Here is the fact box for the Pantheon Isles. This will be the focus of the next high-res and textless atlas maps that will be published next week, exclusively for Acolytes, followed by the normal version and encyclopaedia entries the week after that. Thanks all for your support :) As always, feel free to point out typos in the comments ;)
This is another of those regions that I wrote in the lore of Elyden for close to 15-years, which I've really been looking forward to getting finished as a map. Of course, originally, it was nothing more than a throwaway name and a LOT of islands jutting out into the ocean, so I had quite a bit of work to do to flesh it out, though I'm pretty happy with the result.
An Abbreviated History of the Pantheon Isles
- c. 500 RM: first documented use of the name Katobragha with reference to the archipelago today known as the Pantheon Isles.
- c. 820 RM: founding of the Katobraghan Republic in the city of Todrra, bringing together an alliance of as many as a dozen city-states and their vassals.
- 1003 RM: the elected emperor Brui refuses to hand over his powers at the end of his term. maintains control and eliminates rivals, maintaining the seat of power until his death, whereupon his son Boruoi assumed power, giving rise to the Katorbraghan monarchy.
- c. 1294 - 1315 RM: the Katobraghan monarchy in Todrra struggles to maintain control over the hundreds of disparate islands and territories under control. Its coffers begin to struggle and some islands break away from its control, becoming independent, including the isles of Marad and Belashas. In 1311 RM, in a bid to raise money, it put many high-ranking positions for sale to the highest bidder. This opened the door to a flood of corruption, and the influx of money, intended to be used to repair coastal defences, was instead squandered on projects of self-aggrandisement that ultimately spelt the end of the Katobraghan monarchy.
- c. 1320 RM: a group of militants carry out a coup within the city of Todrra, ousting its executing the last queen and her advisors, setting up an Autocracy. They rapidly gain the support of a scattering of cities, including Oneli, in the west, and Xagadrra in the east - these cities become the backbone of the resultant Ghazharid Autocracy, which, over the coming decades takes over the majority of the peninsula and the surrounding archipelago.
- c. 1340 - 1400 RM: the Ghazharid Autocracy has subjugated the myriad settlements and islands of the Katobraghan Archipelago
- c. 1400 RM: refugees fleeing the tyranny of the Katobraghan Archipelago go west and settle in Rhea, specifically the coastal city of Zarataba, which becomes a metropolis over many years.
- c. 1510 RM: the Ghazharid Autocracy of the Katobraghan Archipelago sends envoys to Rhea with demands that it extradite those refugees who fled its lands and settled Zarataba, whom it considers enemies of the state. Rhea refuses and declares its cities a safe haven for all refugees with a just cause. In response, Katobragha sends agents and operatives to Zarataba to assassinate its expatriates, but they accomplish little.
- 1511 RM: Katobragha declares war on Rhea. It is a desperate gesture by an insular tyranny that has little relations with the outside world and is largely meaningless. Rhea is a much larger kingdom, with far more resources and is defending its home from invaders that arrive in a piecemeal fashion, with little means of landing due to the natural cliffs surrounding their main target - the city of Zarataba. The Rhean navy is stationed in the Sea of Eruthrea, where it awaits invading ships, easily taking them down. The few attacks that reach land are nullified by the defence, which includes many of the expatriates from the Katobraghan Archipelago, defending their new home and freedom with their lives.
- 1511 - c. 1550 RM: this fruitless war continues for decades, and every ship sent west is a major dent in the coffers of an autocracy that is growing increasingly desperate, out of touch with the reality that its rule is waning. Though never officially ended, the war effort dwindles by c. 1550 RM as the Katobraghan Archipelago falls into disrepair, their myriad coastal towns falling victim to Tethysian pirates as the Ghazharid Autocracy does little to safeguard its lands.
- 1525 RM: the Venthiri explorer Bohmius first catalogues the Katobraghan archipelago in the name of the Korachani empire, naming it the Pantheon Isles, after the many deities of the Thetishi nomads. Over the years this name would become more common and with increased trade and communication across distant realms, it would overtake the usage of Katobragha by c. 3000 RM.
- c. 1560 RM: the Ghazharid Autocracy holds up in its fortress in the mainland city of Todrra, where it lives out its last years in decadence, squandering the remnants of its riches on hedonistic pursuits at the expense of facing the reality of the world around them. This marks the beginning of the downfall of the Ghazharid rule over the Pantheon Isles.
- c. 1630 RM: the last remnants of the Ghazharid Autocracy die in self-imposed exile within the hedonistic halls of their stronghold in Todrra leaving the Pantheon Isles fragmented and in chaos, targets to corsairs and pirates.
- c. 1660 RM: the city of Xagadrra has amassed a large loyal following concentrated around the peninsula of Karaxhanes, even as the rest of the Pantheon Isles struggle in the power vacuum following the disappearance of the Ghazhaid Autocracy. Xagadrra and its allies become a powerful economical force in the region, a backbone around which other struggling peoples aspire to.
- c. 1800 - 2400 RM: a period of continued decline in the Pantheon Isles, where the outermost isles of the archipelago are subjected to countless pirate raids, leading to their effective desertion. People move inland around more easily defensible coastal areas between the Karaxhanes and Bhalassian peninsulas.
- c. 1900 - 2000 RM: first recorded instance of Atramental-taint in the centre-east of the Pantheon Isles, along the peninsula of Estralon. It grows rapidly, and by c. 2000 RM it has engulfed the settlement of Agonnur, leading to its abandonment.
