BUBBLEGUN EXTRA: ALIEN EARTH FINALE & THE BALLAD OF WALLACE ISLAND

We also recently watched The Ballad Of Wallace Island, which was most excellent. While we were recording this episode, we couldn't remember which short film it was based on, but we can now confirm that it's called: The One and Only Herb McGwyer Plays Wallis Island. (from 2007).

2025-10-05 09:15:57 +0000 UTCSeeing too much of the Alien definitely jarred with the fear we're supposed to feel ourselves, and via the characters. And the fact that it's treated like a pet doesn't help. Is it the Grogu effect? I can overlook budgetary constraints as long as the writing and directing keeps me in the world. As a Buffy fan, it's obvious now (even then) how shoddy some of the costumes were, but you're so invested in the characters and story that it doesn't have a huge effect. Maybe a first time watcher now would feel otherwise. I'm not sure if the show would have worked better with more episodes - more time to care about the characters - or be shorter and have a smaller cast. Presumably they're writing with an eye for what comes next, rather than serving the immediate story. All I all I enjoyed it. It started strong, it has potential, but as others have said, some words don't need to be built and expanded. Alien and Aliens did all the world building I needed.
