I chose the usual route to a visa as most foreigners in Japan and became an English teacher. The first day of school started in only a few days and I was still waiting for my assignment, not not knowing exactly what age group I would be teaching and where. Good news came just in time. I was assigned to a junior high and elementary school in a small city on the outskirts of Tokyo.
Several meetings were arranged and I was quickly introduced to the city and my superiors in the workplace. It's a typical small city; one train stop surrounded by generic department stores, convenience stores, restaurants, pachinko parlors, and all the usual establishments. Right in front of the station stands a golden catfish statue. I'm told the town's mascot is a catfish. The residents eyes always glimmer with pride when you mention the golden statue. The city welcomed me with kindness and I grew a special fondness to catfish.
Progress is good but it will take a big push too get it done by next week. I'm happy with the way the details are coming together and think it will all work out. So excited to bring these worlds to life!
