LET'S WATCH: Tick, Tick... BOOM!

Well, I think I just found my favorite musical y'all. Even with this being as hyped as it was from my friends and loved ones, I couldn't prepare myself for what I was about to watch. Heartbreaking, Moving, and Beautiful on so many levels... ugh. Should have called it Tick Tick... WEEP! Bravo to the entire cast and crew, and to the memory of Jonathan Larson. He would have loved Chappell Roan, I just know it. I've made this video available for purchase in the sop, so if anyone just wants to hold on to it without a month sub - that's available :)

LET'S WATCH: Tick, Tick... BOOM!

Comments

The diner scene was STACKED with Broadway legends! The two girls asking for mimosas are Angela and Eliza from Hamilton, Bernadette Pieters when you said who’s this!? The the guy who kept repeating his name is André De Shields from Hadestown! And so many many more

Jessica Leigh

Rent reaction when?!?!

Talia Adams

I’ve been too scared to watch this movie cause I knew it would make me cry. I hoped watching it with you would help soften the blow. It didn’t. I’m crying like a baby right alongside you.

Grace Elsie

that “life doesn’t end at 30” from Troy a minute before he finds out he died hit HARD

z

I feel like you would love to know that Andrew Garfield learned to sing FOR this movie 😭

Kai 💚🌿

ABSOLUTELY

Prem Parekh

uncanny valley girl

this was the most perfectly appropriate reaction to this movie. i’ve seen it multiple times and ugly sob every fucking time no matter what. your random quips in between your sobs killed me though LMFAO from the cgi birds, “tarot cards”, aortic aneurysm. ty for making me laugh between the unstoppable tears

maichi

I know lmao I was sad he looked down right when it showed Lin

Grumpy Boi

Troy not recognizing anyone in the Sunday Brunch scene made me scream lmao

Sydney Webb

Omg I never noticed Lin in it haha. I was hoping he’d react to Phillipa and Renee though 😭

Charlie

I LOVE THIS!! Lin Manuel Miranda is my favorite writer and seeing him honoring Jonathan is such an incredible thing. I've been a fan of musicals my whole life, I had my Rent obssessed phase and I get emotional every time I whatch tik tik boom. So so so glad you loved it just as much!!

Gabriella Bernardino

Mickie Marie

I cried so hard the first time I watched this movie, so I didn’t expect me to cry watching you react to it. But of course I did. It’s an amazing movie.

Trine Opdahl Pedersen

now it’s necessary that you react to RENT

Kayla

I hate you for crying and making me cry. I was doing so well! Great movie though! 😢😭

Shanie Howe

Dying that he didn't get the Sunday in the Park with George to Sunday Brunch reference but love that he still appreciated it

Courtni Fields

NOW YOU HAVE TO REACT TO RENT PLEASE

Kylie Cheslick

I LOVE this movie so much! One creative choice i particularly loved was the way the ending was executed. The ending of “Louder Than Words” leading to Roger and Karessa looking toward Jon, lights fading to a spotlight on him as he plays Happy Birthday for himself. And as he comes to the end, we pause before the final resolve, cutting to Michael telling Jon to make a wish. Jon contemplates his wish, holds his breath, and we cut to black as we finally get an extremely grand resolve. I like to think that it’s reflective of Jon’s legacy and impact. Jon was waiting for it. He didn’t get to see the impact of his work, but his work truly revolutionized modern theatre. His legacy was so much larger than anyone could’ve expected. It just took some time for it to come.

Zachary Rosales

I feel like you would really enjoy “In The Heights” and/or “The Last 5 Years”! Started watching the whole Let’s Watch… series with the HSM releases and loving it lol

Allie DeStefano

I need him to watch in the heights next

Yuan Reyes- Abreu

THIS

Alice Longhorn

YO THE WAY I FOUND OUT AT THE END HE HAS THE SAME BIRTHDAY AS ME

Maya Alliyah

"Was he talking about testosterone levels" oh you sweet summer child

Dippity_Dip

Obsessed that he recognized NOBODY in the diner scene not even the Schuyler sisters

Leanna🫶🏻

The fact that he missed the Lin cameo.... and then DOESNT KNOW ANY of the cameos in Sunday!!!!!

Ellie Skoda

As a theatre kid, I have no idea why I avoided this film. Safe to say, the way it has me fucked up right now (especially because RENT is one of my favorite musicals) is probably why

Jaylen Baxter

Wanted to watch this so much but the volume is so low I couldn’t hear it. 😭 Maybe try again later when I have headphones.

KH

you would love the phantom of the opera 25th anniversary pro-shot

Meredith G

OR SEE EILZA AND ANGELICA

Marwa

Its beautiful and tragic how Jon never got to see what Rent became, he died before his peak. He WAS the greatest musical writer of this generation.

Natalia de Moura Tramontina

Kinda upset he didnt freak out when seeing Lin Manuel or Eliza in the cafe musical number

Josh Beasley

i love this movie/musical so much, i hope you get to see the musical 'a new brain' someday

bia

"not my fave spidey" removing my membership imediately

bia

Not me weeping over a pizza rewatching this with you.

Lidia Dias

troy PLEASE watch the 5 last years !!

Ella Durrant

And Dry Cleaning was invented by Mr. Dry, lol

DEBRA Hayes

Also the song in the diner is a love letter to Broadway, chock full of Broadway legends!!

RebeccaNoel

The reason there’s a hard cut after the roof top scene before the ~sexy time~ is because there’s actually a cut song there called Green Green Dress they released later!!

RebeccaNoel

Here to add to the chorus of people asking for a RENT reaction (please), also based on this reaction I think you'd probably like La La Land?

