It's fun to come back to this thread a month and a half later, see how all of the gloom and doom predictions never actually came to pass. OA patron subs are up 50% over the high water mark of PAT/Liz's reign of terror, Thomas is regularly posting content on schedule, and the new format is working great so far.
Sorry to all of the Very Mad People, but channeling your feelings into wishcasting failure hasn't seemed to work out, which is great for those of us who have always loved OA.

I would like to point out that Andrew also had his own candidate for receiver whom the judge rejected. Rumor is because his candidate had no podcasting experience at all and Yvette (aka Scibabe) has her own podcast business, and she is bound to court order to do what’s best for the business, not Thomas.

@Bruce King: OA had over 4k patrons before Andrew's sex pest behavior became public. Then they plummeted down to about 1k and have stayed there since. I don't think Thomas needs to worry too much about the sub numbers.

Is this THE Teresa Gomez? Paragraph break. I'm tired of the drama, I'm tired of being left in the dark. I'm only a listener, I can't imagine what you're going through trying to herd the cats known as white male drama queens. Paragraph break. I felt conclusions were inappropriately jumped to in the first round of drama, and I feel the same is happening here, I'm still about 3 weeks behind on the podcast, I always have been. I'll subscribe to law and chaos, I'll keep an ear tuned to this channel as well, but if the great minds of Reddit have any influence on it's outcome, let's say I don't have much hope. I got banned from that subreddit for trying to quell the reaction, I got banned for calling out the mods for stoking the fire, some of those mods also started to take over the knowledge fight subreddit, I got banned from there for saying they shouldn't have any part in it after they handled last February. I left Reddit after that. I'm nervous for what comes next, but the left needs a legal analysis podcast, and I hope Andrew finds a place to inform us going forward, a place unadultered by the new R-word, redditors, and the legal drama brought by average white people who think they throw more weight than they do.

2024-01-28 14:42:57 +0000 UTC
i don't think that either thomas or scibabe have figured out that the folks who are still on patreon for oa are either andrew fans, liz fans or content fans or some combination of those three, plus folks who like the subject matter and don't care much about who presents it. so if thomas comes back there's a fair chance that the patreon numbers drop significantly instantly. having no content will do that, too, but just not as fast. When you want to know what will happen with generic OA listeners who subscribe to a mostly-thomas show, look at what happened with SIO. Huge jump in subscribers Jan of 23, mostly OA folks, and a slow bleed of them - 1500 in jan 2023 to around 1000 jan 2024 and the trend is steady. Thomas is not able to produce content that OA listeners will stick with. Folks who want to listen to thomas have plenty of opportunity to do that. Folks who want to listen to andrew? Not many options right now.

Based on Scibabe and Thomas’ Reddit comments and posts it’s clear that they intend to put Smith back on the pod. The fact that Scibabe is gathering ideas for the show from Reddit shows she has no idea what to do. That Reddit is mostly Thomas supporters. Some of them genuinely want Andrew and Thomas to do a show again. That would just piss 90% of past and future audiences off.
I’m out. The internet is full of mediocre white dudes who can google real hard and yell into a microphone.
I hope y’all are ready for the list of excuses as to why Thomas can’t get the episode out on the day he promised.
Thomas came to me after Scibabe posted that anti trans crayon shit on fb because she was suppose to be a guest for the Georgia fundraiser. She double down with the excuse that they make fun of everybody. Look up Offensive Crayons. Yes I know she made an apology video. Now she is the tie vote in making show decisions.

I’ll have to revisit the history. Based on the audio from both sides I found Thomas to sound genuine, grieved, and hurt by the actions of Andrew toward others. Andrew’s “apology” sounded more calculated, scripted, and intended to build sympathy for him instead of his victims.
Thank you for sharing your views and the replies. I will revisit the history of this and await the final adjudication of the lawsuit
But I would much rather listen to Liz 😢

This is heartbreaking... I have been a patreon for years, I have stuck with the show through the drama, it's just one of the most informative podcasts on legal matters out there, and it is gut-wrenching to see this drama stirred up yet again. I really hope AT finds a new co-host soon, and that some stability may return; I really hope we get a statement from Andrew regarding the future of the pod as soon as possible...
And while I don't want to take sides in the AT/TS disagreement, as I'm sure Thomas' side has merit as well, I just hope they can work things out in a way that doesn't leave us hanging as listeners...

