You guys don't say you're going to "the store" or anything like that? To Americans the "the" isn't specific to which hospital or which store, it's just that leaving "the" out makes the sentence sound strange. If you were saying that tthere was a fire at a hospital, would you say "Hospital has a bunch of fire trucks outside, must be a fire." or would you start that with "The hospital"?
