Just to make a minor correction, the Copyright Act of 1992 made renewal "automatic"... you no longer need to register a renewal. The only real point to registering a renewal (or even an initial registration) is that registration is required in order to claim statutory damages against infringers. For all practical purposes, the copyright term is (now) just 95 years.
