It is lengthy, but I will add like you said no where near a time sink like Umineko.

Damn, I think I somehow forgot most of the latter half of fate/zero but these two episodes was such a ride.. I clearly needed a rewatch because this is some good shit.
Archibald had his pride as a mage and the pressure of many generations resting on his shoulders, and yet he gave it all up for Sola-Ui but still got brutally murdered along with her. Won't say it redeemed him quite, but honestly I cannot fault him for giving Lancer a mouthful, since he trusted Lancer to protect his fiancé, who he demonstrated that he cared quite deeply for (despite the fact she basically tortured him to give her his command seals).
It's a moment where Kiritsugu seems almost irredeemable and yet he was immediately able to make seem almost as if Saber is the one who is in the wrong for glorifying wars in the first place, and for pretending that there is honor to be found on the battlefield.
Regarding the fate series and games etc, non-spoiler version. There is the main game: Fate/Stay Night, which is considered the main story of the franchise. It is basically the original (and it received two anime adaptations, neither of which is complete).
Then there is a sort of sequel, a bunch of spin-offs and of course Fate/zero which acts as a prequel.
Whenever people have suggested you to read the VN they have certainly been referring to F/SN, which is also one of the highest rated VNs on stuff like VNDB. It is just the one game, though people have really high regards to the sequel as well.
I can definitely subscribe to the idea of seeing you go through it, especially now.. but it is a lengthy boi - not as long as Umineko I don't think, but it's up there for sure.