Jay

YOU HAVEEEE TO WATCH RENT NOW.

erin m

for Jonathan's apartment they actually recreated everything from videos Jonathan took of his place for insurance purposes and Jonathan's sister Julie was apart of the movie process in many ways she even said watching Andrew portray Jonathan was like getting to spend time with him again

Kenleigh_ The_Nerd

❤️

Samara Franklin

Well damn. Sobbing now. Should have watched it sooner, but i watched it just now with you. I'm a mess. Would definitely recommend watching RENT

Jaime Card

Mia Fowler

YOU MISSED LIN MANUEL MIRANDA 1:03:47 TROY!!

Bhavana

Watching this for their first time with you Troy!

Kristy

It took me 2 weeks to finish watching this reaction because I have seen the movie before. I was traumatized, and I know watching you watch it was going to traumatize you as well.

Tia Hopkins

Fun fact! Lin saw TTB in college while he was working on In The Heights and has said it encouraged him to keep pursuing MT. So beautiful the tribute he pays to him through this movie

Kristin Grimaud

Please tell me you go to DragonCon because I would absolutely go to your panels if you did

Charlie Cranson

Super unrelated but it would be cool if you reacted to Bo Burnham’s INSIDE 🤞🤞🤞🤞

Sunny_urias

“Me when I pop that addy” LMAOOOO too real

Cory Harbour

pls do more musical movie reactions! you should watch la la land and hairspray

SydR

TROY YOU MISSED THE LIN MANUEL MIRANDA CAMEO AND THE CAMEO FROM THE GIRLS WHO PLAYED ELIZA AND ANGELICA IN HAMILTON!! (In the dinner scene!!!)

Cara Kent

YES PLS

koraa

I SECOND THIS !!

Emily Trimino

You need to look up how many musicals Sondheim has written cause… it’s not just West Side Story.

Casey Kendrick

PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WATCH IN THE HEIGHTS

Julia Hansell

Andrew Garfield’s mom passed away before he started to work on tick, tick, boom. Although he’s acting, there’s one scene where it’s not Jon Larson crying..it’s Andrew. The piano scene in the amphitheater 😭..yup

Nat

Andrew Garfield was snubbed for that Oscar, I will say that till i die

Jimmy Lu

In my mind, Andrew will always the the Academy Award winner for this performance 😭

Christina

omg you should watch the movie theatre camp

Jamie Damm

All throughout the diner scene and more there are cameos of famous broadway people ("Richard Caplan" was Andre de Shields, the scene with Steven Sondheim there were famous people in that audience) AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD TROY PLS YOU MISSED LINS CAMEO

Abby Parkhurst

The Schuyler Sisters cameo in the diner scene!!

Summer Slocum

Well .... Now you gotta watch rent, right? ;)

cami ☆

Oh my gosh you had me crying with you 😭 loved this vid

Samantha Cator

Okay so now you need to watch Rent and see the parallels between this and rent

Savannah Morgan

react to Madison Beer's debut album Life Support!

zineckz

Last one. You can also see clips of the Encores production of TTB that Lin was in with Leslie Odom Jr (Burr from Hamilton) as Michael and Karen Olivo (Vanessa from In The Heights) as Susan here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwJ7cu3r5-Y These are really stripped down productions that run for about a week. People are still on book, so you'll see them with music stands, but they also have minimal blocking and staging, props, etc.

Elissa Goetschius

I've never paid for anything from Patrion before, but this was too good to pass up. Thank you Troy for giving flowers to this movie, it deserved everything.

Anna

I think people have said this before, but I'm brand new to Patrion and haven't figured out the format yet. But the fact that Stephen Sondheim recorded the exact voicemail he sent the the IRL Johnathan, than passed away before this movie came is such a heartbreaking detail.

Anna

Also also. As the article mentions, several of the composers in the scene where he's sharing his songs with Sondheim are actually composers who received the Jonathan Larson grant. <3

Elissa Goetschius

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsHflVxyGKQ

Elissa Goetschius

Here's a link to the song he's paying homage to in the diner scene. From the original production with Mandy and Bernadette. (Bernadette, who you'll then realize is in the scene in Tick, Tick... Boom!)

Elissa Goetschius

my heart absolutely dropped for you when you didn’t even know he is dead 😭 such an incredible movie

Bailey Heinrich

the way you missed Lin's cameo oh my god

Bridie Fry

Please please check out Sondheim's 'Company'! I love the free version on YouTube with Neil Patrick Harris playing the lead. Highly recommend, won 2 Tonys I believe. Really beautiful musical <3

Bridie Fry

it's bad, but when you didn't even know Jon died the night before Rent premiered i burst out laughing. the moment of realisation on your face!!!

Bridie Fry

Aw bud knowing you didn’t know much about him before made me so sad for you to see the end 😭

Demi P.

This is fabulous. So glad you gave me a reason to rewatch this. There's so many easter eggs for theatre people in this one. Here's an article that helps point them out. https://www.buzzfeed.com/noradominick/tick-tick-boom-easter-eggs Also, I'm pretty sure they recorded the narration performance (the framing device for the film) at New York Theatre Workshop which would mean they filmed in the same room where Rent premiered. It certainly looks like the theatre there. Yes to watching the recording of Rent on Broadway. It has Renee Elise Goldsberry in it. (Angelica) I'd also recommend going back to some classics like Sunday in the Park with George with Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters. The diner scene is musically an homage to the title track. Fun fact with that one, Sondheim added the song "Finishing the Hat" (one of his most famous songs) during previews. The first night it was performed, Mandy did it with the lyrics on a piece of paper in his hand. Enjoy your theatre journey. And come to NYC and see some stuff! <3

Elissa Goetschius

This recording from B'way also has Renee (Angelica) as Mimi.

