Judge Merchan: I Have Nothing BUT Contempt for This Trump

OA1029: Trump Trial, Week 2, Part 1!

Lordy, there are tapes! Our special coverage of People v. Trump continues, now with readings from Juilliard-trained, Tony-winning actors Thomas and Lydia Smith! (none of that is true except possibly our names.)

Donald Trump is now the first U.S. President ever to be held in contempt of court. Exactly how criminal is "criminal contempt" in New York, and what does this mean for the rest of the trial? Also, Matt takes us on a fascinating mini-dive on the National Enquirer. It has a very interesting history you might not be familiar with. Then start getting into the trial fireworks. Much more to come! Probably at least 3 parts.

1) People v. Trump Transcripts

2) Justice Merchan's contempt order

3) AMI non-prosecution agreement

My guess is Eli will be Trump if he testifies.

Wholeheartedly agree. Id also point out that people still use the "storm Daniels is a legal genius" episode to talk about that part of the story, so this will likely have a long tail when it comes to analysis. Taking slightly longer to do it well is in everyone's best interest.

Despairing Radical

I dunno why, but I expected Eli to be the one yelling Objection from the defense

+1 for the "take as long as you need" list Also LMK if you could use another voice for the dramatic readings, I'm a native New Yorker lol

Congress- the opposite of PROgress

Sounds like text-to-speech to me

Release the Cameron Cut, you cowards!! (To be clear, I’m just kidding Thomas, I too have three kids and empathize with the amount of work this all takes you) these re-enactments are just SOOO good though!

Love the addition of Lydia to the trial reenactment!

Fantastic episode. Really interesting and engaging. It's definitely worth the wait for these episodes because the quality is so high!

In this 24 hour news cycle age it feels expected these days for pods to churn out content....but that tends to lead to low-quality, surface level reactions. I can get those from telling my husband about this trial (he just swears and stares into the abyss). I really value you taking extra time to make it work. It's just one of the reasons why I listen to OA and not a whole bunch of alternatives.

What Megan said above! Also, wow. An hour after podcast flew by like a flash and we are still in introduction! ALSO, I have many beefs with this case. If we are talking about consensual relationships between adults, shouldn't these kind of things being regarded as blackmail? I do not care if it is for election reasons or how abominable Trump is. I find it highly problematic. ALSO, GREAT WORK OA team!!

Nice reference

I have nothing BUT contempt for this court

Who’s the reader with the English accent who reads the “stage directions” from the transcript - or is that Lydia doing a very good English accent?

Ruairi Hipkin

[muffled (Thomas?)] "objection" [muffled (Lydia??)] "sustained" ... love it, cracks me up 😂

I am a philosophical hole

This is a marathon, not a sprint. If y’all need more time than normal to curate these episodes we’d rather you find a rhythm and balance that allows you to generate informative content without the risk of burning out in the first trial. Thanks for all you do!
