Elyden Random Plots #5

A crusader, veteran of wars against the Old Forest, has travelled to north-eastern Bassorah, to a wooded region said to be occupied by twisted trees that are said to have grown from seeds brought from a distant tainted realm.

In the city of Karalla he seeks the advice of a scholar who tells him to avoid the woods, for their trees are sensitive to dark emotions, on which they thrive. The crusader ignores him and travels north, into the woods, though he encounters a travelling carnival before he reaches his destination.

At the periphery of the forest he encounters a nest of netcaster spiders, in which is hidden a bejewelled torque, thick with grime and dirt. He is wounded, but is far enough from the city that he considers entering the dangerous woods without resupplying...

KARALLA: large fortified city in N–W Bassorah, along the trade route N into Almagest (pop. c. 18,000).

thanks for the advice ;) though I prefer torque to torc - it has an older feel and is technically correct. You were right about advice though, and I changed it. I suspect the carnival does him more harm than good. Carnivals in Elyden tend to be agents of chaos, seeking to disrupt the status quo of governments and religions. In many cases they worship forbidden and forgotten gods to spite the established religions (Primarily the Church of the Machine, which is the only religion in the Korachani empire, and worships the only known 'living' Demiurge, who is interred in a distant cathedral-palace, which is the destination of an arduous pilgrimage called the Shadow March).

Intriguing. Does the travelling carnival give him some weird token or advice that will save his butt later? Or are they some kind of test of his resolve? (but also: advise → advice, torque → torc)