Elissa Goetschius

Everybody is literally vocalists in that scene! The Diner scene is full of Broadway legends! I’m surprised you didn’t notice two of the Schuyler sisters from Hamilton too! I would look into it it’s insane how many legends they fit in there!

Demi P.

Definitely watch the stage version of Rent (or the movie if you haven’t watched it) and In The Heights. I love your reactions. Particular with this movie, I am so happy to see you picked up on so much subtext! It’s my favorite thing to pick movies and tv shows apart for the subtle details in the unsaid text, so loved hearing it from you!

Daylet

You getting emotional from the jump is the only way to watch this like you aren’t crying every few minutes you aren’t watching tick tick boom lol 😭

Demi P.

You have to look into the work they put into this to make it accurate cause the details are insane!! Like the apartment alone is insane! The lean of his shelf and everything!

Demi P.

In The Heights next!

Demi P.

Yo I’m so excited for this!!!! One of my absolute favorite musicals! And such a touching real story

Demi P.

Came here to say this about the brunch diner scene!! Maybe Troy should check out more Sondheim musicals if he liked that number so much 👀🙏🏻

Dee Hollander

two musicals i’d love to watch with you: the last five years, and la la land, if you haven’t seen them of course!

Foggy

this is a recent fav movie of mine and it's so cool to see you watch this YAY this reaction is EVERYTHING <3

teej

“First on screen musical” you mean to tell me you’ve never seen Sound of Music Marry Poppins, Hairspray, Mamma Mia, La La Land??? The Greatest Showman? Wizard of Oz? Singing in the Rain?? Plz confirm… as I find it, especially as a film major, to have never seen any of the above. Disney Channel - HSM?? Camp Rock?? TIA for answering Edit: ok now having watched the full video, so glad you liked it! Suggestion- you should look up a YT video that breaks down all the people who are in the Sunday scene… there’s some names in there, and a couple of faces you’d recognize if they were wearing 1700’s dresses (hint: another musical you’ve seen). My vote for the next one: High School Musical 1-3, they are classics

Daniel Stergios

Loved everything about this 😍 one of my favorite musicals and your reaction was pure gold and made my heart so happy

Lexie B

As someone who has tick tick boom in their Letterboxd top four, this reaction was pure gold

Anjalika

This movie absolutely changed my life when I watched it for the first time a few years ago

Savanna Kite

Keep riding the Lin train. In the heights next for sure

Katelyn Miller

Not me answering your questions like you could hear me 😂 this was the crossover I didn’t know I needed it was everything tbh. Also if you think that Sunday brunch song in the diner was sad wait until you find out that it’s a spoof of Sunday from Sunday in the Park with George (written by Sondheim, who was Jonathan’s hero) as a love letter to him & his work and when he did it in the OG tick tick boom it was just at the piano so for the movie Lin (Jonathan is one of his heroes) did this scene as a love letter to him and gave him a dream choir made up of broadway legends, people who’s work were influenced by Jonathan’s writing, and OG cast members from RENT. It’s so much and I weep every time lmao.

lilythesilly

another amazing video troy, your tears had me in my tears. i need a rent reaction now for more tears.

iyanah

When I first watched this movie, it wrecked me. I was turning 29 the year it came out and I was very much having a crisis about it. I love musical theater (as Troy puts it "an equestrian"), so the musical theatre references were some of the first things I noticed. On my repeat watches, I noticed different things that hit me every time. Watching Troy watch for the first time, and having his musical knowledge lending to yet another layer of my love for this movie, I am wrecked all over again. I could write a dissertation on this movie and all of my favorite parts about it. Lin did an amazing job telling Jon's story. I am so thankful for him.

Danielle Boyle

This my official petition for you to watch high school musical now lol. You’re name is Troy after all

Angelica

I’d highly recommend the show Falsettos. It’s a little complex in terms of following the plot but the score is fantastic, I think you’d really enjoy it!!

Lee. E.

It’s great to be able to ugly cry with someone though!

Carol Miltersteiner

Thanks for sharing that!!!! And the other crazy thing: Sondheim himself died less then two weeks after the release of this movie

Carol Miltersteiner

I loved the fact that he was clueless about that and also about the fact that the song itself is a reference to Sunday in the park with george (which is another nod to Sondheim)

Carol Miltersteiner

okay you also need to watch the deleted scene of green, green dress. it's my favourite song and i wish it was in the movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lb8E-cZGwvU

Kellie

have I already seen this? yes. did i burst into tears and sob throughout the entire end of that? yes.

flowi

Get into Stephen Sondheim to understand those comparisons in the film! He's the GOAT of musical theatre, frankly one of the smartest people to work in this industry. The song "Sunday" in tick tick Boom was directly taken and reworked from "Sunday" in Sunday in the Park With George, a fantastic Sondheim musical. Highly recommend checking that out, plus Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd to get a grasp on some of the best works of musical theater.

Sawyer Beach

Idina Menzel, the orignial Elphaba, was one of the original main cast of Rent (Maureen). And Steven Sondheim is a legend in musical theater. «Sunday in the Park with George» the musical they where watching in this film, was his. He wrote the lyrics for West Side Story, he wrote Sweeny Todd, Into The Woods and Company. Not only is it his own voice leaving the voice recording in the movie, he died shortly after that. So that was his last «apperance». It’s like showing your student film and Spielberg says it has heart and potential. I can’t even imagine what that would have felt like. Also, like other people have mentioned, basically everyone in the Sunday scene is someone notable. The music is from Sunday in the Park with George (obviously with new lyrics) and Bernadette Peters (the woman he bows too, a broadway ledgend in her own rights) originated Dot, the female lead in Sunday in the Park. It’s such a rich inside scene filled with refrences.

