EARLY ACCESS: BYAMPOD EPISODE 148

We're taking a breather from F.E.A.R. for a week, given all the heavy subject matter in recent episodes. It wasn't the plan, but this BYAMPOD became about the potential impact of AI on music. Brace yourselves for some VERY different versions of your favourite Marillion songs...

Comments

I must go dig up my draft FEAR blog post. I haven't listened to the full album since I wrote that post. Thanks to these AI songs I have started to create a (possible) triple concept album about my temporary teenage job picking potatoes. I used up all my credits making AI Motown and 50s ballad versions of Manics songs.

Carlos Nightman

Wasn't expecting that, that was brilliant. Loved the letters, repeat-o's, pure class, and YES 3 to byampod! 🤣

Katie Rootham

Cementing your position as the number 1 Marillion related podcast - even with the shambles of a letters section :-P ?I've been sat on the train this morning with tears of laughter running down my face. I *definitely* need to rip that goth No One Can and stick it on my playlist - i've always thought that lyric was a bit "deranged stalker/serial killer" but this version was basically the nail in the spangly goth-tinged coffin for me, and i'm there for it!

Pete Pyjamas

No, you're absolutely right to feel this way. It is disturbing and scary. I'm in exactly the same boat with my job. I'm just clinging on while I can, but it feels like scriptwriters are on borrowed time. Our daughter has just started a film degree course, and there's that part of us wondering if there'll be any jobs for her once she's out the other side. I honestly don't know what we do. I feel utterly powerless against it. The hope is that people will still want art created by humans, but... when it comes to big companies, how do we stop them going the quick and cheap route??

Paul Rose (Mr Biffo)

Hey Paul, Before I start this, just know that I am not in any way upset with you or Sanja. I know this episode was just a bit of fun! I am posting this here only because I feel comfortable doing so as opposed to on other social media platforms. This morning, I saw something online that multiple talent agencies are competing to sign AI "actors". How long will it be until the same thing happens in music? (if it isn't happening already). Seeing that post sent a chill down my spine. And as you've mentioned before, I doubt that most people would notice if who they were watching was a real person or not. I can't lie, I'm still too disturbed by how much AI "music" and "acting" is being normalized by society as a whole (not you specifically!!) to be able to enjoy this episode. As a classical musician, I am deeply frightened by how good AI has gotten in the blink of an eye. My minor in university is spanish translation, and due to the rise of AI translation (which has also gotten quite good!), I have pretty much given up on getting work in that field once I finish my degree next spring. To me, I see it as the two environments that I work and study in being under attack. Anyways, sorry for the little rant. I just needed to get some things off my chest. Much love, DH
