Hey folks! I'm excited to share another side of my art in this update. If all goes to plan, a physical release of Hyper Echelon for Switch and PS4 should go into production early 2024, via 1st Press Games. In addition to the game itself, there will be several collectibles offered, which includes a mini comic within the game booklet. Although it's not pixel art, I've taken on the challenge to try and draw it myself. Thankfully, I still remember how to draw, and the joy of it.
Thruth is, long before I got into pixel art, my dream was to make comic books. I collected american comics heavily from the time I was 8 to 12 years old, and during that time I made a lot of my own comics. As I got into my teens I fell out of collecting, as gaming began to take more of my attention, but I never lost the desire to make comics. Now, I'm rediscovering my joy for this medium.
As for the process, I start with a traditional hand drawn approach, but I do the 'inking' in vector using Adobe Illustrator. Where my hand drawing lacks, I'm able to pick up the slack with smooth vector graphics. However, I don't want things so crisp and clean they become sterile. By applying stroke variation and calligraphic quality to the lines I'm able to preserve some of the hand drawn feel. Also, the imperfection in my freehanded perspective gives some charm. The coloring is also done in Illustrator on separate layer behind the outlines. I intend to color the entire story if time permits.
It's a laborious process, but the results are actually better than I expected. So, feeling much more confident I can do this. Just going to take some time. More space pulp action on the way!