Miriam

love this movie and love how it brings this feeling of hope that things might work besides of how we wanted its what makes a great movie, not to be me but you should definitely watch theather camp troy i swearrrr its so good, fun and funny every musical kid has to watch it

Dara

Pls pls pls watch The Last Five Years with Jeremy Jordan (😍🥵) and Anna Kendrick

Denyce Linn

I never knew how good it felt to be ugly crying with someone else watching a musical until I started watching your reactions. Thank you!!!!!!

Carol Miltersteiner

Just watched this for the first time with you and I'm also sobbing oh my god

Nat

Just want to let you know I'm watching this for the second time, I forgot how much I loved this movie but also your reaction is everything

Maria I Balda

Troy, i love this movie and your reactions so so much, however - in the diner sunday brunch number would you mind taking a closer look at the people in the scene? you'll find Lin Manuel in the kitchen, and the actors of Eliza and Angelica from hamilton in the ensemble singing. more than that you'll see so many familiar faces from broadway - legends and cast members from rent itself. it is a beautiful scene of Larson getting the recognition from his idols for his work even if he's not here to see it. if you're lost heres an article showing who's who. https://www.cbr.com/tick-tick-boom-every-broadway-cameo-in-sunday/

Lily

The diner scene always makes me bawl because he's sitting there with absolute legends from the business, not realizing any of it

Jessica Brunner

I was just going to rewatch your Hamilton video to listen to something in the background. Seeing this just made my day

Skye Edwards

Oh, I can imagine the HSM tracks slaps in Hindi! I watched in English, but came across the Norwegian versions from time to other, and that was weird :D And if Troy is in the right headspace to take in the glory that is High School Musical he absolutely should do it!

Sofie

I signed up on Patreon for the Hozier reacts and I’m staying for the musicals!!! Best investment of the month for me fr 😂

Carol Miltersteiner

This is the best thing I’ve seen in forever. I am loving the musical watches. Troy, have you not seen the stage version of rent that’s available on streaming?

Rayne Erwin

This is legit my like top five musical Im so so happy you watched it!!!

Emery

This is my absolute favorite musical and it makes me SO happy to see someone experience for the first time

Emily

I’m new as of today because of this reaction! I’m sure someone already said this, but I HAVE to touch on the Sondheim phone call. Bradley Whitford, by that point in the film hadn’t spoken in over an hour, and the original voicemail they recorded was pretty generic. Lin let Stephen have a private screening and Stephen reached out to him and said, basically, “can I rewrite the script for that call? I wouldn’t have said it like that, and if you can’t get Bradley, I’ll record it.” So, Lin (without hesitation 😂) said “You betcha!” And Stephen did exactly that! As far as Jonathan’s death, the producers and directors of RENT decided to not have the cast perform that night, but just do a table read (for lack of a better term. But as the reading went on, it was almost impossible for them to stay seated, so they slowly began to perform and the rest is history ❤️❤️

Jennifer Redmond

This was TEWW good. you gotta do more of these! I vote for Sweeney Todd or Dreamgirls next

Kiara Amira

echoing others but you should watch Rent! so many of these songs are the precursors to what became that show, really adds to the narrative/experience. i think you’d appreciate the ~layers~ 🌝

Rachel Heine

Now you have to watch Rent!! See the masterpiece he made

Toni Timmerman

I recommend in the heights another lin classic

Kieran

Lin also talks about how andrew did not know how to sing and fully did vocal lessons and learned to sing in only SIX MONTHS before doing tick tick boom

Zia

There's a youtube video about the behind the scenes that includes Jonathan Larson's family talking about the project, it's called Honoring a broadway legacy: behind the scenes of tick, tick... BOOM!

Zia

We need to fix that ASAP

Lauren O’Reilly

Thank you Troy, this made my day

Xibata

“Oh I didn’t know he was no longer with us” HONEY YOU ARE IN FOR A SHOCK

Gracyn

I just know this is going to crush me I haven’t seen it in so long

Gracyn

I was losing my mind like theyre right there!!!! when he turned away at lin’s scene I tear rolled down my face silently

szasglock

my patreon expired an hour before I was gonna watch this and I almost killed myself

szasglock

troy not recognizing all the actors from hamilton and other big theatre people throughout the whole movie was making me scream at my screen

aeryn

I was screaming at the screen that whole scene!!!!

Kathi ayala

You should watch Grease Live that Vanessa hudgens was in as Rizzo!! So good and v emotional since her dad died the night before

Ashlyn

Legendary and nostalgic. And I'm from India so we had translated version of the songs here in Hindi. So when I grew up and had internet access I encountered english versions for the first time and it was 🤯

shradha

Can't believe you have missed out on the basketball dance, Sharpay, and Troy frolicking on a golf course, but also don't know how it would be like to watch for the first time in your late 20's either :D It is no Tick, Tick, Boom for sure , but it do have some bangers, if one leans into the silliness of it.

Sofie

Yupppp

hammy

So looking forward to watching this with Troy, but in saying that he has never seen anything of Vanessa Hudgens, does that means that he have not seen High School Musical?!?!?!

Sofie

you NEED to watch la la land

MysteriousMsF

The need for Troy to watch Inside is visceral

Slern

it took me a few watches to figure out most of them, but i had to google to find André De Shields (Hadestown), Howard McGillin (Phantom of the Opera), Chuck Cooper (The Life), and Beth Malone (Fun Home) because I hadn’t seen any of those shows. I have seen Phantom, but I’m old so my Phantom is Michael Crawford 😉

bethannie

Really Wanted Him To React To Seeing Lin Manuel or Angelica & Eliza...

