2020 CAN NOW SERIOUSLY GET LOST

As jubilant as we were over the US election on Saturday, we also received the awful news, that a family friend had died in a fire on Friday night.

You've probably heard me talk a lot about the time I spent up in Scotland as a kid. The short version of it is that my mum became best friends with my best friend's mum. Then one day, my best friend's dad announced to his family that, upon a visit to a small town called Golspie up in the Highlands, he'd bought a fish and chip shop, and the whole family was moving.

Consequently, this meant that pretty much all my school holidays were spent up there. First at the chip shop, and afterwards when they sold the business, and bought the house opposite . I loved it up there. Still do. There was an amazing freedom that was far removed from my suburban existence. Many of my favourite, most formative, memories were built in Scotland.

Though I haven't visited the town in some years, we've stayed in touch. The family now tends to come down here now more than we'll go up there. In fact, I saw the mum, Gloria, just a couple of weeks ago, when she was down to visit, and had been planning a long overdue drink with my old mate. On my last trip up to Golspie, his dad - Roger - showed me how he was making his own diesel from leftover oil he got from the chip shop. Sadly, it was his small back garden diesel production plant that lead to the fire which killed him. Police inquiries are ongoing, but the fact it happened around fireworks night leads to a certain conclusion.

I honestly couldn't think of many worse ways to go, and we're all in shock. As sad as it would've been if he'd had a heart attack or similar, it's the horror of it that we're left with.  Though I can't say I was ever as close to Roger as I was the rest of his family - I mostly seemed to get in trouble with him, little shit that I was (indeed, he called me a "little shit" last time I saw him!) - he was still an enormous part of my life, one way or another. Golspie was always an escape, a place where nothing bad ever happened. Now it'll always be associated with an unimaginable tragedy.

Over the past couple of years, there have been a few too many losses in my life, and 2020 just keeps on giving.

So, this is just to say... I've not done quite the full-on editing job on this week's ep of Digi as I normally would, and I might be a bit slow getting the next one out. The news seems to have hit me harder this morning than it did at the weekend, when I was mostly just reeling, so I'm feeling a bit heavy. Please bear with me for a bit.

This is so sad. Lots of love, Biffo. Make sure you take all the time you need.

lizithekiwi

My condolences to you and yours. My odd little lord of the rings based reference re: intruder cat on twitter now seems horribly tasteless. I apologise. Take care.

Dave Graves

Sorry Biffo. Of course you need to take time to come to terms with it all. Digi can wait until you're ready.

Kelvin Green

My condolences. That's awful news. Take some time and deal with everything. This year has been a mess for everyone in some way. We all need to take our time now more than ever.

Jason Salisbury

Sorry to hear that Paul. Thoughts go out to you, and their family.

WhatHoSnorkers

Very sorry to hear this. I know I would be a mess for weeks. Take your time with the channel, and let yourself heal.

Shannon Niel

Oh goodness that's horrible. What an awful way to go. Take whatever time you need.

Hedders

That's horrible news! Look after yourself and get yourself right before even thinking of others :(

Colin Jones

Bloody hell Paul what utterly sad news :( I am sure I speak for loads when I say sod the vidoes and just have some time to yourself to help get over this really emotional time - we will all still be here when you come back. I know how bad things can be as just the other week I had a funeral, my dad suddenly taken into hospital with suspected Covid which (fortunately) was actually pneumonia (he is now out of hospital and doing much, much better), leaks in the kitchen and bathroom and then the washing machine decided to piss itself all over the kitchen floor...and all this by the Thursday of that week alone. 2020- what a total and complete fucker.

Tyronne Mann

Sorry to hear that, mate. 2020 really can chew on a big, stinky bum. XX

pixelguff

This is absolutely awful. I’m so sorry.

Kathy Holloway (Silph)

Very sorry for your loss :(

kev2

So sorry for your loss, sending love to you & your family. Take all the time you need & look after yourself. We're always here if you need to vent xx

WonkyBearhead

Terrible news to hear Paul. Do whatever you need to do to look after yourself and take whatever time you need to grieve.

Treacle Truffle

This is desperately sad news Paul, so sorry for your loss. Do whatever you have to in order to look after your mental health, nobody’s going to be beating down your door for more videos when something like this has happened. Take some time if you need to. Hope you’re feeling much better soon. And yeah, 2020 can absolutely do one.

Chris Bell

Awful news, my thoughts are with you x

Spiff

So sorry for your loss. :(

James Moorehead

Absolutely. Take the time to take care of yourself.

Thomas Thacker

Jeez, I'm so sorry buddy 😞. I have been to that chippy a fair few times when we holidayed in and around Brora. That sounds horrible. Big hugs.

Kevin Clarkson

Shit, sorry to hear this Paul :( 💜

John Veness

So sorry to here this news I know it is hurting you as I just lost my dad who was my best friend and my rock
