BYAMPOD, DIGI, and CHEAPSHOW LIVE

Hello, all.

Hot innit? Well, it is if you're in England or Wales. We're in the middle of another heatwave, and I can't staaaaaaand it.

Just to say, I think we're going to skip a week of BYAMPOD. With the ongoing mum and dad stuff something needs to give somewhere along the line, and the end of Somewhere Else feels like a natural break. When we're back a week from Monday it'll hopefully be with the SE letters (I've yet to confirm a date with Pedanthony, but I'm sure he's reading this... so I'll drop you a line after the weekend, love). Hope that's okay with everyone.

Given that life continues to be this sort of frantic limbo, where we're just waiting for the phone to ring, while simultaneously running around for my mum, and making hospital visits, I'm kind of amazed we managed to get you anything at all this week. As it happened, it turned out to be a bit of a bumper week for Digi Patrons, with a new ep, two chunky bundles of outtakes for the upper tiers, and a Biffo's Brain session.

I get moments where working really helps to take my mind off things, and other periods where I just can't focus. If any of you have ever had a loved one suffer through a drawn-out, end-of-life, situation, I'm sure you can relate. It's very hard to plan too much, and our emotions are all over the place. We just have to do our best to put one foot in front of the other, and take each day as it comes.

I do, nevertheless, feel terrible for those of you who so kindly commissioned or approached me to work on art or whatnot. The timing with my dad couldn't have been worse, and I just want to say again how much I appreciate your patience and generosity. Thank you. It's all underway, just... slowly, for obvious reasons.

I'm still scheduled to be a part of Cheapshow Live this weekend. I know some of what they have planned (plus I edited the video sequences for them), and it's going to be a brilliant show. I thought I was just going to be making a small guest appearance at the end, but all us guests are going to be pretty much a part of the show throughout. Yes: I expect it will be very hot on stage, so that'll be nice.

Anyway. That's it for now. Everyone stay as cool as you can this weekend, and I'll hopefully see some of you at Cheapshow Live (despite the heat, train strikes, and nearby Coldplay concert).

Yes, no worries at all about the commission, etc., thanks! I hope that things will somehow get easier, and the overall situation will improve as much as possible. While of course you know this, it's so important to ensure your own needs are looked after as well, especially during these times. It's been great for us (and impressive!) that you have been able to deliver all that you have lately, but we all understand that things are tough for you right now. Have fun tomorrow and stay cool (yes, I "can't staaaaaaand" this weather, either!)!

No problem at all with the commissioned stuff, I would much rather you worked on it when it's enjoyable and keeping your mind off things than feel obligated to do anything. Hope that Cheapshow gives you a bit of a break, I'm looking forward to catching up with all the retro people!

I commiserate, good sir--particularly about how work is either a good distraction or nearly impossible to get done while you are grieving. My grandfather was my hero since I was old enough to form memories, and I lost him nearly 20 years ago right after I turned 18. He never got to see how I turned out, but he certainly heavily influenced it. I think we begin to grieve loved ones while they are still here with us. Seeing someone you’ve known a certain way your whole life, proudly independent, reduced to a diminished version of themselves as their own body betrays them… For me, that’s always been harder to deal with than the actual loss. As we prepared for my grandfather’s funeral service, I threw myself into a video editing project, strangely enough. I digitised (note the deliberate omission of the expected American "Z") all of his old VHS camcorder tapes, putting together a looping video from his and my grandmother’s 50th wedding anniversary party. I set this up to play in a side room at the funeral home. My grandfather was a natural born storyteller, so it was fitting that he managed to tell stories at his own wake. And working on that project helped me keep myself together when my world seemed impossibly broken. It seems in poor taste to bring up death as you and your family go through this difficult time, but I hope it provides a comfort knowing that this is a universal experience and we all care about and appreciate you and understand what it is to process all of this at once. I remain amazed at the stellar Digi-related output in spite of everything. I got a lot of genuine laughs out of Jurassic Golf! Have fun at Cheapshow 300! It’s a shame I’m stuck an ocean away and won’t be able to see it, but I look forward to the episode.

Heading from the coast to a city, going from 20 °C to 33 °C, seems very sensible. Though the train strikes do mean I've got a more air conditioned journey than I would have had!

It's just so draining. I'm sorry you went through it, Kathy. Wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Paul Rose (Mr Biffo)

I’m so sorry you’re going through this with your dad. We had similar with mine; I had indefinite unpaid leave from work so I could be with my mum, and the hospital had my mobile no in case they called while we were out. They phoned my mobile at 2am to say he’d died, and I had to go into the next room to tell my mum. Then she had to do the 2am drive to the hospital to see him because I had taken meds to help me get one decent night’s sleep. He was meant to be coming home the next day. Awful.

Kathy Holloway (Silph)

Oh superb, I'm there too, I'll try and find you to say hello :)

Taking the long way round to CS live, as I shall be picking Anatomical Bomb up on the way, so I'm glad that I've just had the car's AC fixed. Certainly looking forward to it. All the best to the family.

John Lindsay

I believe so.

Will cheap show live be filmed?

Simon Carlson

Take care of yourself, fella. Not one of us will be upset if you need more time off from Byampod/Digi/other stuff. Take care of yourself and your loved ones first and foremost. I hope the storm calms for you all soon x

Chai

See you at cheapshow live