Hannah Miranda

TROY this made my day. This is literally my favorite movie maybe of all time. I just moved into a new apartment on my own. Its my first time living alone and its been pretty lonely. This felt like watching my favorite movie with a good buddy and was so nice <3 I am LOVING the musical reactions!!!!!

Kaela Shafer

LITERALLY WAS THINKING THE SAME THING!! he needs to watch the 2008 recording on youtube.

AF

Everyone in the diner scene is a broadway legend

Robyn Epstein

Troy please watch Rent ! The whole broadway musical is on youtube for free and there are so many refrences to Rent in Tick Tick Boom it truly is so great.... also you will absolutely weep

L

falsettos would be soooooo nice to see

chase

I feel like it’s not your usual thing but I think you’d love Bo Burnham’s Inside if you’ve already seen it I’d still love to see you react to it!

Kaitlin Thompson

Thank you for this reaction Troy! Since we’re on a musical kick I have a few recs: Falsettos!!!!! Legally blonde pro shot Into the woods pro shot West side story (2021) In the heights Sweeney Todd

Rileigh

Yes yes yes yes

Rileigh

you would LOVE in the heights!!! 🫡💕

Emily Dickey

The Lin JUMPSCARE at the end😭 after bawling my eyes out to see Lin just 👁️🫦👁️. Also the people singing Sunday were (old and new) broadway legends which makes it more impactful 🩷

Buckethatonacat

Him not recognizing a single person in the the Sunday sequence actually kind of hurt me

Emily Dickey

You need to watch the cut version of ‘green green dress’ i still don’t quite understand why it never made it into the film, but it adds so much chemistry to Andrew and Alexandra’s characters and it’s so so good, it was my most played song on Spotify year before last

Georgi Dodd

Just want to add some background lore but Lin had actually got the REAL stephen sondheim to record that voicemail on Jonathan’s phone. flash forward stephen sondheim actually passed away right before the movie came out. It’s this heartbreaking ode to his work (he made many many broadway shows). glad you loved it troy!!!! knew you would

Rachel Crawford

and a lil washington cameo in the audience :)

JustKay

Troy you need to react to falsettos

Kaysie

Even if not to react to, you should absolutely watch Sunday in the Park with George by Sondheim - referenced heavily in this show (the music for the Sunday brunch scene is an interpolation of a song from it) and the themes are so similar to Tick Tick Boom!

Emma P

My first time watching I noticed Bernadette Peters performing the Sunday song. After my millionth time watching this I realized the OG cast of Hamilton Phillipa and Renee! …but I’m so disappointed in myself. And I’m guessing the others are Broadway legends!

Katie Sigler

i haven`t watched to the end yet but if you didn't you have to look up the green green dress deleted scene its one of the best songs from the film.

hayley v

while i understand why, troy not getting all the broadway legend appearances hurt me a little cause it makes this all even more special

Kay

Dw Troy, I cried just as much as you did😔🤚🏼

Ida Rafn

can you please watch In the Heights!

Natalie Gonzalez

PLEASE WATCH RENT LIVE, I AM BEGGING. It is my favorite musical, plus now that you have Jon Larson knowledge, you can have a deeper appreciation for it, but DON'T watch the movie. It has to be the one filmed onstage (2008). It was meant to be a rock opera (like Hamilton), PLUS it has Renee Elise Goldsberry (Angelica Schuyler) as Mimi

Emily Lewis

i hope troy will listen to some of the other songs from the album on spotify because there is another version of "green green dress" with andrew garfield and alexandra shipp singing it and i love it so much

Emma Fitzpatrick

was hoping he'd notice lin in the kitchen + the schuyler sisters (philipa soo and renee elise goldsberry) but its okay!! anyways thanks for making me sob sir

Annelise

i feel like we have no choice but to watch Rent together now as well!

daisy_bey

YESSS

Sophie Callaghan

I've still never gotten through this without absolutely sobbing

Rae

I was hoping Troy would recognize Lin in the background of the diner scene and the actresses who played Angelica and Eliza in Hamilton and was slightly sad that he didn't

Cris Cabrera

literally!! i was like no go back plsss

Kennedy Elise

I just wanna say, I watched tick tick boom when it first came out on netflix, because I was a fan of Lin Manuel Miranda (still am) after watching hamilton. I thought the movie was good but somehow never really connected to it that much. But man, watching troy react to it and seeing it for the first time in a few years, it's so much better than I thought it was. It's a phenomenal movie, literally everything troy was talking about, the music, the themes, the cinematography, the emotions?? all so fantastic. I need to talk about this movie more often to people. it's SOO GOOD

Hannah Smith

loved this reaction! this would be the perfect segway into watching RENT... just saying

Riley

Freaking loved this🫶🫶

Isabel Hierck

Are we doing a Lin Manuel sweep? Because next would be In the Heights. Just saying 👀

Auburn

I rlly would loveeee u to react to benson boones album

kylie Mctaggart

There is a full recorded performance of heathers on prime that you should add to your list!

DaisieLore

So when are we also watching RENT? :D

Hannah

I don't if anyone has said this already but if not: the real-life person Michael is based on/inspired by is still alive. Or at least, he was when the movie first came out. He lived longer than that year he hoped for and that heals my heart a little

Jessica

He is MY favorite spidey ❤️💙

Katie Sigler

right! 🤣

Jordyn

would love a reaction to the movie Rocketman about Elton John! SO GOOD

Jordyn

it was so fun!! wish i could follow you on Letterboxd

meg

I am so happy I got to watch it with you for the first time! Thank you for being funny, not afraid to be emotional and just being an amazing human being! <3

vxferencakova

awesome reaction troy, that was super fun to watch

RegenJasper

someone tell him the diner scene is full of broadway stars

vivian

We definitely should watch Rent now!

Angela.

