I think the main argument in favor of PHEV is psychological. It's a "bridge" for folks who see the advantages of EVs, but aren't yet ready to give up (mostly perceived) range advantages and fueling speeds. For them, an PHEV is the best of both worlds...you get the EV thing around down, and roadtrip like a Boss. And, that's mostly true for the first owner of the car. for the second or third owner, you get to maintain two drivetrains, and increase wear on both, for little real advantage. I think Toyota understands this completely, and it's why their entire range is hybrid for now...and will move to PHEV and BEV as they see the consumer move in that direction.

Well said. I think they were cool and useful before charging infrastructure was there. But it’s here now. Thanks for the input!

Good case made. I never understood why anyone would buy one. Perverse European tax incentives are the only good reason. I heard recently that Euro automakers were lobbying to require SW that ensures users use EV mode or somehow required charging to qualify for incentives. Even the automakers know it's a scam.
