John waters is an alternative director (at least he was in his early work), he did some weird movies in the 60s/70s. He's also done some more "conventional" work later, like "hairspray", "cry baby" and "serial mother". I didn't see his early work, but I can attest that some of his later movies are extremely funny, and you totally should check them out ! :)
