Devlog - 8

Hey folks. In this update I want to go into more detail on the design process of the hub city of the game. This last refuge for humankind is appropriately called Omega City. Starting with the sketches, I first conceived of a large interconnected colony that ringed the entire planet. I liked the visuals, but felt the scale was too grand, as the vast development would imply a large population of residents in relatively comfortable symbiosis with the planet, lessening the sense of tension. Next, I played around with the idea of a much smaller ring shaped orbital colony. The scale and city layout were just right. I even went so far as to clearly layout all relevant structures in pixel form. However, I really want the gameplay design to be tethered to a stationary hub that exists at the center of the world you are exploring, and an orbiting colony obviously breaks this logic. Therefore, I pressed on to reimagine the city atop a massive space elevator. Just barely poking from the planet's atmosphere, the cataclysmic mutation extends nearly all the way up the elevator, only ceasing its growth in the cold vacuum of space just below the city. I love this symbolic imagery, aptly capturing the perilous situation, and the stationary design logically fits the explorative gameplay I have in mind. Furthermore, I simply removed the ring structure from the clean layout. Now, I'm using it as a guide while designing the final environment. Only a couple exteriors designed so far, but things will pick up as more elements get established. Can't wait to explore this place in game! That's it for now.