- c. 2000 RM: the city of Xilia emerges on the peninsula of Bhalassia. It is a city of immigrants and refugees from the Crown Islands and other regions that had been devastated by Tethysian pirates. It comes to dominate the peninsula and grows into a small state, with many satellite settlements owing it fealty.#
- 2653 RM: Surutur makes a claim on the Pantheon Isles, which to this time are still fragmented, save for a few united regions, such as Xagadrra, which do little to protect their weak neighbours. A colony, named Besaphto, is established there, from where various coastal settlements and islands are taken with barely any opposition.
- c. 2655 - 2700 RM: the people of Limoth also begin expanding east into the westernmost isles of the archipelago, claiming them as their own.. Limothan settlers clashed with native islanders and Suruturi colonists over the next years, with the conflict escalating into war in 2655 RM, though neither nation was willing to make an open declaration of war. Suruturi forces gained the upper hand, beating the Limothan colonies, giving them enough time to fortify their own colonies and establish a deep harbour there, through which resources were traded back to the mainland.
- c. 2680 - 2710 RM: seeing the conflict to their west the people of Xagadrra put resources into defending their land and expanding into the fractured territories left behind by the Ghazharid Autocracy to deny them to Limoth and Surutur. An alliance is made with the state of Xilia in Bhalassia, bringing a modicum of stability to the region after a millennium of insecurity and weakness.
- 2781 RM: growing costs lead to Surutur abandoning its colonies to their own devices, and they are absorbed by the Limothan colonies.
- 2785 RM: bolstered by their growing territories, the Limothan colonies move east into the heart of the Pantheon Isles. Xagadrra and Xilia are quick to mount a defense and, more knowledgeable of the snaking waters and islands of the region, they successfully manage to fend off the first attacks.
- 2798 - 2806 RM: after years of uneasy silence a larger Limothan army marches overland against Xagadrra as a fleet of warships applies pressure to the south and east. This leads to years of war in which the defenders suffer setback after setback, The city of Xilia is razed in 2804 RM, and Xagadrra is defeated and occupied in 2806 RM, signifying the end of the war, which saw Limoth victorious and effectively in full control of the Pantheon Isles.
- 2806 - 2822 RM: Limoth consolidates its forces amongst its new territories, though the majority of the islands remained untouched by its troops. Many cities resisted their new leaders and conflict cominated the first years of subjugation, particularly in the Karaxhanes peninsula and its settlements.
- 2822 RM: revolt erupts in the city of Xagadrra. Hundreds of civilians are killed over weeks of conflict, but the governors of Xagadrra are slain alongside many of their guards. This brings about a month of vicious civil war in which fighting takes place within the governer’s palace, with victories measured by the number of rooms that were taken. The resistors, many of whom had once worked in the palace, eventually won, killing all of the occupying forces. They immediately begin fortifying the area against retaliation.
- 2822 - 2825 RM: word of their victory spreads across the Pantheon Isles and other cities follow suit. The victor of the resistance in Xagadrra, a charismatic woman by the name of Agubbra Escha, coordinates the unification of resistors across Karaxhanes and eventually farther afield, forcing the Limothi occupation to retreat west in late 2825 RM. She settles the last city to be won back - Yictaianda - and will go on to found the ruling Eschan Dynasty, which controls the Pantheon Isles to this day.
- 2825 - 2847 RM: Agubbra is a natural leader and commands the respect of those around her with ease, and she is quick to order the bolstering of the Pantheon Isles’ defences from her new base in Yictaianda. Coastal towers are erected on strategic areas around the Crown Islands as a means of defence against attack from the sea, far from the more populous and urban cities of the interior waterways. She orders the construction of expansive fortifications in the northern mainland, to deter a repeat overland attack in the future.
- 2831 RM: envoys are sent to Tethysia in the hopes of starting a new relationship. The envoys are accepted in the capital of Tethysia, Lysiteas, and an uneasy alliance is forged. Over the coming years trade between the two nations grows, with the Tethysian city of Ebrikas becoming a close trade partner of the Pantheon Isles, with the city of Daedarn.
- 2996 RM: the Mymerean Accord is struck between Haledonia, Kommea, Limoth, the Pantheon Isles, Tethysia, and Thetis, at the Behest of the Pantheon Isles, following decades of political maneuvering. The Accord sees the 6 member states form an alliance to patrol their coastal waters, ratifying a formal course of conduct with regards to slavery, piracy and smuggling, taking some of the brunt away from the Pantheon Isles, and sharing it between the members. This makes the waters off the eastern coast of Llachatul safer than they have ever been.
- 3084 - c. 3200 RM: silver is discovered in the island of Vhopra in the Bhalassian Archipelago during sulfur mining. In the years following this silver is discovered on more islands, and by c. 3200 RM the region became a major exporter of the material.
- c. 3500 RM: the Atramental region of the Estralon reaches its peak, encompassing some 26,000-square-miles. Its interior is characterised by ichorous vines and a pitch-like substance that oozes from the ground, all of which are inimical to mortal life.
- 3523 RM: Tethysia withdraws from the Mymerean Accords after decades of being used by the other member-states of the Accords to house prisoners. Tethysia has accepted hundreds of thousands of prisoners over a five-hundred year span. By the time it withdraws from the Accords, there are still thousands of prisoners-of-war living in the gaol-city of Azaketist. Without the support of Tethysia, the Pantheon Isles begin to suffer against pirate raids again, which disrupt vitalsea trade.
- c. 3600 RM: the last of the prisoners of Azaketist die, leaving behind their free descendants who go on to shape the city, which remains an influential coastal city in the arid region of Feratora to this day.
- 3632 RM: at the behest of a much-loved general and member of the Eschan Dynasty, marines are trained to accompany merchant vessels. Over the years these marines become well-trained and experiences in the art of naval warfare and boarding actions, and are today considered amongst the most adept marines in Elyden, selling their services across the world to private companies.
