HOT NEW VIDEO, "THE ROBLOX OOF", is up for Patrons!

HELLO YOU SLIMES,

Please find enclosed the patron draft of the the worst thing ever made.

This video is, or was supposed to be about, the Roblox Oof. The original plan was for this video to be out in early September, as a quicker 30-40 minute video to stave off the burnout from longer videos, but then....all this happened. I can't hide from long videos. They find me.

We're still waiting for a few people to get back to us, but we figured hey, patrons should have something to tide them over.

Some quick things to keep in mind for this version (NOTE: VIDEO HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH FINAL VERSION SO DON'T WORRY ABOUT THIS):

- The conclusion segment has fallen prey to a new problem added recently to Adobe Premiere where the sound cuts out for no reason on some clips, I'm aware and fixing it for the final version.

The drops are at:

1:34:39 - 1:34:45

1:35:28 - 1:35:36

Thanks!

- Some minor graphics and music aren't done in the conclusion either (Premiere has a hot new bug! If you import certain images or sounds, it refuses to display graphics whatsoever until you delete it from the project, seriously I hit render to make sure there was a version of the video in case something exploded)

- Kat hates some of my musical choices and also asked me to tell you a sound at 1:26:56 is like nails on a chalkboard to her - if you agree, please say so in the comments so I know how bad I did. I'll fix it but I would like to know how unique her pain was.

We're planning to have the final version of this video up within the next week. Well, within this week, it's Monday for me as of 5 hours ago (what have I done with my life). There'll also be extra stuff we had to cut for pacing reasons, and a post-mortem explaining the ride that resulted in this video and expanding on the research we had to do for it.

- Harry

HOT NEW VIDEO, "THE ROBLOX OOF", is up for Patrons!

Comments

I’ll comment here just to mention that this is one of my go to Videos. Just in general. Your pacing, jokes and the general madness of what you are uncovering have made this one of my most watched videos of yours and overall. Thank you

Mo Scheibling

I can practically see how Tallarico will respond to this on his web site. Agreed

Generic Name EXE

I will never get sick of this video.

Gigeote

Awesome

TheOOFVideoWasPOGSoThisIsWhy

Videos I didn't know I needed until I experienced them.

Colin Tougas

Loved this video, I can't imagine how much effort it took to put this all together. Just the research alone must have been incredible. Any chance we'll get your "And Here's Why" video about the Dark Pictures Anthology, or maybe Layers of Fear? I'm a fan of both those franchises but I'd love to see you cover them if you ever feel like it.

B.M. Deadrock

Love the absolute insanity you always manage to dig up Hbomb! Praise be to Aquaman!!

Alex

Forgot to comment on this when it came out, but this was posted on my actual birthday. Thanks for the amazing present, HBomb.

Jedasis

Late to the party here, but I finally joined your Patreon and wanted to just say how much your videos mean to me. They mean a lot. You got me to experience one of the strangest and most poignant game experiences of all time in Pathologic 2 and also got me to watch SulMatul's videos which got me to play Why We Know the Devil, which also reminded me of how art in games is just the best. I can also blame you for punishing myself with the Souls series. Anyway, this video was great. Fantastic work. I have no idea who the guy in the Dr. Doom mask is and the nerd in me initially wanted to correct you when you called Dr. Doom a serial killer but then I realized most comic villains are kind of serial killers and now I'm in my own rabbit hole.

Adam Clark

It's also important to know that Tommy's reputation was an open secret in the game industry, and that only people who were loyal to him, or were boxed in a corner would work with him. He's not just a liar, he's vindictive and cruel. He's also shrewd but overconfident. He's been burned by his foolish actions many times, to the point that Joey left them (tommy gave him a Rolex to stick around a few extra years), Victor left the show, and many people in industry refused to work with him. He was charging $5k per music track even back in 2002 and would just ghost them out to other composers to write, and pocket the lions share. Ultimately, VGL was a way to move beyond contract work and take the stage. But even this wasn't without controversy. Every step of his career, he's left a trail of bodies and burnt customers. The closest person I can compare him true is our former president..

