Totally agree. I think Nick was definitely right not to accept Ben's apology. Doing the work to properly make up for all the horrible things he's done is going to take much more than an apology. I think the only reason why I still sympathize with Ben is the idea that homophobia and living in a world where young queers don't feel comfortable or safe being who they are can create someone like Ben. I'd like to think that if Ben felt safe to be himself and love who he loves, he wouldn't have the darkness inside him that he clearly has. The symbolism of the rainbow waves coming close to him, but not quite reaching him, with him walking in the other direction was heartbreaking to me. Like he's so close and yet so far because his fear and his darkness causes him to constantly run away from and hide that part of himself. And he lashes out constantly because of it. Again, this doesn't mean I'm trying to justify or condone his behavior, because he still deserves to suffer the consequences of his actions. Everyone has their demons, but everyone has to make the decision to face them properly and make sure to not let those demons hurt those around them. I think about people in the LGBTQ community who might have done or said terrible things because of their own internalized homophobia and self hate. I think even they deserve to heal and find a safe place to be who they are. Again, I don't think Ben should be redeemed so easily because he's going to have to put in the work to get truly get there. But I do hope he's able to heal and overcome what he's going through as well. Although maybe that's just me. Regardless of sexual orientation, I believe that darkness and hateful behavior always comes from hurt and pain. Something horrible must be going on inside for a person to exhibit that kind of behavior. Their horrible actions should never be justified or condoned, but they should still have an equal chance to do better and be better in the future.

I feel like I'm the only one who was so angry with Ben's 'apology', and it's because it wasn't genuine. As someone who was in a relationship like that as a teen (I'm now 40- so a long time ago), I remember those BS apologies. I would keep going back and forgiving them because they would 'accept responsibility'. I clocked immediately how Ben's apology mask slipped several times when Charlie was reading him down. Nick was right when he said that Ben never really liked Charlie, he just liked having control over him. His home life doesn't excuse his behavior. One thing I noticed throughout both seasons is just how predatory Ben is. He's always creeping up on Charlie, practically stalking him, verbally, emotionally, and physically abusing him. He even does the mental abuse on both Imogen and Nick throughout the second season- but Charlie is the main release valve for his rage. Yes, part of it is a lot of self-hatred, but I believe, based on the incredible portrayal of Sebastian Croft, that he is also a narcissistic psychopath. My oldest is Charlie's age and he pointed out that if Imogen had confronted Ben alone, or if Nick hadn't been with Charlie at the opening, he likely would have physically attacked them. I think... as humans and as members of the LGBT community, we want to give those around us the benefit of the doubt, but unfortunately, there are horrible people in every community, even ours.

Apparently they chose Instagram for messaging because it was the easiest format to shoot and read on screen 😅
