"How did they not age in 16 years?" Just as a fun fact, they are 35 years old now, according to the novel (Wei WuXian has a younger body because Mo XuanYu was younger than them). However, as you jokingly guessed, they do age slower than normal people would; the higher their cultivation is (the more powerful they are), the slower they age. To explain the scene with Jiang Cheng's purple whip, it's called Zidian, and its specific power is that it can separate the body from the soul if the soul is possessing the body by force. When Jiang Cheng gets the suspicion that it could be Wei WuXian, who came back from the dead, he whips him to prove it, but it doesn't work because Wei WuXian doesn't possessing a body; he was forcibly given one against his own will.
