Despite Disastrously Stupid SCOTUS Decision, Jack Smith Fights On

OA1064

One angry Matt brings us two stories from this week’s news:

After taking some time to think about the Supreme Court’s decision that former US presidents can’t be prosecuted for anything involving--or in any way touching on--”official acts,” special counsel Jack Smith has returned to a grand jury to obtain a superseding indictment in his DC prosecution of Donald Trump. How has he retooled the charges relating to the January 6th conspiracy? How much weaker will this case be without the many federal government witnesses who would otherwise have been called, and what happens next?

Here’s something everyone should know: AGs in 16 red states are now taking a bold and principled stand against--and this is 100% true--traditional marriage. In a suit filed in a Texas federal court last week, these staunch defenders of our most cherished family values argued that there are at least 550,000 US citizens who should be exiled from not only from their states but from the United States for ten years because they married the wrong person--and that the very existence of these families is causing their states “irreparable harm.” Matt controls his unbounded rage just enough to break down one of the weakest and most inhumane challenges to immigration policy in modern history before calling out 16 people who should never hold public office anywhere again.

reading the things they are saying, you can almost feel all the racial slurs they had to delete out of the first draft. I have a father who is a military conservative on the cusp of tipping over into democrat territory. do you know if any dry neutral reporting on this issue that is still honest about the implications. I loved your (matt's) presentation but i think my dad might bounce off it before any of the real info penetrates.

Test Ease Interpreter

thats fantastic, i'll have to check out this debate!!

I love this idea of homework! While I am Australian so wont talk to people about this specific policy, the idea of having a respectful conversations about harmful policy is absolutely one I will take on board. I often try to gently push back on Aussies I meet who seem supportive of Trump or express harmful beliefs and find it can be suprisingly effective judt starting conversations and giving food for thought. I have tried to do it about Palestine and have felt relieved to find that so many people share my opinions.

lol "shat all over Matt's request." must suck to be this bad at listening to podcasts.

Are you the one who emailed? Thank you. I haven't had time to fully digest it but it seems like worthwhile info. Appreciated!

Opening Arguments

OMFG I did not know this lolllllll Austin just know I've been reading and enjoying your comments for all this time never having the slightest clue about this. That is awesome, I too will be putting on this debate once I'm done with my editing for the month!

He’s actually finishing his ambassadorship to Turkey tomorrow. I’ll talk to him and we can try setting something up.

Austin Flake

Hell yeah! I'll have to put that on later. And I have a lot of respect for your father's work and would love to have him on for some real talk about immigration reform sometime

Matt Cameron

My dad did an Intelligence Squared debate against Kris Kobach. It’s was so entertaining and satisfying. Kobach and his partner were so utterly destroyed, I couldn’t stop laughing. A lot of immigration talk. Give it a watch if you enjoy watching guys like Kobach get steamrolled.

Austin Flake

Awe Thomas has too many kids and shows. But he got the show out to us and now we get to tell other people :-) (more than one person for people who are overachievers!)

KeepingThePlatesSpinning

Good luck and lmk if I can do anything else to help!

Matt Cameron

Love this! Thanks so much for asking. FWIW your answer to your wife's question was right on--and for a little more context, the visa would be immediately available to use to adjust to residency if the person had come with tourist/student visa (even after overstaying it for many years) but would have to leave the US and wait 10 years to use it if they didn't. I did an X thread full of talking points here: https://x.com/matt_cam/status/1828635952371122576?t=ZipdNWNv6RNxqhWw1ZlZ0Q&s=19. For a lengthier (but still digestible) explanation the AIC does a great job as always of breaking it down in an accessible way here: https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/research/biden-parole-place-announcement-helping-mixed-status-families-stay-together

Matt Cameron

After listening to the podcast this morning, my wife and I were heading out for a daily adventure and she asked if I was okay (evidently I was gripping the steering wheel tightly). I took the opportunity to practice the homework discussion, and she asked a few follow up questions that I found myself shaky at answering (eg, can't spouses of citizens get a visa immediately? [My answer was 'yes, unless they're undocumented in which case they have to leave the US for ten years to 'cure' that issue, then they can apply'.]). Matt, is there a good resource you can recommend to us to prepare more for this kind of interpersonal advocacy? I feel like I've gotten a good sermon and now want to evangelize, but Im not actually that familiar with the bible itself. Any kind of talking points/FAQ/article written for normies would be appreciated.

Despairing Radical

Google #donglegate for more background and why Jonson picked the wrong argument to favor. when Donglegate happened in 2013 Richards had a what Jonson considered a significant public account at 6k followers. For that amount he said she had too much power to shame.

Rachel J Larris

I'm disappointed that Thomas immediately shat all over Matt's request. Seems like something you'd want to encourage listeners to do, not call annoying.

samvimesbootstheory

Really appreciated the rant on state AGs. I currently live in MO, and used to live in KS, and have been railing against these men for years. Cannot wait to vote against Andrew Bailey.

Screams Into The Void in Supreme Court

Thank god Thomas you spotted WTF is wrong with Ron Jonson. I have a very public story about how I learned he was not one of “the good guys” when “So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed” and check out what he wrote about “Hank” in chapter six. I was connected a bit remotely to Aria Richards when this book came out and tried very hard to get her to write oped about her awful experiences with the author. She was too scared after having her trust betrayed by the person who vouched for Jonson. I don’t know where Aria is now or what she’s doing. But when the book came out I tried tagging all of Jonson’s male writer friends about his behavior towards a Black woman while giving all anonymity to the male jerk who started the damned cycle! I found one good link discussing these events. I was not the only one who was reacting in 2015. He was never an ally

Rachel J Larris

Yeah, it turns out it was more the percentage (50.8) than the vote totals I was thinking of with Kobach so I was working from memory and misspoke there. There are many reasons for Kris Kobach's political career to end, but the latest one for me is that I want to be able to dedicate an entire hour to trashing it. That guy.

Matt Cameron

When you mentioned Andrew Bailey running on suing Joe Biden, the first thing I thought of was Kris Kobach, who you mentioned won by a few hundred votes (it was actually a bit under 17k). In Kobach's close race for AG he campaigned almost exclusively on suing Joe Biden, but would never elaborate on what exactly he thought he had grounds for a lawsuit over, it was always just he's done stuff and we'll find it. Decide to file a lawsuit first, find a reason later.

Matt: I don't need to keep going...*lists every name* (which to be clear, I love and it should definitely be done!)

Bunnywithaswitchblade

Hi Olivia! We’re excited you’ve joined the OA crew.

KeepingThePlatesSpinning

My favorite part is that you gave us homework! Having information and nothing to do with it just fosters frustration. Thank you Matt for giving us something to do! Also Thomas wasn’t exempt from the homework he edited and put out this episode so he told all of us!

KeepingThePlatesSpinning

I have been saying for over a decade that we need to unite the Dakotas into 1 state. They have basically identical politics and cultures, they have such low populations that even combined they would still be among the least populous states (more than Hawaii, less than West Virginia, still about half of Puerto Rico), so it would bring their voter:senator ratio closer to fair (but still unfair). The best part is that we could add Puerto Rico as a state without having to change our flag!

Travis Alexander

Keep rocking my dudes!!! That is for you my California peeps

Jesse D Miers

ok, two things: 1. horseshit?! matt, I'm so proud of you! 🙌 2. I literally had to stop the podcast and laugh. out loud. for real. at the hex you put on bailey. 🫨 fantastic.