Jay S

I'm happy to answer questions. I think it's most important to remember that tommy is actually a producer and showman first, and an actual asset maker (sound design or music) is a very distant second. He's also a pathological liar and does it because he believes he can bend reality around what he says. That belief emerged back during the Bush administration when the neocons were doing the same thing. I watched him lie so many times to people about such trivial things, just to maintain his image of celebrity. I think he's also very driven, and has been an insomniac for many years. It appears to be taking a toll on his mental health.

Jay S

Would love to hear more about this if you're happy to provide more details

ThisIsMyAltBecausePaymentFailed

I lived at Tommy's mansion in 2001 and know quite a lot about the things you're speculating on. I even worked on his SFX library and spent a lot of time with Joey. "It's always joey" is pretty spot on, but that was commonly known in the industry. The rabbit hole goes a lot deeper. :)

Jay S

Qaaaaaaaaaaaaaqaaaaaaaaaqaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaq

Christophe Le Bihan

That's a hole so deep it's like the white rabbit was replaced with a nile crocodile.

Oltanya

Watching you trip and fall down this rabbit hole was WILD, but more than an entertaining it was also just surprisingly chilling. It's insane that someone can lie so blatantly for so long and for the most part just completely get away with it. ALSO I JUST NOTICED TOMMY FUCKING LOOMING IN THE THUMBNAIL, FANTASTIC

Colby Reed

I also noticed that and I loved that "pre-ending" 😁

Xoores

haha - I'm glad not too many people noticed but I'm very happy it was just unconvincing enough to taunt a few people

Hbomb

I sincerely hope that "I'm a helicopter pilot" becomes the new "horses don't exist."

Amos Evans

when I started watching this I was like "huh weird that it kinda looks like he's in front of a green screen rn; maybe it's something about the lighting?" only to be the most vindicated I've ever felt

Ariella

Random and unrelated but have you considered doing a ‘Measured Response’ to Andrew Tait? I’m seeing increasing numbers of high school boys (teacher) who think he’s the greatest, and as yet no one has taken him on. He must be doing something that can be ridiculed

Angie

Is it worth reaching out for comment from Tommy? Not saying the guy doesn’t deserve what’s coming but you about to blow up his whole shit lol.

Sebastian Horey

https://twitter.com/TommyTallarico/status/1257411657493475329

Jindo Fox

I thought the noise was bad enough to be funny.

Jesse Dusk

i like the funny noise

laurn

Yikes, that’s quite a rabbit hole you’ve found there. Great video! It’s entirely possible Tommy was the first American to work for Sonic Team Japan, like, *in* Japan. The Guitar Hero: Aerosmith thing, though… I’m pretty sure it mostly happened because Harmonix operates out of Boston, and Aerosmith’s from Boston, and half the people who worked there also played in local bands and/or had some connection with the scene. I judged a Battle of the Bands once with a guy who worked at Harmonix, who was also the son of a locallywell known music journalist/scene guy. I don’t even think he and his Dad were on speaking terms at the time, but basically everyone over there knew someone who knew Aerosmith, ya know what I mean? Tommy may or may not be Steven Tyler’s cousin, and may or may not have nudged things in the right direction somehow… but no. Guitar Hero: Aerosmith happened because, like, if Harmonix was over in Manchester they’d make, like, Guitar Hero: Oasis or Synth Hero: New Order. (Interestingly enough, Aerosmith and New Order are both huge bands who used to own cool clubs in their hometowns and don’t anymore.)

Andy

The sound is unpleasant, but it doesn’t ruin the flow of the video.

Wop pow

Absolute cracker of a video. Given how strong your stuff was back in 2016, it's kind of baffling how much better, in my opinion, its managed to become in the last few years. Also, with regards to Tommy: more money than he knows what to do with, constant impulsive behaviour, obnoxiously boastful, prone to ranting or otherwise losing his cool, doesn't think through the consequences of hisactions, can't sit in one place without shifting all over the show, makes a lot of... nose-centric gestures. Would it be completely out of line of me to suggest that he might... how can I put this...? You know that song Koka Kola off London Calling? Yeah, that.

Kav

Fantastic work as usual!

Eagle Sedita

What a great idea. But yeah I agree, Hbomb is probably tuckered out.

Eagle Sedita

I love rabbit holes like this

Jake

There is a missed opportunity to connect Elon Musk into this, given he himself has done acquisitions banning people from stating they were the original founder, though I’m not sure I’d blame you for stopping here.

