[EARLY ACCESS] Higurashi Gou Episode 21 Reaction: Ultimate Betrayal

Comments

This is very interestingly written... it's true, both Rika and Satoko's motivations have questionable elements. The fact that Satoko's answer to Rika wanting to go to St Lucia is to sabotage her efforts. The fact that Rika wants to drag Satoko to a school which she knows Satoko will hate (come on, loop or no, anyone who knows Satoko's character knows she'd hate it!)... it's very compelling. I can't say who is right. What I CAN say is that in the new loop, surely Satoko would have her Syndrome back, and the sudden stress of all those memories from the last loop could make her spiral very fast, couldn't they...?

I was still a little skeptical at the time I watched this episode for the first time: Even though this is outside of 1983, unreliable narration can still be a thing, so I want to give Rika the benefit of the doubt and say she was trying to help Satoko. But maybe she already came across as weaker-willed to Satoko or only caring about appearances. Something is up with St. Lucia still. To be honest, it always seemed to me that Rika was treating Satoko as a pet rather than her best friend. Sure, she helped her during the whole Teppei part and that‘s why it would be uncharacteristic for Rika to not help Satoko just as much at St. Lucia, but when Satoko worried about her during Minagoroshi, Rika didn‘t disclose anything to her for the longest while and sidestepped the topic. It was only with the help of Keiichi and the rest of the gang that she did. Someone who we dearly love, but do not rely on for serious matters is what we either call a pet or a child. Now in my eyes, it would still make for an ideal ending if Rika gets to live her dream and Satoko grows content with it, growing into a truly strong person, finding new friends (i mean, there still are tomita and okamura for example) while staying in touch with the gang. Of course she would end up in a proper highschool or university that isn‘t St. Lucia such as Mion‘s new school for instance. There is also someone else who she could grow to be friends with somewhat, but I won‘t delve into spoilers here. Your eyes will pop out if you find out, I can guarantee you that. I love Satoko.

Loved this one. Rewatching it gives such a deeper perspective, and I'm starting to notice some pieces of foreshadowing here and there, I think. But yes, all in all, this tends to show that communication must be a two-way street, and both parties involved must make efforts to overcome to keep a functioning relationship through hard times. And I have to say...I understand where they are both coming from. It really feels like a Rika and a Satoko that have not overcome all of their issues. Satoko refuses to show vulnerability, at least not enough, and Rika still has trouble to be proactive.

Vier is areference for another Ryu07's work (it's not Umineko, don't worry). Mitsuyo and the other thing are potential future references for the same Ryu07's work (which is still in progress), according to the etymology and theories at least. Don't going into it for potential future spoilers to that work

I also loved this episode! One of my favorite parts of rewatching this season has been noticing just how many times the show takes time to focus on the chandelier before this episode; very neat foreshadowing. Also the ending visuals to this are top-notch. The scene where Satako talks to Rika seems SUPER significant too. As you said, the entire theme of the original series was to talk to your friends and it seems like they're making a point to show that even though Satako is doing what she's "supposed" to do, nothing is coming from it. The obviously implication here is that it's not sufficient to just talk to your friend one time but I digress. The next episode is pretty insane too so I'm really looking forward to it!

Yeah, this is definitely one of my favorite episodes, too. I think they picked a great relationship to focus on, cause it makes sense that after everything that happened Satoko and Rika's motivations would end up naturally at odds. And I think it's a really relatable situation. Not, you know, the murder or time looping. But the emotional core of their conflict is something most of us go through at some point.
