Been exploring more weapon configurations before committing to level design. It's crucial that your weapons and basic movement is viscerally satisfying, but are also conducive to intuitive level design.
The more weapons we include the harder it is to balance, but I would like to give the player at least a couple choices to explore different strategies with. Furthermore, I'm thinking to break it down into 2 main weapon types that you can choose. The first type is the God lance weapon, which is a choice between beam, or sword. These are high power weapons with minimal AOE that slow ship movement while in use, and induce a subtle universal slow down effect to aid with micro dodging bullet hell patterns. The other weapon type is assigned to the mini drones, offering a choice between spread shot, or spread lasers. These provide much greater screen coverage and allow full speed movement when being fired, but they inflict relatively low damage. Moreover, God Lance weapons are effective against large slow powerful enemies, while drone weapons are effective against agile popcorn units that often come in groups. In total, this creates 4 possible weapon configurations. I'm still refining some of the assets, as I try to decide the best design for each weapon concept. You can see 3 different examples for the spread shot. They all do about the same thing, just trying to capture the best look and feel in context with the other weapons. I kinda like the clean look of the simple pellets. What weapons would take into battle?
