuar.
- 2238 - 2600 RM: the colony of Ohdurtar is established by Korachani settlers and is well-defended, guarding the shallow sea of Abarullia. A large harbour is constructed there where new arrivals - workers, patricians and soldiers - steadily arrive over the coming years.
These new settlers push north between Vethranda to the west and Sedisia in the east, reaching as far north as the Oreahash, where major logging industries are established. The arrival of this common enemy eases tensions between Vethranda and Sedisia, though the entire region becomes unstable with the appearance of this new power. - c. 2600 - 2626 RM: clashes and border disputes become more common as the Korachani colonists expand. The conflict escalates into a three-sided war in c. 2600 around the region of Atilipho, which in c. 2555 is found to be rich in umbra reserves. The main players in the conflict are Korachan and Vethranda.
In 2626, following close to a year of pushes west, deeper into Vethrandan territory, Korachani forces manage to take the major crossings of the river Am Tuahen, depriving Vethranda of a way to push east. This allowed Korachani forces to root themselves in the Atilipho region where siphon engines and deep mines were established to take advantage of the umbra reserves located there. - 2626 - c. 2640 RM: cut off from its main agricultural territories, and suddenly without some of its larger more industrialised cities, Vethranda suffers. Belief in the Chained God wanes and a secular order rises in the region of Mithrent to challenge the waning theocracy
- 2643 RM: the city of Mithrent has grown into the major political power in Vethranda, challenging both the Church of the Chained God, and the Korachani colonies. With help from Tataran sympathisers who hope to profit from the umbra reserves in Atilepho from the south, Mithrent marches against the powerbases of the Chained God in both Vethranda and Sedisia, with Tataran providing supplies and naval support in the south.
- 2643 - 2671 RM: war engulfs the entirety of the Vethrand region, with many attacks against the siphon engines and umbra mines of the Atilipho, weakening the Korachani defence, which is unable to mount an adequate defence in light of its distance from the empire. Reinforcements arrive over the years, though this is in a piecemeal fashion, and many ships do not make it through the Tataran blockade.
Sedisia and Vethranda pool their resources against the Mithrenti attacks, but its military might is more than enough to combat them. As the Korachani defence in the south falters, Mithrent concentrates its forces against the east, crashing against the fortified lines of Sedisia, which repel it.
Mithrent takes abandoned Korachani defences and fortifies the south as Vethrandan forces push south against it, weakening it, stalling any future offensives. - 2671 RM: weakened, and cut off from further reinforcements, the Korachani colony of Ohdurtar is abandoned. Tataran ships allow its people to flee east, and many of its harbours and cities are taken by Tatar
- 2671 - 2674 RM: Mithrent is taken by Vethranda and the last of its fighters are forced into the Tataran cities, eventually forcing the Tataran occupation out. With the Korachani influence excised from the area and the actions of Mithrent ended, peace is brought to Vethranda and Sedisia, which work in re-establishing their territories
- 2674 RM: after a few years of rebuilding Vethranda and Sedisia clash as they attempt to redefine their borders. Both regions claim Atilipho and surrounding lands that are said to have large umbra reserves, and as a result each nation draws up its own version of their borders, leading to a large contested area that remains to this day. Below this contested area is an area that is ignored as claiming it will invalidate their more important claims to the north.:
This contested area is constantly patrolled and any movements into will draws the wrath of the other nation. - 2674 - 2712 RM: Worship of the Chained God remains strong in Sedisia, while its power wanes in Vethranda following the actions of Mithrent, whose ideals persist there despite its defeat. In the Mhuthashi peninsula the remnants of Mithrentish and Tataran settlers remain there, though they eventually become assimilated by Vethrandan culture as its own influence continues to expand.
- 2732 - 2735 RM: an enigmatic figure from the wilderness to the northeast appears in the north of Vethranda. Claiming to be a scion, the theocracy immediately condones this claim as blasphemy, encouraging its laity to do the same, but a cult of personality rapidly appears around the scion, who is known as the Vhocent. He gains a massive following in the city of Otinth in the north of Vethranda, leading to a religious schism. TheVhocent proves to be a shaper of incredible prowess and annihilates the city of Evhran, leaving it an Atramental wasteland in its place. This attack leaves the nation leaderless, wallowing in chaos. He rallies nobles and other leaders to his cause and sets a new capital in Otinth, from where the remnants of the theocracy are obliterated. Late in 2735 RM the Vhocent and his newly-appointed parliament declare the birth of the nation of Otinth, and Vethranda is no more.
- 2735 - c. 2800 RM: the Atramental aftermath of the Vhocent’s attack on Evhran continues to expand, leading to many people becoming displaced from their homes as over a thousand square-miles of land become irrecoverably corrupted.
- 3133 RM: Ezasuhi immigrants arrive in the southwest of Llachatul and make contact with Raongi natives and the people of Otinth. The Otinthi military reinforces its borders and pushes back against any perceived inclusions into its own territories, though the colonists focus their efforts around the Parnasian Mountains. This causes the Vhocent to close off the borders of Otinth to both trade and travel, and his parliament - made up of shapers indoctrinated to his secretive teachings - becomes increasingly tyrannical over the struggling populace.
- 3186 RM: an Elatian embassy is established in Otinth following years of tentative relation-building.
- c. 3200 - c. 3400 RM: Otinth becomes increasingly isolated from the rest of Elyden. Its lack of a presence on the world market sees it struggle next to other nations. Its borders are fortified in this time, and its armies are bolstered to defend against an enemy that does not exist.
Sedisia, seeing this, is forced to increase its own defences, beginning a cold war that characterises tensions between the two people to the present day. Despite the threat of war, neither side makes a move against the Atilipho, which remains unoccupied, its borders heavily fortified on both sides. - 3381 RM: an Elatian delegation is sent into Otinth following the closure of its borders and subsequent expulsion of Elatian diplomats the previous year after a change in political attitude and increased insularism in Otinth.
- 3382 - 3399 RM: Elat declares war against Otinth following the execution of Elatian diplomats sent there. The war results in Raong also declaring war on Otinth, as part of its alliance with Elat, though it effectively remains neutral, providing medical support and equipment. The war ends with Elat advancing its territories farther east, and Otinth surrendering. This further increases Otinthian seclusion and misanthropy.
