EARLY ACCESS: BYAMPOD Ep 124

Well. Hmm. We weren't sure if we were going to put this one out. In the end, after reflecting on it all week, I've made some cuts. It might still end up being a controversial ep, even in this form, but we're taking the risk.

What started out intending to be an episode about Fish's one-off reunion with Marillion in 2007 turned into something a bit darker and more intense. We dig into the story behind the reunion and the inspiration for his 13th Star album. Unfortunately, there are certain subjects that simply can't be avoided...

A very interesting episode, I find myself echoing a lot of what you say Paul. Fish was a huge figure to me when I was a teenager but over the years all the tales of woe, hard luck stories and cunning plans that go nowhere all became predictable and tiring. Also the solo albums were patchy at best. But 13th Star was a big return to form with Steve Vantis taking great credit. I’m looking forward to next week’s podcast.

I totally get the awkwardness with the whole art/artist thing. Unfortunately, towards the end of his life, Meat Loaf said a lot of things on social media that weren't great. Outing himself as a bit of a Trump supporter, being anti-mask, making silly remarks about climate change being a hoax and just being quite aggressive in the face of genuine critique. It was massively offputting, and then the bugger went and died of Covid related illnesses and it was all a bit depressing given the way he had acted. It was hard at times to seperate the artist I loved, the man who had brought these fantastic songs to life, and was responsible for helping shape my music tastes to this day, against this man who was... a bit of a nutjob/twat. The music won out, especially in the face of what happened but it has left a bit of a black mark.
