Superman: Easy, miss. I've got you.

Lois Lane: You - you've got me? Who's got you?

Superman (1978) Full Reaction

quite fascinating how they found ways back then

i know... RIP

i see.. well in this case, i gotta give the most credit to this Superman here. pretty good job in 2 different personalities

exactly! that's what i remember as a kid too... is quite disappointing to see the change of plots.. and the mystery is gone for the newer versions

can't wait for it, if u ask me

he feels different right? i mean the way he transitions from Clark Kent to Superman and vice-versa, is amazing!

oh i see, interesting... will check the Donner's version then

oh it all makes sense they way you describe it. i mean Superman above all, if not in love.. has strong feelings for Lois. and Love is more dangerous than someone who suffers from dementia, or any other brain disease... bcuz the person who acts out of love, is fully conscious, yet lacks fear or reason for others. maybe is the very same things why we humans, got this far also

will do!

oh yeaaa. same thing. is quite amazing when an old movie connects with the new one. differently, but with the same outcome

It's a tragedy what happened to Christopher Reeve but he faced it with courage up to the end. He even acted in one or two movies afterward.

I find the 1978 Krypton scenes look more like a super-advanced society better than MAN OF STEEL even with the primitive special effects.

I haven't read comic books for a long time but I know once in a while they do a kind of reboot. One of the new ideas which I like concerns Superman's secret identity. In the Silver Age (and in this movie) we see Clark Kent is Superman's secret identity and he puts on an act as a dork (more so in the movies than the comics). The new way of thinking is that Clark Kent, raised by American parents, has a typical American personality (just like any other immigrant). The Superman personality is the one that is an act. Man of Steel seemed to have no interest in such subtleties but there was a TV show LOIS AND CLARK in the 90's that had this version of Superman. So Clark Kent was the cool one and Superman was a bit dorky.

I grew up with the Silver Age Superman. In those days there were the good characters and the evil characters and you always knew which was which. Lois Lane would often suspect that Clark Kent and Superman were the same but could never prove it.

Great reaction! You would definitely enjoy Superman II, which follows directly onto this story. It's ok to skip Superman III and IV but I also liked Superman Returns, which continues the story from Superman II with a new cast. Brandon Routh as Superman pays respectful homage to Christoper Reeve. And then Man of Steel rebooted everything with a completely new story.

Christopher Reeve is the best Superman there ever was or ever will be. The other Supermans have been good, but he's perfect. RIP.

In relation to your comments on the flying, there was no CGI in 1978 and this film was state of the art for its time. Every special effect trick ever invented was employed to achieve the effects you see here. I remember seeing it in the theatres and everyone was mesmerized by the effects. If you decide to watch Superman II, get the Donner cut. Both films were filmed at the same time, but Donner was fired from the project before it was finished and the version put out in theatres was done under a different director. Year later, the original footage and screen tests were compiled to realize Richard Donner's vision.

While Superman’s use of time travel was a character-defining choice and nothing he hadn’t done in the comics, the moment did seem to come out of nowhere following Louis death. This would, understandably, feel a bit too abrupt of a way to ensure a tidy resolution, but IMO the scene fit the tone of the film and the core of Superman’s character. The movie was about its hero’s characterization, not his limits, and the film’s time-travel scene, while controversial, expressed his humanity as much as his abilities. Superman was instructed by Jor-El (via posthumous holograms) to never interfere with human history, but his frustration over failing to save Lois reminded him of a similar failure to save his father’s life, Jonathan- so he chose to follow Jonathan’s words of encouragement(you are here for a reason), using his full power to save everyone, including the woman he loved. Superman was choosing Earth and humanity over Krypton..at least that's how I took it! Christopher Reeve was a great, charismatic actor..that's one of the few things lacking from "Man of Steel"...I really didn't like the performance from the new Superman.

A total classic. Its so sad what happened to Christopher Reeve. He was such a good Superman. RIP to too many in this movie sadly. Gene Hackman is amazing in Mississippi Burning. Its an amazing movie based on a true story regarding Civil rights and racism. 1964 murder investigation of 3 missing civil rights workers. Very powerful. It was done in 1988 and stars as well Willem Dafoe (Green Goblin) Gene got an oscar for it. The guy btw who played infant Clark? He played a role as a communications officer in the 2013 Superman with Henry Cavill and is doing the voice over in Superman vs Doomsday and Superman: Solar animations as Lex Luther. He's still connected to the franchise all these years later :)
