Is this a thing that defense lawyers tend to ask for all the time (like, I think, how they usually ask to have the jury polled) because there's no downside to asking? Or is that more unusual?

I was on a jury that convicted a public official and, even though we were all sure, actually filling in the verdict forms felt very solemn and weighty. We just needed to re-read each charge to be confident we weren't missing something.
