Game Jam Results

As you all know, I hosted a game jam over at AOTK, the theme of which was "paperwork". We had 5 submissions, all with wonderfully unique premises and excellent executions. I am now tasked with the difficult job of selecting one of them to be the winner of the jam, but first, let's take a look at the submissions.

Tempestas: Civilization's Shackles - aka

Original Game Thread

Tempestas: Civilization's Shackles was our first submission. It is a text-based choose your own adventure game built by aka in Twine. The game features the titular character Tempestas doing battle with a nefarious supervillain known as Paperwork. The battle plays out as a series of narrative choices for the player to select at their will, with each resulting in either a success or a failure for Tempestas and her mild-mannered alter-ego Bernice Chastain.

The writing in this one was superb and the scenes in it were quite entertaining. I enjoyed very much how the choices told me very little about their outcome, and thus I was surprised by whatever it turned out to be. If you have 20 minutes and don't mind reading, I recommend this one.

Paperwork From Hell - Ziacer

Original Game Thread

This game came as a bit of a surprise! Ziacer is a newcomer to the AOTK forum and mainly frequents the Video Games category.

Paperwork From Hell was built with RPG Maker MV, but it goes about its gameplay in a non-traditional way. Much of the game is self-referential, and some of the concepts, like the endless hallway were quite funny. If you're interested in playing this one, get ready to wait! Ziacer's interpretation of hell is not fire and brimstone, but bureaucracy and tedium, exemplifying one aspect of paperwork that we all know and hate. If you like RPG Maker games that break the fourth wall and tell a funny story, this one's for you.

The Archivist's Apprentice - t_rugen

Original Game Thread

t-rugen, of Brat Of The Wild fame, took the jam as an opportunity to tell a story in his characteristic way, and as a result, took the Audience Choice vote by a fairly large margin.

As with Brat Of The Wild, The Archivist's Apprentice was made in RPG Maker MV, making it our second submission made in the engine. The story tells of a young apprentice named Bekka who mistakenly misplaces a document and is tasked with travelling to the town where it originated and recreating it with the Lorespeaker there. The story has multiple paths and several endings, all of which are entertaining. The game also has custom sprites for certain scenes which is always a fun plus.

Papers Pleas - masamune

Original Game Thread

masamune's work on Papers Pleas is commendable. The game plays very similarly to the game Papers Please by Lucas Pope, but with spanking! It was created in Unity, which of all of the engines used is one of the more complicated, but masamune managed to make it work.

The game consists of reading a miscreant's misdemeanors and the assigning a punishment appropriate for it. The game loop is rather minimal right now, but masamune has expressed an interest in continuing to work on it, which is a boon to all of us! I highly recommend trying this one out if you have a few minutes free.

Discipline Delivered - Bagool

Original Game Thread

Bagool's Patreon

Bagool returns with a fun little rhythm game about spanking! As with their recent efforts, Bagool has built this game in Construct 2, a game engine for creating browser based games.

In Discipline Delivered, the player is tasked with tapping the correct direction according to a series of falling hands. There are two potential spankees and two difficulties per spankee along with a system that grades your performance at the end. The idea of using spanking as a base for a rhythm game is quite cool, and I hope to see more of this game in the future!

The Verdict

And now that we have taken a look at all of the games that were submitted, it comes down to me to choose a winner. After much deliberation and time, I have come to a conclusion...

They all win!

Each one of these games had real effort put into it and showed off their respective creators unique style and dedication. I applaud all of the entries for their hard work and their enrichment of the games community over at AOTK. I sincerely hope to see more of these creators in the future, and look forward to whatever new things they decide to work on!

Comments

I was referring more the the custom OTK sprites for the ending. I went ahead and corrected the post to reflect that. Quality work t_rugen.

Godspeak

Thanks! But there actually aren't any custom animations in my game, it's all stock RPG Maker MV apart from the spanking sounds (which I had already), and the necessary sprite edits for spanking. The only really custom thing was the music.
