REACTSMAS DAY 13: Unison by Celine Dion

Comments

The second album "Celine Dion" like Bryan said it's excellent. Just to talk about three particular songs of it... "With this tear" a BEAUFITUL song written by Prince, "If you asked me to" which hit number 4 on the billboard hot 100 (it was previously recorded by the incredible Patti Labelle) and "Halfway to heaven" with the help of Kenny G on sax. But all of the song are great, i think you will enjoy it.

3 things; Song selection/Songwriting/Legendary French catalogue. This is VERYY long-winded, but since you are reacting to her a little more, it’s important to mention these things about her music journey. Songwriting - Céline has written song(s) for other French artists that have won awards. For her Christmas album, and her debut French album. However, she has publicly stated that due to her leaving school at 13 years old to start her career, she has a very big insecurity with writing/grammar both in French and English, and wouldn’t release a project of songs wrote only by her in French let alone English. When her husband was asked about that statement, he added “it’s true, she writes songs and creates melodies all the time but she will likely never release them. She’s a perfectionist. And with that comes heavy criticism of you, by you” Song Selection: The albums released from 1987 - 1992 (french&english) were from her first record deal where her record company basically chose what she had to sing, with little to no input from Céline. Walter A, a well known producer said he had to really motivate céline to complete her 2nd English album because she was not interested in most of the material they were wanting her to sing. Her new contract(1993) allowed her creative control and input. The Colour Of My Love album was the first album of this new contract and she dedicated the album to her husband. Her song choices for the album reflected a range of emotions from jealously, love, heartbreak, misunderstanding, and family drama that she openly shared. Good and very bad. That was reflected in songs like The Power of Love, Love Doesn’t Ask Why, Everybody’s Talkin My Baby Down, and Misled. French Catalogue - her French work is probably her most autobiographical work. More so than her English career. D’eux is the highest selling French album of all time and considered a French music masterpiece. Céline and Jean Jacques Goldman are very close friends and long time collaborators, JJG wrote the entire album D’eux(and others) based off intimate and personal conversations with Céline. In addition to the range of emotions the album included. céline and JJG also incorporated pop, pop/rock, gospel, into the chanson(French music genre that’s lyrically driven). I would start with D’eux album first , then go to S’il Suffisait D’aimer which is the 2nd highest selling French album behind her own D’eux. These two albums are fundamentals in her music background.