Okay, so.... I'm an extreme introvert who's a little OCD sometimes... I tend to enjoy/feel content when I'm in a routine I enjoy. Weird, I know. Listening to Liz and Andrew over the past, what, year? has been an acquired taste to me b/c of the drama between Thomas and Andrew. At first I was like, "I am NEVER going to listen to this podcast again!!" Then, ONLY BECAUSE OF LIZ DYE, I came back tentatively, b/c I love her snark on SM. I grew to enjoy the banter between the two, signed up to support them here on Patreon, and genuinely felt happy when I saw a new episode. Another poster here called Thomas' victory a Phyrric one. Couldn't have said it any better. I don't know what's going to happen now. Lots of spec on Reddit about the configuration going forward... I expect it won't be a good outcome... FOR ANYONE. We'll now have to wait for Liz to launch her own "Law & Chaos" pod, which I hope/predict she will. OA is dead, ladies and gents. As dead as the "OA" on Netflix (another sad demise. lol). Stick a fork in it!

And this is my last episode of opening arguments.
The past year has been intense, and I so appreciate you all letting me get my podcast legs under me in what was obviously less than ideal circumstances. But all things come to an end, and this is the right time for me to leave.
Andrew, you know I've loved working with you, and this has been the most professionally rewarding thing I've ever done. And I have total respect for you as a person and a colleague and a friend. You are a Mensch
Andrew Torrez:
Oh, thank you so much, Liz. And back at you and more. I mean, thank you for the amazing work, for everything you've brought to opening arguments.

Some people has asked for background info. I have no special knowledge, and have only followed along occasionally with the details.
My summary is surely misrepresenting some facts of the case, do not trust it, but check the sources yourselves!
The short story is, Torrez was publicly accused of misconduct towards women in an article.
https://religionnews.com/2023/02/01/american-atheists-board-members-exit-dogged-by-misconduct-allegations/
Then stuff happened, including the other host Thomas Smith doing an episode with Liz Dye, where he stated that Torrez would take some time of - more than that one episode.
Torrez had another view on the situation, and allegedly locked Thomas Smith out of the podcast platform.
Torrez then continued the podcast with Liz Dye as a cohost
at one point Thomas Smith sued Torrez. There has been back and forths in the case, but this week a receiver was put in place by the court. The receiver is a person chosen by Thomas Smith
The whole sordid matter is discussed and documented ad nauseam on reddit:

I'm ending my paid subscription after this. I've been a paid patron for many years - and stayed after Thomas' outburst. With Liz, the Opening Arguments truly reached the status of the best legal podcast. I loved the way discussions went, with Liz bringing her own views and information, and overall the show became better and more informative. Thomas, if you are reading this - you destroyed the show three times. First, with your untempered dump on the listeners, then with filling your lawsuit instead of talking to Andrew, and now with the idiotic receivership. (Not to mention your vitriolic, rude and uninformed comments on Reddit, which poisoned any goodwill I may have had for you). You may think you are a champion of women, but we know that's not the case: you are an impulsive and unchecked force, and I have no desire to contribute to anything you do. Liz - I will gladly follow you to any of your ventures, and I hope Andrew joins you there. The two of you are great together at what you do. Leave Thomas to the mess he's created and let him find someone else to bloviate with.

A real shot to the gut this morning. Liz, your commentary isn't just witty and informative, it's powerful. Your understanding of the law in concert with Andrew, was something that truly shaped my thinking over this past year. The sadness I feel is completely a wash when I think about the wonderful things you will do moving forward. As your sassy light shines upon the information and stories of the day, I wish you the best of fun as you uncover and communicate your research. Also, Andrew I hope you find another co-host who is younger than you like Liz, really makes things dynamic 😂.
Seriously though, I'm deeply going to miss this and I want Opening Arguments to continue.
Andrew if you need an idiot host to just be like, "huh.." or "oh screw that guy!" For the time being, I'm here for you buddy. I seriously love and appreciate your work.
Liz, cheers to your health, family's health and future endeavors. I will be supporting you and thousands, probably millions more will be too.

I'm sad to see Liz go.
I think us patreons are owed an explanation as to what is happening. I appreciate that the future of the pod is perhaps not clear right now but we deserve more than a radio silence in the interim.
For those that don't know, a receiver was appointed by the court yesterday, a receiver chosen by Thomas Smith. This way there is is a third party able to break ties and facilitate the operation of OA while the court case is pending.
Whether Liz leaving is the decision of herself, Torrez, or the full management or Smith and the the receiver would be interesting to know.
I wouldn't guess the receiver has taken up the reins so soon, so my uneducated guess would be a combination of Dye and Torrez.

So sudden. I'm choosing to assume this is not due to unfortunate circumstances. I'll go ahead and believe Liz got an amazing job offer that requires her brisk and unexplained departure. All the best Liz and thanks for the words so far.

Oh no! Liz was the biggest reason I tune into the show. Her wit, humor, and incredibly sharp legal brain and ability to translate Trump burps are second to none. Gonna miss you soooo much!

I will miss the way you make me laugh while listening to this pod, but I get that all good things come to an end. Good luck with all the words, and please come back and be a guest sometimes!