Listen tugging on the heart strings early this morning 😭

Chenise Brown

I LOVE this movie! Also, Andrew Garfield sang “Why” (the piano song at the amphitheatre) live on set and that’s what they used in the scene :)

Daisy Homer

Stephen Sondheim actually passed away a couple of weeks after the movie came out ❤️ made me sob so hard watching it a second time after his passing knowing that was his voice on the machine.

Erica S

Oh no another sad story 😢

DEBRA Hayes

omg Sweeney todd would be so cool

christine.ro

there’s a fabulous video on the netflix: behind the streams youtube channel i think you’d find really interesting. it’s called “honoring a broadway legacy: behind the scenes of tick, tick… BOOM!” i don’t think anyone would be upset if you decided to react to it here 😉

bethannie

what a beautiful reaction, thank you for sharing it with us 💜 many of the things i thought of commenting have already been said by others (like the normalcy of musical songs being very step-by-step descriptive in order to help further the plot along) but i did want to mention something else. Jon was confident, yes, but he wasn’t arrogant. from what his close friends have all said he was actually pretty insecure, uncertain, and full of anxiety. i feel like you may have read it as him being full of himself. he did say the “i’m the future of american musical theater” line to his friend Eddie, but it was in the context of him wanting to incorporate new ideas (like rock music and social commentary) into the standard musical formula of the time. he wanted to honor life, and he did that beautifully. and he wasn’t wrong. he really did change what american theater could be. also, without him, there would be no Lin-Manuel Miranda. Lin said that it was seeing Rent on broadway that made him think he could write a musical himself one day. “In the Heights” was his Rent 💜

bethannie

I understand how Jon might feel infuriating, and I'm not defending how oblivious he was w the people he loved, but I relate to his feelings of anxiety so much, not being able to do anything, to move, to talk until this great big thing happens that you're not even sure it's gonna happen and when and how, but it takes so much space It's impossible to see anything else.

Alejandra Porras

so glad to watch you react to this!! it's a good one for real. i love hearing your in-depth thoughts on the way scenes are shot or how music is played and what it represents. it makes me happy that you found a musical that emotionally resonates with you - mine is waitress, and the thing you said about the song in the diner made me laugh. (it was written by sara bareilles btw). anyways i saw someone else recommend falsettos and i would love to see you react to that one too! it's in my top three. prepare for tears if you do watch that one though.

Kiarra May

Thank you for this link omfg

Elle

I’ve watched this movie so many times, and i bawl EVERY time. I usually don’t like or watch musicals, but this is my favorite. Also I think this movie and Rent, the plot or the characters gender or their background is meant to be somewhat similar to each other. Loved the reaction though

mari johnston

cried with you to this one like wow

ciara wells

Also maybe Rocketman, just for the Elton John appreciation

Annie Salas

If we’re about to go into a movie musical route you should watch Dreamgirls and all I gotta say is that Beyoncé was one of the people who starred in it. Also watch Falsettos, it’s an amazing musical that sort of reminds me of Tick Tick Boom at times and the pro shot is easy to access.

Annie Salas

NOT UR FAVE SPIDEY?? shocked

Daya K

I'm sobbing, just straight up sobbing. Literally my cat and dog have come to check that I'm okay 😂 But god it's so upsetting that Larson never got to see Rent. That musical changed lives, and changed musical theatre. And he should have gotten to see that. Brilliant film. Brilliant reaction. Bravo.

Lauren Clarke

I really recommend you watch Rent! This movie hits so much harder when you've seen it. It's my favorite unconventional Christmas movie.

kenzie jo

I should not be balling my eyes out at 2:55 in the morning Troy

Brianda Mariee

it's so hard to describe how important sondheim was. when he died one eulogy i read called him a modern shakespeare and it was barely an exaggeration. if you wanna check out something by him, steven spielberg's 2021 west side story is amazing.

Lauryn Goates

I had so much fun watching this! The ending when the green screen came back on took me out, I felt bad laughing but Troy sobbing with that in the background had me dying. When the sun glasses came on I absolutely lost it

Monica

and the fact that the voice recording from that last scene was by the actual Stephen Sondheim saying his actual thoughts to Jon, it broke me on so many level every time I watch this film. It was some of his last words too since during the film's release month Stephen Sondheim also passes away.

Faith Mo

so actually there *is* a number when Susan reveals the green dress, and it’s called green green dress! it was a scene tragically cut from the movie but you can still find it online!! it’s 🔥🔥

Ally Holloway

My favorite thing about this video is Troy missing every single Hamilton cameo in the diner number including Lin's lol

kenzie jo

I knew it was going to be so emotional when you didn’t know he had passed at the beginning 😭😭 my dude is BEREFT

Elle

YES not enough people have seen that musical or the movie

Charlie

omg that’s so cool!!

Tori Jeri

Fun fact: that phone message was recorded by Stephen Sondheim himself. (Sondheim in the movie is just an actor tho) It was the last work he did before he died in real life. He died during the making of this film.

Ginna Rocha

what just hits harder is knowing that Johnathan was probably so proud and excited for the debut of Rent and what it could become and yet he never got to see how it changed musical theatre 😭

Julie Keim

I have “forget regret or life is yours to miss” tatted 🩷

Bri Scott

REAL

Bri Scott

an update after finishing the reaction: troyyyyyy 🫶🏼 I love love how much this musical resonated with you especially not knowing anything about Jonathan Larson before. ((I promise I’m not bullying you, but you really should look up some bts/background of the “Sunday” number, it’s just so very cool and an incredible homage to all of theatre and to Sondheim who ended up passing away two weeks after this movie was released 🤍))

Ally Holloway

Troy go back to the diner scene! Lots of Broadway cameos (specifically Lin, and the women that play Angelica and Eliza in Hamilton)! That little pose they did was a nod to that as well as their outfits with the pink and blue. But what’s also cool is that this song is a spoof on the song from the Sunday In The Park With Georgie musical they were watching!

