[EARLY ACCESS] Higurashi Gou Episode 23 Reaction: A Teppei Redemption Arc?

[EARLY ACCESS] Higurashi Gou Episode 23 Reaction: A Teppei Redemption Arc?

Comments

So when I saw this thumbnail a few weeks back I was like "EW, NO." He was irredeemably abusive. BUT. This somehow works, the idea that the dreams of fragments are making him realise what he's doing to himself... Hell, he's clearly an alcoholic so a lot of the meds are prolly to combat that. I find it interesting that the influence from Satoko is making him take action to be better, rather than him automatically "being good" - he's still got a rep, and a rap sheet. Idk, I kinda like it!

About sotsu's trailers, there is a new one

I really don't know how to feel about Teppei. I mean, in the VN he even had dirty toughts about Satoko at some point. I don't think he can be reedemed so easely, but considering he had an entire episode centered around him, probably he will play some important role in sotsu. P.S: I don't really understand what means "relative" in this case, Teppei and Satoko are not blood related and Teppei's older brother wasn't Satoko's biological father

If I had to guess, I'd say Satoko think the "accumulation of memory affecting direct relatives" is laughable because Satoshi is not affected at all...but since he is always in a coma, he doesn't form any new memories...so he has no chance to eventually change. Which is not the case for Teppei...who, frankly, is still terrible, but I can now see a path for him to become maybe a bit better...? I really like that Satoko does not forgive him, she doesn't have to forgive her abuser, even though he's attempting to mend things. It also goes to show that all these loops didn't erase her trauma...I really don't think she was acting, and I don't think Teppei getting better was intentional on her part.

It‘s not the medicines. They certainly help, but the root for Teppei‘s change was definitely Satoko‘s continued looping, though she didn‘t plan for it at all. The fear she displayed when he showed up in the village was the real thing, but she probably figured out what was going on and used that for herself later on as seen in Tataridamashi. Alright, I‘ve watched the entire reaction now. I Cognito also saw that, but I just realized how very ironic it is that Satoko of all people redeems a few of the characters. Her role regarding that strongly resembles the one of Hanyuu in ancient times (as in bearing the brunt of human sins and getting sacrificed, puring the sins in the process). Definitely an interesting direction this is going into. My theories right now involve Umineko as well, so I won‘t delve any deeper on this, but I‘ll have great expectations from Sotsu to tie together the strings. Also, I love Satoko.

I had the same feeling after seeing this episode for the first time, at first I was like "wtf this is such a weird and out of place episode" But the more I thought about it and re-watched it the better the episode got and now it's one of my favs in terms of character development. It accomplishes 2 very key things: it give some bit of humanity and characterization to Teppei and it shows that Satoko is still human. On the Teppei side, I always felt Teppei was one of the least developed and least interesting characters in the series, which is weird since so many Higurashi/Umineko characters are fleshed out and there are rarely characters that are just "bad guys". So I think this episode did a great job of giving Teppei some bit of extra development without having to fully redeem him. On the Satoko side, you have a girl who has no problem jumping in front of trucks or plotting to kill her friends....yet she shudders and is helpless as a child in the face of her past abuser. It goes to show how powerful the effects of trauma and abuse are. Even after gaining god-like powers and immortality, she is still afraid of Teppei and he still has a hold over her. So it kinda shows that Satoko has more humanity to her than previous episodes let on, even if she is still psychopathic.

Oh, as an aside: it might be fun to react to the Sotsu (season 2) teaser trailer after you watch the last episode of the season! It's not long and doesn't show too much but it would be a good time to react to it if you wanted! If you just type in Higurashi Sotsu trailer on Youtube, you can find it uploaded by Funimation.

I thought this was such a weird episode too. It's kind of funny though, apparently Teppei is hugely popular among japanese audiences so this Teppei redemption arc seemed to go over really well. Even though this is hardly enough to redeem his actions in past fragments, it's nice to see that Ryukishi is finally getting around to showing his humanity since he mentioned in the VN that Teppei was the one of the only characters he didn't get to humanize in the original series. But yeah, the implication seems to be that as a result of all of Satako's loops, people around her are starting to get memories of previous worlds. Satako isn't trying specifically to get Teppei to remember anything, it just seems to be a byproduct of her loops that he remembers how shitty his life has been in countless other fragments and decides to make amends this go around. The next episode is an interesting one too, but I think I share in your opinion that this was a weird second-to-last episode. You have to imagine how weird it was for people watching it as it came out because we didn't even know if there would be a second season by this point!

Fun little fact. Eua is the Greek way of saying Eve like Eve from the Bible. What the means for this Eua in higurashi is unknown but names always hold a significance

Golden Witch Beatrice

It would be ironic if Satoko ends up "saving" or redeeming every single character by continuing her villainous path. Perhaps Rina will be the next one to become a decent person. Or Okonogi. Nomura maybe?
