The Eric Adams Indictment Is Objectively Hilarious

OA1073 - This week we are serving up the sticky Turkish delight which is the US Attorney for the SDNY’s 53-page speaking indictment against NYC mayor Eric Adams. Matt proudly explains why Boston is historically better at (among other things) corruption than New York before we get into the quid and the quo of it all.

Finally, we review Adams’s weird career as a public safety advocate and self-published author and consider what’s next for this “true friend of Turkey.”

I just want to say this episode was a Turkish Delight 😉.

Thomas, you are not the only person who couldn’t hear Matt. There was always a discrepancy between your resonance and his resonance and his was more fuzzy. Now that he’s joined the cult of Mac, the sound is much better and your voice levels seem matched. Well done!

Sheri

Fair enough. Lawd knows there's plenty of meat on that bone.

This showed up in my feed, but new eps of Dungeons & Daddies doesn't. Patreon isn't that great an app . . .

Gmork

Yes, I'm a little hyper-sensitive because I've been hearing things like "RCV brought us Eric Adams" a lot. Trying to nip that meme in the bud. How about "The NYPD brought us Eric Adams". More accurate and more just.

#1 was in my notes but didn't make the cut for some reason (as was the exchange in which Adams confirmed "always do" when reminded to delete texts) and I believe #2 only broke after we recorded unfortunately, but no doubt we'll be coming back to slice a few more juicy bits from this tasty doner kebab soon enough

Matt Cameron

Very good points here! And to be clear I have always backed RCV and did some work on the (ultimately unsuccessful) campaign to pass it in MA. I was being a little more flip than I should have been about this, to the point that I think I'd like to clarify in a future episode that I really do believe in RCV

Got it now

Haha I Made You Say Butts

It finally revealed itself to me just now!

It is still not showing up in mine. I just downloaded the normie version to listen to

Haha I Made You Say Butts

Also happening to me. I got the episode email, but it hasn't shown up in my podcast feed on Pocket Casts. Other Patreon pods, like Citation Needed and 3rdDegree.net, are showing up after the alert email. Could be another Patreon hiccup?

Stoldney McStoldneyson

For sure, good note!

Opening Arguments

Can you update me? Is this still an issue? Only thing I can think of is double check your payment details, I think Patreon automatically stops your RSS if your card is expired or anything?

Opening Arguments

Good coverage, but can't believe you left out: 1) that one of Adam's aids excused themselves to the bathroom mid-interview w the FBI to delete incriminating texts; and 2) two of his aids appear to be getting married to avoid testifying.

Gmork

Yes, me too. Never happened before.

Bevin Flynn

This hasn't shown up in my RSS feed. Anyone else noticed that?

I will say, the vegan meal on Turkish Airlines is top notch. Not many options as far as pork goes. Also, Türkiye is very nice. I recommend The Conrad Hotel (Hilton owned) in Istanbul. Perfect view of the Bosphorus.

Wow. I'm from Detroit and we may still be better at corruption than New York. I hadn't had time to catch up on the details of the indictment, what a joy. Tracy Morgan is spot on. Give the If Books Could Kill episode Thomas mentioned a listen, it is also delightful (and hilarious)!

Good episode. Thanks for covering the case well. Would love an episode about how MA does it better. But Matt said "Adams is not an endorsement of ranked-choice voting." This is totally wrong. Ranked-choice voting (RCV) ALMOST SAVED NYC from Adams. In a plurality vote (first round of primary) he was 10 points ahead, after everyone's full preferences were taken into account via RCV process, he was less than 1% ahead. And that was the first time NYers had used it. In a plurality (the primary), he would have WON easily with ONLY 30% of the vote. If everyone had given their second choices, Garcia would probably have won, because of RCV. I hate that the connection is being made between a good system and a bad mayor -- especially as there's no reason for it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_New_York_City_mayoral_election If the indictment had not come down, Adams would have run for re-election in 2025 and RCV probably would have been the main thing standing between us and a second term.
