These Are Death Penalty Cases In Traffic Court
Added 2024-02-08 07:04:36 +0000 UTC
In episode 1002, we get to know Matt Cameron. He talks about his background, his legal practice and areas of expertise. I ask him about the case he is most proud of, and you will not believe what it took for him to win it! Then I ask him about the case he most regrets, and... wow. Let's just say Matt does incredibly difficult and important work.
You do not want to miss this one, these stories are so compelling, and they make me so excited going forward with OA and Matt onboard!
Just found out the incredible news. Resubscribed, repledged, and after listening to a few episodes it's even better than I thought. MATT is the best thing that's ever happened to this show next to Thomas returning!! It will be so, so, so amazing having a public interest lawyer being the main legal voice, as opposed to a more corporate /mainstream liberal lawyer with an overly rosy sense of the law and how it works (or rather, doesn't), especially for those wrongly too often on the sharp end of it. As a lawyer with a (tech x) human /civil rights focus, I have never really related to or identified with lawyers like Andrew, but listening to Matt is an absolute breath of fresh air and I think a perspective that will only become more needed and important as the US continues its current downward trajectory. Combined with classic Thomas-OA format /production /values, this truly seems a win all around. Congratulations and so happy you're back & to be back!
Edit after seeing QnA suggestions: I have a solid list of guest recs if you ever decide to do a deep dive on privacy /tech law and surveillance of policed communities (including role of data /AI /algorithms)--happy to volunteer them as tribute :)

Welcome back, and I did initially resub for Thomas, but I am also extraordinarily pleased to have an immigration lawyer as the main legal guest! Welcome Matt too!

I can't second this enough. Obviously, what's going on with Trump is big news and there's a lot to dig in to legally speaking. What I missed so much were deep dives and breakdowns on legal issues NOT TRUMP though.

Love this so much! And Matt is wonderful. However my first listen was with the auto ads. Oh my! I am so happy to be a Patreon and avoid the auto ads! I also love that it’s not all about trump!

I agree. The joke landed the first time and now it's starting to feel stale and unnecessarily mean...not that Dersh didn't bring it on himself.

Lol i havent been back since 2001 i guess but it was perfect for our family and i have nothing but happy memories and a very good public school education (hbhs '98!) from my time there. I gather it's changed a lot since my time there but it will always be a special place for me

My inquisitive Interviewer is back! Restarting my sub!
Edit after listening: Thomas, you were on point with the interviewing. The constant "Wait, here hold up a second I want to make sure I understand you right", and "for the non-lawyers, please explain this in a different way" were perfect. Please consider changing your introduction back to "inquisitive interviewer".

Hearing the real OA theme song nearly brought me to tears today. I also audibly cheered. I've listened since 2016, subbed since 2017, and pulled my financial support after PAT took over. I feel a little skeezy knowing some of my patron $$ goes that way, but overall feel like showing support for this direction of the show with my wallet is super important. I am so so happy to have Thomas back and really excited to hear Matt's perspective.

yes! My first thought was the 6mth convictee could sue them for their insurance payout - but surely they'd have had to pay that back/been charged with fraud upon his conviction-overturn-ing...

Glad Thomas is back! Can we get a better microphone for Matt though? His audio is softer and muddier, this episode required some effort to listen to as a result. Great story teller, though. Criticism is purely technical and fixable.

As someone who grew up in and around Vancouver, WA and was blown away to even hear it mentioned by Thomas -- Why on earth would Thomas want to live there? I got my ass out of there immediately after high school, It's full of trump conservatives.

I listen to Strict Scrutiny, We Dissent, Prosecuting Donald Trump, and a number of political pods, and they all cover current events really well.
But, a classic OA deep dive on immigration law is refreshing. I'm looking forward to the deep dives even more than T3BE.

Agree on the intro comment. I think it's genuinely funny - well done putting the whole sequence together, it was excellent - but this is a joke that can only really land once. In future it's probably best to give off a "business as usual" vibe. After an excellent episode like this first one back, now it's time to make it feel like you were never gone
