OA583: Republicans Creating Handmaid's Tale Hellscape

The devastating consequences of Texas HB 8 and the Supreme Court's cowardly shadow docket ruling on it are reverberating not just through Texas, but around the country. Not to be outdone, Republicans in Idaho produced a copycat bill. Andrew gives the breakdown and we discuss some truly shocking NPR coverage of how Republicans are ruining lives. But it's not all bad news! In the B segment, Andrew takes us through the Equality Florida Lawsuit, a well-argued lawsuit attempting to fight back against the Don't Say Gay Bill. Also, we're not bothering to cover Trump's idiotic flop of a lawsuit against Hillary.

I'm horrified by what's happening to women and people with uteruses in the U.S. right now (not to mention the next looming threat which we know is to remove contraceptive options). "Pre-born"? What the fuck is that even? Why not go a step further and say the act of sex itself is where life begins?? (Side note: some hardcore Catholics I grew up with believe every sex act is between man, woman, and God, and the act is only for procreation, so this is probably not a stretch...) I agree that the normalization of shit like "fetal heartbeat" and "pre-born" language is the truly pernicious poison pill here... It's shit like that which legitimizes the argument about 6 weeks or 15 weeks - neither being a legitimate argument to restrict a pregnant person's autonomy to choose what to do with their own fucking bodies. I truly hope that this is just the darkest moment until things improve/turn around.. I cannot fathom how a supposed democratic society that believes in equal rights as an ideal can survive with half the population not having control over their bodies. Then again the GOP seems to have made erosion of democratic principles its only real policy initiative. I hope non-GOP voters can keep up the fight for your country's future or a Handmaid's Tale future may be the least bad of the worst case scenarios. 😟

bella ciao

This isn't about controlling women's bodies, saving babies, or religious beliefs. It's about regressing to "the good old days" when women had no power and an unplanned pregnancy meant she had two choices, marriage or being shunned by society. It's the same reason they attack minorities, members of the lgbtq+ community, and anyone else who doesn't agree with them. Their perceived loss of power and control. They can suck it. We aren't going back!
