Digitiser... the TV series?!

Hello all! Happy new year. How was yours? Did you have a good one? My was nice, despite coming down with a cold and a cough on Christmas Eve, and my eldest daughter having real bad ear ache.

I'm back at work now, inevitably, which fills me with as little enthusiasm as it does you, no doubt. I took the Christmas period to have a think about what I wanted to do as my next crowd-funded thing. I really would love to do more Trojan Arse Protocol, but I'm not sure there's sufficient interest there, if I'm honest. I don't want to risk launching a Kickstarter which doesn't meet its goals, even if it's something I really, really want to do.

Oddly, I was approached twice in the same day, just before Christmas, about writing a book. Firstly, by a publisher, and then by a certain big-name 90s games journo, who suggested we collaborate. It's weird, but even with a book being a fleshed-out compilation of the Games of my Years articles, I can't quite work up the enthusiasm for it. I think it's partly because what I do all day already is write and write and write. Found Footage was a release from that.

However... as some of you might've seen on Twitter... I've had an idea. I had a sneaking feeling that this week's run of classic Digitiser - which has gone down terribly well - might trigger something for me, and I think it has: what about a Digitiser web-series?

It's the first idea I've had which I think gets me excited, and would potentially get enough of you lot excited too. Plus, with this being the 25th anniversary of Digi, the timing couldn't be better. This idea is only half-formed right now, but I'm thinking a 15 minute-ish gaming show - probably leaning more towards retro-gaming than modern stuff (but wouldn't rule that out) - with reviews and features, but interspersed with Digi characters and madness.

Plus, I could use all that I learned on Found Footage, so I get that itch scratched. In doing the classic pages this week, I think I've finally realised that the thing which makes Digi Digi is the brevity. So, I'd want it to be very fast-paced, never lingering on any one thing too long.

There are lots of questions to be answered before I'm ready to launch a new crowd-funding campaign. How to render the characters on screen is obviously crucial - I have never quite gotten over my Knife & Wife pilot for Channel 4. And then there's the issue of whether I - or any of the Digitiser team - would actually be in it. But I've a vague idea about how to handle that too. I think it could be great. Frankly, having floundered a bit in the wake of Found Footage as to what I do next - I wrote a pilot script for an audio drama  (which I may yet return to), and toyed with a few other ideas - it's a relief to have, potentially, hit upon something which gets me fired up.

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I think that this could work well, especially with the added experience you have from producing Found Footage. The series could also be done in a few different formats so I think it is an excellent idea.

Yes. Perhaps with in-vision continuity as a hook for the chaos: Biffovision in the broom cupboard.

David Walford

Would like very much. Would like to help. Would like to do things. Etc.

Nicola

Just do it ✓

I like old games and funny stuff. This idea is great, count me in.

That, sounds like a great idea mate. Happy to offer money or time if needed.

I'm excited (and it's great that you're excited) about this idea, although very curious about how it might be made and presented, as that will be very important. I'd be quite happy to hear you, or see you, doing reviews and features yourself. I imagine animation for the character stuff in between, maybe Puckles the Cuckold style? Anyway, I'm in, and am happy for you to develop it however you wish, so let's not try to design it by committee!

Blimey. Nobody can just say something nice anymore!! But no. We wouldn't do it like that. That was just fannying around. I want to try and find a way to be faithful to Digi.

Happy Cockney-eww Year Biffo. Indeed, I think this sort of thing would appeal to me more as a Kickstarterer and/or viewer than Found Footage ever did. That said, if you're bring Digi characters to screen the way the Mr. T's Problem Page video was done a while back probably wasn't the best way unfortunately.

Doo eet noaw!

Gareth Noyce

Yes. Good.
