Polar bear didn’t escape from Belfast Zoo at any time but there was a thing in the 70s with Peter the polar bear. An escape scare. Basically a polar bear died and they were transporting his carcass when a few people thought he was moving and making noises and believed the bear to be alive and was now out of the zoo. But he wasn’t. I think they’ve credited this as the actual inspiration for the plot too.
