Law School Doesn't Have to Suck

T3BE 25
I am pleased to introduce you all to Heather Varanini! In her role as Director of Academic Achievement, Heather spends her days helping students succeed in law school and prepare for the Bar. She's onboard to serve as the Official Opening Arguments Bar Tutor and teach us a lot along the way! In this episode we'll hear more about her journey and the values that she brings to her work; for this week, we do a full Bar Question and Answer to give a sense of what we're in for with her! The traditional staggered Q&A will commence next time!
Forgive the silly q, but I recently subbed and went back to the start of the (new) t3be...what happened to the episodes in between the one labelled "week 10!" and this one? Like I understand the change and intro to Heather here, but why does it go from 10 to 26?

The only stupid question is the unasked question. Because u don't know something dose not mean your stupid it means u are willing to learn something new. Tom you are smart in the things u know. U are a college grad. Don't put ur self down like that

I had no idea. I thought nearly everyone went straight from high school, to undergrad, then law. I'm seriously considering it.
Personally, I think law would be an exciting career! Way better than what I do now. Though student loan debt is a serious problem.

It's never too late, many law school students are older or with a prior career. Whether it's worth the money and stress is a whole other question.

Law school. So many feels and thoughts especially under the Roberts court. I was in when Citizens United and Shelby Co. were handed down. Absolutely the beginning of the end of my legal career. The law was not what I had projected it to be and I couldn't (and still can't) reconcile my Lockean aspiration with Hobbsian actors. Nor can I reconcile constitutional conservatism with liberty or equality.
I'm heartened to hear of others who can navigate this terrain with some kind of positivity, but also lets check back in in five years and see what viewpoints have changed.

I loved this conversation with the perspectives on learning and kindness. And the T3BE answer was top notch. Looking forward to hearing Heather more on the show!

I’ll consider this, if it can be done in reasonable time. Mostly a workload issue. I like this idea though

Excellent change for T3BE. Even though I haven't always listened to all of T3BE in the past (personal preference based on what I'm in the mood for, not a judgement on the quality of the content), I think it's the spiritual heart of the show. At its best, OA is about learning, which has maybe been one of the tougher realisations for those who arrived during the lost year and didn't know what the show actually was. They were expecting an MSNBC talk show about Trump, and I deeply respect that you've been able to gracefully transition (out of a graceless situation) back to the heart of what the show is. I love having a dedicated bar exam teacher, and not only that, one that will be able to further open up the strange concept of 'law school' to the rest of us.

I was amused by your comment about giving scores or top person. In Cambridge UK they post everyone's 1/2.1/2.2/3/fail result on a board outside the uni. But for Maths they read out the list from the top of the building _in order_, and doff their cap to the top result

First off, very excited to hear more of this, Thomas has done it again with finding awesome guests. Secondly, I dunno if it’s just me but I think it’d be fun to have a question and answer in the same episode more often.
Like.. have it be ‘answer from the previous week’ ‘question and answer’ ‘question for next week’ sort of things for the t3be episodes. Would give some instant gratification on that episode instead of it being an episode that takes a week to pay off each time. Either way I’m sure to love them though, and I look forward to many more awesomeness

She was describing "universal design for learning." The concept is basically, if it helps one student and you have to do it for their IEP/504, make it available for everybody. some might not need it, but it won't hurt them. So for instance, I always read all instructions out loud and model examples on the board.
The problem with UDL is just the amount of time it takes to modify your entire curriculum for every class. Like right now I'm adding "switch to verdana" for a summer task to adjust all my assignments, since I use Garamond for everything right now.

I loved this episode. and turns out I can handle a whole T3BE ep on a sunday, so I am gonna experiment with not consuming all my OA episodes the minute they are released! thanks heather for being awesome and nice work thomas!

Bay Area Rapid Transit “BART” is like Brits saying they are taking the “Tube” to work…it’s both slang and an acronym

No offense to Matt, but Heather's breakdown was AWESOME! T3BE is gonna be great with Heather on the show.
Also, it's encouraging to hear that Heather went to law school about a decade after undergrad. I've been thinking about law school but wondering if it's too late at 32. It's just so expensive.

Heather is great, Fantastic episode! I love the break down of the detail in the Q and As of T3BE.
As an Australian, I spent much of my time initially trying to work out if I was mishearing "Bart" train. What is a Bart train? Is it a Simpsons train? Perhaps a monorail? Does being in a monorail affect the answer?
If there's a chance the track might bend, the battery tort the defendant can end? 😂
