[EARLY ACCESS] Higurashi Gou Episode 21 Reaction: Too Far Gone?

Comments

I'm kinda hoping Rika will get to view Satoko's fragments at some point. Also, the being that gave Satoko power, is she just another form of Hanyuu? She did not give a name. Is she meant to be Oyashiro-sama - she has very similar hair to Rika, interestingly.. I think the thing is that Satoko is ALREADY twisted, seeing Rika's 100 years of suffering will not mean anything by now.. it's sad, and I'm curious how it can possibly resolve itself.

Regarding Satoshi....after seeing every loop of the original boardgame Rika was in (reading the VN, essentially), she must have seen and understood that Satoshi never, ever wakes up. At this point, he may as well be dead...so I think that she's let him go. EDIT: other thing that's interesting to point out, but it's the first time Satoko has ever held any kind of power. Considering how broken she is at this point, it's unfortunate but not surprising that she abuses it. Ironically, she is entirely unable to do the same with Rika. Right now, Satoko has already more than a 100 years of looping experience since she went through all of Rika's loops. At this point, Rika was calling herself a witch, IIRC. Adding that to Satoko's deep-seated trauma and most importantly her abandonment issues...the year she lived with Rika was the only time she was truly happy, from her perspective...But yes, she's still a full on villain. She didn't become one randomly, though. Another thing that came to mind was that Rika didn't really care about the people within the loops at this point. It took Keiichi's miracle to bring her back from that. So, I'm guessing Satoko doesn't see anything happening within the loops as "real" at this point.

Edit: I saw nobody pointing it out yet, but did your mic act up again towards the end or is my hearing playing pranks on me‘? Yes, Satoko truly is an interesting villain. I wonder if the thing that broke her is that Rika refused to choose between St. Lucia and Hinamizawa. I feel like that if Rika said, she prefers St. Lucia over Satoko and Hinamizawa, Satoko might have grown to terms with it over time. The answer to everything, we‘ll probably get in Sotsu. I love Satoko.

My theory is that Satoko herself is mindbroken already. When she speaks to, let's call her evil Hanyuu, at the end of the episode she says that she notices people who live in loops are not immune to the mental effects of it and Evil Hanyuu confirms that all humans will inevitably lose their mind and have their will broken with enough looping. Satoko takes this to mean that she can break Rika, but alternatively I think Evil Hanyuu is inferring that Satoko may have just mind broken herself by exposing herself to so many loops. Satoko's personality becomes noticeably more psychotic and detached right after viewing the fragments Rika lived through.

Yeah, same with episode 16, which had a lot more gore than the original Higurashi. You can tell that Ryukishi and Passione clearly had fun with this anime.

At this point Satoko's mind is actually even older than Rika's, because not only has she went through her own loops, she also took the time to observe everything Rika went through. And during all of this time, Satoshi never got better. I think Satoko has just resigned to accept that his brother will not return - she's not really one to rely on luck and miracles in the first place, as can be seen from her approach to games.

I totally agree that this was the episode that made me totally lose any sympathy I had left for Satako. After having watched 100 years of Rika suffering and realizing that her brother was alive, she’s STILL dead set on breaking Rika? Insane stuff. But maybe that’s the point. There’s some dialogue to come that slightly redeems Satako in my eyes but still. I’m excited for you to get to certain parts of Umineko! Lots of people have Umineko-related theories about what’s going on with Satako and where she’s headed so it’ll be interesting to hear if you feel similarly once you’re further along!

I find it slightly funny that the original higurashi anime was labeled as THE “yandere girl anime” for years when it was more complex and complicated than that. Then backend of gou came along and went full on yandere