Jenna

Not you calling Sondheim “sodomizer” 😭😭😭😭😭😭

Liv Heskett

time for linnys musical!!! In The Heights

Makenna Garcia

omg Cam??? Hi!!! love your videos!

Tori Jeri

this is one of my favorite reactions you've ever done! please do more musicals 💛 this was delightful

Jenny Kelson

the proshot! it’s so much better than the film

Tori Jeri

In the Heights is AMAZING!! definitely an underrated gem!

Tori Jeri

this isn’t just my favorite musical it’s my favorite FILM of all time. RENT has been a favorite of mine and is the reason i fell in love with musicals and there are SO many references to it in this like “pookie” and the voicemail box. GOOD NEWS: the real “michael” is named matt and he’s still alive today!! Lin-Manuel truly was the only person i think could’ve made this movie. I think he understands Jonathan Larson & his works more than anyone and he had help from Jon’s sister/family. i’m sure everyone in the comments has already pointed out all the cameos in the Sunday number, so i’ll spare you but yes this is just the best film i’ve ever seen. I am biased but it truly is my favorite movie of all time. RENT hit me at a time where I couldn’t see a good future and hearing “No day but today” really changed my life. I even got it tattood! I want to get “cages or wings” as a tattoo but i need the money first lol.

Tori Jeri

it's midnight, im sobbing, and i have work tomorrow..

Layluh

https://youtu.be/fr99DVmFt2c?si=mFrgrrb7TEXfWwT0 chills every time

Megan Oetting

idc tbh the production is good and the music works, which is more than i can say for every movie musical lol

kachow6969

That musical on the tv looks weird because it’s Sunday in the Park with George which was inspired by the painting A Sunday Afternoon (not typing the rest lol). Highly recommend watching the broadway stars tribute to Sondheim after he died where they were all singing Sunday together 🥲

Megan Oetting

fun fact: the voice mail for steven sondheim at the end of the movie is the voice of the real sondheim!! making this movie his final production before his passing :(

thattylergirl

I'm begging for In The Heights movie next. I read that the performance Andrew gave in the park singing the Michael song was recorded like a week after his mother sadly died.

Derlis Aguilera

It will forever make me violently SICK that Andrew Garfield did not win that Oscar.

Cameron

Yes!!! And Michelle and Gay being Jonathan’s real life neighbors 😭

Angela McAleese

Pls no to the Disney version of into the woods. It strips all nuance from the actual show. If he watches it he should watch the proshot from Broadway.

Liv Heskett

i think the next musical you should do is come from away. it is sooo good with such a touching story and an amazing soundtrack

Gabby Mancuso

This is my favorite genre of Troy videos. Discovering theater 🥰

Jenna

This was my second time watching this movie, and I sobbed just as much as the first time. I needed a good cry though so thank you for the content :)

Brianna Washington

Sondheim is a musical theater God. Wrote into the woods, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the park with George, company, many more. Also he did the lyrics to west side story. I recommend watching Sunday in the park since it’s basically a weird parallel of Jonathan’s life. Stars Mandy Patinkin, who was in Inego Montoya in princess bride

Liv Heskett

YESSSS

Brigid

So many cameos and Easter eggs hidden in here. Some of my favorites: Sondheim actually recorded the voicemail for this movie based on what he recalled saying for real. This was right before he died. Jonathan’s real life sister makes a cameo in the audience in the last scene finally getting to see her brother’s work be appreciated and loved. Ugh this movie is everything. I’m so happy you loved it.

Rebecca Gumpel

I’m so so happy about this and also been patiently waiting for Troy to recognize that those are the literal schuyler sisters sitting at the booth in Sunday and LIN IN THE BACK AND LITERALLY THAT THE WHOLE DINER IS BROADWAY LEGENDS AND THE SONG IS A VERSION OF SUNDAY FROM SITPWG AND LIKE BERNADETTE HELLO I’m not mad, just forgetting that not everyone in the world is a thespian (ahem, sorry, an equestrian**) much much love troy

Ally Holloway

Troy you NEED to watch rent now!!

Kiki

Not the Lin jumpscare at the end 😭😭

Amanpreet

highly highly highly recommend in the heights, west side story (og or 2021), moulin rouge, and rocketman!

a

In the Sunday scene. Not Troy missing Eliza and Angelica fully 😂😂 he’s so into it I love it

Martha

imma need you to watch phantom of the opera or sweeney todd plssss

holly 🥀

please please PLEASE watch rent!! there's the 2005 movie or the 2008 pro shot from broadway shot just like hamilton, which you can find on youtube for FREE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhG3JTchKDA i suggest the broadway proshot just bc i think rent was meant to be watched live but the movie is great too honestly other movie musicals i think you would LOVE: into the woods 2014 and the last five years 2014

kachow6969

Oh god yess! I was screaming at my screen.. I love Troy but i got so annoyed he didn't catch any Hamilton cameos in Sunday Brunch! 😅😒

shradha

(troy please superbia is a satire musical, its supposed to sound nonsensical😭😭)

Ash

I feel like a great stepping stone from this for you is in the heights

Kylee Compton

Not you looking down for the few moments that Lin himself was on the screen

Tali

YOU NEED TO WATCH THE DELETED SCENE!! Green Green Dress when they were on the balcony!!