MadMonk

Love the video. Also I'm sure I'm the first one to point out in the comments that the sound cuts out in the conclusion.

Percy

I love the Freudian slip from Tommy at 1:13:13 “I have seven! Uh, Gimme-ness World Records…”

Rory O'Keefe

The sound didn't bother me. At 44:08 I notice that Mike Tallarico is also credited. Is that Tommy's brother?

Samuel Fout

The sound that Kat hates is something out of a horror game, but I think that fits the context lmao

Feathi

Harry, I had forgotten the rage in my heart that burns for sonic lore 2. The Harrison Splimby joke remined me.

Will Schwarz

I watched it twice so far and can’t say that sound bothered me. While using headphones and in my car. Let’s face it, it wouldn’t be an Hbomberguy video at this point if it didn’t break the hour mark lol. Keep up the great work you two. I can’t wait to see what Tommy has to say after all this.

Luis Quezada

1:36:50, instead of Monster energy, why not Carabao

David Ferguson

I was eager for the new video, so I decided I could be okay with two less dollars... I was not expecting this. I am utterly astounded and amazed. Great job, definitely worth it! I hope the weird editing bugs get fixed :( I didn't have an issue with the sound haha This was really fascinating. I hope the comment about your camera person is a joke and they're okay lol

Gates

not to objectify hbomb but damn he lookin fine

Ryan Fellhauer

Oh wow, this dude. Always kinda disliked him, he always gave a sort of narcissistic vibe. Nice to know my instincts were correct! So, I love video game music, and in the last decade I've tried to go to every VGM concert that came to town, and that includes Video Games Live. VGL is by far the worst one of the lot, because it's basically the Tommy Tallarico show. For half the show, he's center stage with his guitar and the orchestra is accompanying him. And even though the setlist changes from year to year, there's always a way-too-fucking-long Earthworm Jim medley in the show because he wrote the music for it. I remember the first VGL I saw, when he introduced himself and said that he had a world record for the most video game soundtracks, I could barely believe it. I listen to a lot of video game soundtracks, how did I not know who he was? My conclusion, without looking him up, what that either: he was super prolific the 80s and 90s and just hasn't done anything recently; or he wrote score that was so unmemorable that I never paid attention. Anyway, I guess I should have known he wasn't as prolific as he said when the fucking Earthworm Jim medley was still in the show the third time I saw it. Haven't you done anything else worth playing, bud? I guess now I know: he hasn't. Great video, thanks for making it. Looking forward to rewatching it when the final version comes out.

Aimelle

Every time Tommy was about to say "my mother's very proud" I was practically begging him not to say it again, lol

ben

Around the time you got to deleting his record I was like what is the point of this lol it just seemed mean spirited. I do think you got there in the end with the conclusion though. It's crazy to think about how much "history" is just grifters or liars or rich people writing the narrative.

Ashley

A friend of mine in high school INSISTED he had a special edition of Pendulum's newest album, Immersion, but where every song was twice as long.

Hbomb

It's been a day since I've watched this video, but I can't stop thinking about how, just by asking one(1) question, you've(plural) taken away some rando's favourite toy...its...so funny??? Hilariously broken that by attempting to percieve a lie has caused it to disperse like a bad smell

Clockwork Clown

So who were the "expert external consultants" who have "professional links to the field in question"? I wonder if those consultants were affiliated with GANG in some way. I suppose it wouldn't be surprising given the amount of self-dealing Tallarico did through GANG. Perhaps the email prompted Guinness to put 2 and 2 together and, upon finding a conflict of interest, remove the record.

Scot McGregor

The bit on preserving what history we can really hit home. My grandpa died recently and I found a chest full of newspaper clippings from the late 30s early 40s, letter correspondences between two lovers from the 20s, and photos of different national and state parks taken the year each was established. I was thinking of scanning them and uploading them to a blog, bc if I don't, it really will be lost history.

Rachael Steiger

Okay, that Mandalore anecdote is fantastic! Carry on.

Citizen Cain, PhD

it was a bold choice to film yourself on a green background. but I’m sure no one will photoshop anything ridiculous behind you.

Shelby Fawn

Has anybody told Tommy that he is about to have a very bad day?

