Here in the US, the senator in this film is how conservative Republicans are. They’ve actually become worse since Trump. This was based on a stage play from the 1970s, so some of it will not age well. A lot of the scene from when Albert shows up in the beginning is nearly identical to the film from the 1970s. So, the attitudes and words are not only from a different era but also from France. The initial conversation with Armand and Val when he was telling him not to come back and if he did it and all that. That was done for one very specific reason that’s not lost on the LGBTQ community. Most of us have known someone who came out to their parents and were kicked out of their home and told not to come back, just for being gay. What this movie did was immortalize how insane that sounds when the circumstances are reversed. And you reacted exactly how you were supposed to, but we in the LGBTQ community recognized it for what it was the moment that part started.