Chloe

“he wants to blow up immediately” no he doesn’t. he worked on a musical for 8 years and then was told “can’t wait to see what you do next”. that’s pretty fucking heartbreaking. i think you misunderstood a lot of jonathan’s character/motivations. also, that song from john’s musical suberbia is very good in my opinion. in musicals, the songs often will spell out exactly what is happening/ the setting of the story because you are using your imagination and the music to explain the plot and setting. it’s not like a movie where you can use cgi. maybe in regular songwriter you shouldn’t spell the story out but in musicals you absolutely have to. take “one short day” from wicked or “alexander hamilton” from hamilton as examples. the point of suberbia being included in the movie wasn’t that “this show sucks and he’s a self absorbed asshole for spending 8 years on it” it’s “this unbelievably talented guy just spent 8 years writing this musical but it’s not gonna get picked up by anyone because it not mainstream enough/ it’s too weird”. it’s not about robots or aliens, it’s a criticism of how the future generations will use technology and it’s pretty ahead of it’s time in my opinion. <- so sorry for this paragraph lol

Abigail Collins

So you have to watch the stage version of rent now it has to happen (the film version sucks lol)

Abby Archambault

I copied a link that has them all. There are too many to write in a comment 😂

Liv Heskett

I can’t believe he never clocked Angelica and Eliza in the Sunday seen lol.

Falisha Lea

Loved the reaction, I cried right with you. Pleaseeeee watch In The Heights, it is a Lin musical and came out in theaters but went under the radar because of the post Covid movie theater attendance lack

stephanie alvarez

Well now you might as well watch Rent 🤪

Mads

sunday in the park with george next pleek🙏

Eli

I hope someone has commented all the Broadway greats with cameos! Especially in the Sunday brunch number!

Carrie Willoughby

I was waiting for Troy to people the Hamilton cameos at the diner… I missed them my first watch through

Shontae Jackson Dunston

there’s a deleted scene for the song “green green dress” that was supposed to take place on the rooftop with susan and jonathan, imo it’s one of the best songs from the musical! https://youtu.be/lb8E-cZGwvU?si=YjpYvRYiWZNbb9tq

a

There are soooooo many references and cameos in this movie you didn’t catch because you haven’t seen enough theater. Here is a link to a video pointing them all out :) https://youtu.be/MBxF24s4WrA?si=pew-osnIqkU3G0De

Liv Heskett

The way Troy missed the Hamilton cast and Lin cameos but noticed that Jonathan was wearing the pink hat from the music video on stage lol

Talia G.

he actually mentioned in another stream that hsm is a contender!

Kayla Deyo

fun fact, stephen sondheim got to give notes to lin for this movie and that was actually him leaving the voicemail. he died right before the movie premiered in 2021z

Caroline

omg omg my fav is watching my fav movie

Ginna Rocha

This was a freaking rollercoaster.

Kel Merced

Just wanted to say that everyone singing in the song Sunday are famous broadway actors. There are 2 schylur sisters in there.

Zoe Lundy

Since you loved Vanessa Hudgens so much does this mean HSM is next in the movie musical lineup 🙏🏻

Meg

LET'S FREAKING GOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

Melody Esteban

I love this 💕 1. I need you to watch Stephen Sondhimes Sunday from the Sunday in the park with Gorge and 2. You need to watch Lin Manuel’s Vanity Fair interview for this movie your missing so many references 😂💗

Lenore Shields

Love the musical reactions!

Erika 🤍

Not Troy missing Eliza and Angelica in the diner scene 😭 and Lin working in the kitchen 😭😭 you have to google the full list of cameos in that scene my dude between all of them they have like 20 Tonys

Meg

Sunday is so important to the Broadway community! In the scene all the costumers are Broadway greats’ and the “bums” are from the original cast of “Rent”!! Goosebumps every time!!!

Alli Vaughn

Yes!!!! It’s INSANE. So much talent in one room absolutely gagged every time

Mads

OMG WAIT REALLY?!?

hammy

Troy the obnoxious girlies at the diner during Sunday brunch asking for baileys/vodka are the same actors as Eliza and Angelica from Hamilton!!! 🥰 that whole scene is broadway royalty basically even including actors from rent!!

Mads

Omg YES!!

Laci Gold

AHH omg dying at the Sunday Brunch song, seeing all the broadway folks is so cool

Amanda Ripley

Nope! Next one?

hammy

What's so cool about the "Sunday" scene is that it literally is an homage to Stephen Sondheim who inspired Larsons storytelling. Additionally, ALL of the actors in that scene are incredible Broadway stars (vets, newbies), many of whom starred in some of Sondheims greatest musicals.

Jesus Solis

Keep the musicals coming!!!!!!

Breanna Davis

i’ll forever be upset that andrew didn’t win the oscar for this

Bethany

I love these musical reactions!! Thank you for doing them 😄

Auburn

This was fantastic. I'm glad you go to see this masterpiece finally. I'm also glad someone else cried a bit more than I did when watching it.

Steve Noggle

Also also also you need you look up how Andrew got this job 😂 he talked about it on Jimmy Fallon

Kersten Davis

Welcome to the world of Joshua Henry

Kylee Compton

if you love lmm you gotta watch in the heights omg

Elizabeth Bauer

Troy you have to watch Rent! It will hit so much harder having watched this first. So many of his experiences he wrote into that story. Jonathan Larson was a genius.

Ashley O'Bryan

OMFG!!!!! THIS IS THE BEST EVER - thank u as always troy for saving my Wednesday here in Manila <3

Samie19

its one of imo the best musicals and best movie ever

Laci Gold

fun fact: andrew garfield literally learned to sing for this movie. he couldn't sing, but he really wanted the part, so he learned

Catherine Mackay

Oh I cannot WAIT for this! Literally one of my favorite movies of all time and didn’t get the love and adoration it deserved. Andrew Garfield is the love of my life truly.

Rebecca Gumpel

I would love for you to react to West Side Story (2021)!
