Planet of the Apes (1968) Full Reaction

You also have to remember this movie was made in 1968 when you had shows like the original Star Trek on tv, they encountered English-speaking aliens every week the majority of the time the so-called alien technology of that time was was believable as alien technology. When you see the apes in this movie use a camera or guns it’s very possible this was another planet all along that just happened to use similar technology so you don’t think to question that it was Earth all along.

btw thank you for coming here ^_^ it means a lot for us!

oh i enjoy talking with more mature people, i bet those were great times back in the day! and yes, this movie was quite fascinating for it's time.. and is before Star Wars, that alone is mind-blowing for me. the way they had a script and quite a fascinating story regarding the future of humanity.. it can't be too far from what we will do, too be honest

I just signed up for your channel after watching your youtube edits and being delightfully entertained by your wonderful reactions to the films and your interaction with each other. I just wanted to say how much I enjoy them and I look forward even more to viewing full length movies with you. I was around when this movie came out, which gives you some idea of my age and I can attest to the fact that it was a true mind blower, with the ending being completely unexpected back then. The threat of nuclear war was much more present in everyone's mind in 1968 so the idea of mankind blowing up the planet seemed all too real. Also, the makeup for the actors was groundbreaking, since no one had ever seen actors become convincing chimpanzees in such a way. You two are a delightful couple and I look forward to seeing your posts in the future.

oh man we enjoyed too! i hope we won't wait long until we see the next one! we will decide which path to follow though, many said to avoid old ones.. this one was the only good one

I really enjoy this film! I love old sci-fi movies from this era and the 70s (the genre is great in every decade to be honest haha), such great warnings of how society is going. That's why when you watched Blade Runner and Joy said the future is always ugly it's because it is getting uglier (like when humans go to Pandora in Avatar). Look at the world before it was stunning (still is in many places) but now getting more and more ugly if we don't start fixing in global warming, poverty and capitalism. Sci-fi really started as a warning of what the future can be if we don't take care of the world we live in. 70's sci-fi was very gritty The original movie poster didn't have the Statue of Liberty. After some time the twist was so famous, it was like the Sixth Sense twist, that it become widely talked about throughout pop culture and the twist became a bit of common knowledge after awhile. I got the twist spoiled to me from 'The Simpsons' lol. So I think that's why they added it to the poster because that scene was so iconic. I wouldn't rush to do the original sequels, they are decent but nothing special at all, some of the later original sequels are actually pretty average. Don't do the Tim Burton remake in 2001 its very average. BUT the modern prequel trilogy is actually very good! I think you'll really enjoy the prequel trilogy! 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' (2011), 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' (2014) & 'War of the Planet of the Apes' (2017) - They get better with each movie! The last two are directed by Matt Reeves who did 'The Batman' (2022) and are so good!

Yum

i see.. ok ok, noted

Ah so, the trilogy from the 2010's (Rise, Dawn, War) are all prequels to the original movie... but there's one movie from 2001 that is a 'remake' of the original (but that one is very bad).

i see, now since you mentioned.. we have to make a voting poll if we should watch the old ones too.. or start from the remake or which one is it

The newer movies are very different... but good in their own way. Especially the ones directed by Matt Reeves ('The Batman' director).

There are a total of 9 movies. Four were released in the 1970's that is a direct sequel to the original you just watched. There was a reboot in 2001 and then a prequel trilogy released from 2011-2017. The sequels from the 1970s gets progressively worse, so you may want to jump to the prequel trilogy to see how it all started if you don't want to watch all of them.

oh yesss... there is more to it i can feel it in my bones haha!

ohh yeah u might be right! but man the sea level to, i mean the whole land level rose so much!

yeaaa! humans are terrifying! even though i have hope that we will never end up destroying each other.. there is a lot of evidence that might lead to that! can't wait to watch more of this! i hear there are a lot of planet of apes movies right?

i know right? good thing i don't like to search for trailers, teasers or cd covers or wallpapers before i watch a movie.. but when i had to add a thumbnail about it, i was laughing like ''why would you do that?'' i guess people back then thought differently about spoilers than now.. but i feel that this is a new beginning of a series of movies that we need to watch, to my surprise i loved it way beyond!

i know right? i mean why would they put the Statue of Liberty on the main Wallpaper too? i guess people wouldn't really know about Spoilers back then, also people wouldn't watch movies or news about movies the way we do now.. but man this movie was something else.. now you made me curious with the continuation movie you just said

Imagine if you are feeling sick and go to the doctor's office and the doctor's name is Dr. Zaius 😁

Els

I still find this movie more involving than the modern CGI versions. I enjoy how even with so many clues that this is Earth (why does everyone speak English? Can't they see the Moon?) they still keep you guessing until the end.

Els

I saw this movie when it first came out and the twist ending was a real gut punch. In the 60's everyone would assume it was nuclear war that destroyed civilization. I assume the Forbidden Zone is forbidden because it is or was radioactive.

Els

Yeah you guys are too smart, you always guess the ending twist.

Els

That ending is iconic. But even knowing how it ends, this movie is a devastating indictment of the human race. Dr Zaius was right to fear man and all the destruction we can cause. This was a great warning to all of us and because it turned things upside-down, we get some great insight into our failures without it being too in-your-face, like the conflict between religion, politics and science during that trial hearing scene. Great movie! Moving forward, I would watch the newer prequels as they do a better job with the story, IMO.

Mr Jordan

Awesome! Hilarious that you guessed it so early. It's also hilarious that if you google search Planet of the Apes 1968 DVD, the cover of the DVD actually has a picture of the Statue of Liberty on it. Do they just assume people know the ending?! All of your questions in your outro, they will be answered in the fantastic prequel trilogy: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), War for the Planet of the Apes (2017). 1968 is a classic no doubt, but I think you'd really enjoy the modern movies. Thank you as always! It's a mad house! A mad house! 🦧

Ellie Miller

Go back to 1968 and imagine you are one of the people who see this movie for the first time in theaters and you have that twist ending. Back then you never see it coming because you're convinced this really is another planet far from Earth. But today it's gotten easier to figure out they're on Earth the whole time. I hope y'all will check out the rest of the films in this series; Beneath, Escape, Conquest, and Battle. Beneath is a direct continuation of this movie and the other films tell the story of how mankind fell.
