POD'S IN A NAME?

Morning. Just putting this here as I shared it on social media yesterday, but I’d already bombarded you with enough posts this week.

We recorded a pilot yesterday, which went well! So, that’ll probably become the first episode. Nice and easy and not forced. Just us doing our thing. We’ll bank a bunch so that we have at least a month ready to go. We’ll probably put it out the week after next.

The first ones will be audio only, but we do intend at some point to film at least some of them. We’re trying to make it easy to do, and remove all the usual barriers, so that it doesn’t become a big load of set-up each time we want to record. We will film some, but we don’t want to get too tied into always having to do that.

Now… the name. Some of you may be familiar with Bubblegun. It was a website I used to run with my friend Steve Horsley, and was intended to be a sort of non-gaming version of Digitiser. It was actually pretty successful, and we had some interest from investors, but… then the Dot Com Crash happened, and all that went away.

Ultimately, it became too time-consuming for too little reward and I had to step away. But I think the website is still up – Steve still keeps it going as an archive.

Aaaaanyway. The Podcast has nothing to do with the website - I just always liked the name. Never say never, but there won’t necessarily be audio re-enactments of Knife & Wife or Cartoon Man, or Top 10 lists.

This is really a podcast about nothing. No set agenda. We’ll have a kind of thread running throughout – just as Marillion is the thread in BYAMPOD – but it’s just there to give us things to talk about, and trigger tangents. Basically, we know what we’re like… and we want a format that’s loose enough that it has space develop in its own way, rather than locking us into something that becomes a straightjacket. We want the freedom to do anything, especially now that main channel YouTube Digi now has more of a format.

It just means we can throw in characters if we want, we can do stupid little plays, we can talk about literally anything, we can get serious if we want (though I think the intention is to try to avoid any of that)…

So, calling it something like “Strange But True!” or “But I Digress…” or “You Won’t Belieeeeeeve It!” or something awful like that doesn't really work. I always liked Digitiser as a name – and ultimately, it has become kind of meaningless. Bubblegun is meant to be something like that as well. And so it shall be going forward. We might break it up into seasons, or we might not. Let’s see. This is all an experiment. It'll evolve.

Of course... we did already get a comment accusing us of starting it because we want some of Cheapshow’s glory after they won an award this week. Because everything we ever do will be compared to CHeapshow forever becaussfuggingwkrlgfnfugfugfugsdflkwl!!!! It’s so endless and annoying. And the more it happens, the less likely is we’ll do stuff with them again in the future. Anyway.

We’re not aiming to win any awards, we’re not trying to become the biggest podcast in the world. There’s no ambition with Bubblegun other than to do something that’s enjoyable, and that some of you might enjoy inbetween our videos.

Anyway… you know… doing it also made me miss BYAMPOD. So. Let’s see what happens.
