They completely rewrote the villian I guess because you can't really do these effects, but it really watered things down for me honestly. A certified banger and how my Russian Revolution module started at uni ha! As for real life Rasputin, he was an absolute creep who had an inappropriate relationship, to say the least, with the young princesses. Prince Alexei had haemophilia and was a very sickly child, Rasputin was brought in as a religious man and medical worker. And he used the royal family's fear over Alexei to gain power and status. His death is the stuff of legends... he did die in the river. But before that he was poisoned by members of the aristocracy, unhappy with his place in court (and supposedly in the Tsarina's bed). Rasputin, however, had been microdosing himself with poison frequently to build up his tolerance, fearing he'd be murdered. So they then shot him multiple times and THEN threw him in the river. Sorry, essay over. But this period has always been an interest of mine 🤣

Specifically Mary Queen of Scots (who is related to the Tudor’s through her grandmother) because a vast majority of European royals and nobility are descendants of hers including the real Anastasia herself. And it was honestly this movie that kicked off my obsession with learning about European monarchies/royalty and I do have some fun facts that yall may or may not know: - Anastasia (and her siblings) were actually double related to Queen Elizabeth II through both her parents. Through Anastasia’s paternal side, the Dowager Grand Duchess (grandmama) and Queen E2’s great grandmother Queen Alexandra of The UK were sisters. And through Anastasia’s maternal side, her mother (Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna) was the daughter of King Edward VII’s (Queen E2’s great grandfather) sister Princess Alice of The UK. - Anastasia is also closely related to Prince Philip (Queen E2’s husband) through their mothers. Philip’s mother (Princess Alice of Battenberg/Greece and Denmark, named after her grandmother) is Anastasia’s first cousin due to their mothers being sisters as well. - Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna (Anastasia’s mother) was said to be the favorite grandchild of THE Queen Victoria (Edward VII and Princess Alice of The UK’s mother) and at one point Queen Victoria really wanted her to marry King George V (her literal first cousin/Queen E2’s grandfather) so that she would be Queen of The UK one day but she ended up falling in love with Tsar Nicholas II. - Through her ancestor Mary Queen of Scots, Anastasia is also related to BOTH Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette who sadly were seen as a horrible rulers but just like with the Romanov family, they were just very ignorant to what life was like outside of the palace walls thanks to those around them. - Anastasia’s father Tsar Nicholas II and King George V of The UK (Queen E2’s grandfather) could actually pass as twins thanks to their mothers being sisters lol I know it sounds a little confusing, especially with all that incest lmao but you know what they say about royals back then.. the only way to keep the royal blood royal is to keep it in the family.

He helped save her and to see that she actually survived and has become someone he comes to love awakes him from the dreary routine of being an emotionally closed off con man.