David Ferguson

Sound cuts out at 1:34:40 for a few seconds for me. Also this video is wild and I Had no idea I wanted it

Angie

This is delightful. His continued insistence that he's the first American to work on Sonic reminds me of my cousin who insisted he owned the first copy of Banjo-Kazooie and went all the way to Japan to get it and shook hands with everybody there. Which was strange to me when, a few months later, I beat it and noticed that all the credits were very English names.

Stormbourne

I like the "ARE YOU READYYYYY" sound because it's what I've always imagined you hear right after dying as your soul swan dives into the pits of hell.

Punchnik The Furhog

just watched and my main question is... are you ok? lol

Quinn

Great video, it started as a fun digression, became a delirious deep dive/fever dream, and finished with something really poignant that (to me, at least) justified why these weird escalating lies mattered. The EWJ soundtrack will always slap, but god, what a bozo. The 1:26:56 sound effect wasn't physically painful, but I thought it was some kind of audio glitch or maybe needed an accompanying visual effect to come across as intentional.

BaronHaynes

What a bizarre trip into complete insanity. Why did I just watch every second of a feature length film on a 3 second sound effect? 10/10 Thanks Hbomb

Conor Hickey

Twisted! I love these descents into madness! You glimpse the unthinkable so we don't have to

Komisarz

oh my god harry this was incredible, i laughed and also was ENRAGED. also truly always relevant, can’t stop thinking about what’s going on with disco elysium rn

Shoshana

The 1:26:56 sound didn't bother me at all.

Michael David

This is truly an amazing rabbithole, better twists than any movie in years. When the audio dropped though, I did assume that the alleged sound designer Tommy finally got his revenge and muted you. Or got Joey to do it

Auspun

The point about the Bird's Nest Stadium's capacity is not wrong, but the number 80,000 refers to its capacity for sporting events. Stadium concerts, on the other hand, can host more people because of the additional space on the field. According to Wikipedia, the Bird's Nest's record concert crowd seems to have been 90,000. (As I said: the point stands, but the 80,000 is not as hard a line as is implied.)

Alan Mattli

Re: the 1:26:56 sound. It wasn't unbearable... but it was the only unpleasant part of the video imo

Howlcat

[mobile patreon does not let me add line breaks, apparently? boo] Long videos finding you are your battle scars. Wear them with pride.

Pearfalse

The weird sound is fine. The thing you could have done wrong here, but didn’t, would be to make it too loud, which amateur video producers do all the time with TV static sfx. Kat may be wonderful but she is also a WEAKSAUCE BABY apparently

Pearfalse

there's a couple sections in the last five minutes where the sound just cuts out?

Pander_To_Panda

I would just like to thank Tommy for this great video essay. Great job, Tommy!!

Sarah L

The unexpected joke line you slipped in at the end about the "monster energy sodden fingers" made me laugh so hard my dog came running over to make sure I was okay. Your particular sense of humor is my favorite in the world. Keep up the great work!

Clove Olson

I half expected you to suddenly drop the fact that Tommy didn't even work at his own company that's NAMED after himself. That's how wild this got! Do love the eventual conclusion tho

Siona Larsen

"expand, and not the sexy kind" "speaking of artificial inflation" Something you wanna tell us, Harris? 🤨

Lars Flyger

Also, heartily agreeing with those folks who are saying they'd like some clarification around contacting Joey. I spent a good chunk of the vid expecting you to bring up that you emailed him, and while I got it when I read Kat's response about not wanting to put him in an awkward position (understandable!), some mention in-video of that would help a lot with the unfulfilled anticipation (and the subsequent feeling of disappointment at missing the obvious next investigative step)

Asher Silverman

Oh and also, that "40% of cops" aside was PERFECT

Victoria Borges

Incredible. I love stories like this-- where correcting one little misconception spirals into an investigative journalism extravaganza on how one shitty dude is able to get away with SO MUCH because the system around him just doesn't care. (Any other You're Wrong About fans in the chat, by chance?) Anyway, I think this is really important work. Like you said, we really are at a crucial moment in videogame history, and I'm seeing echoes here of film history. If we don't call this bullshit out we're going to end up with another Thomas Edison-- one wealthy douche who did a tiny amount of creative work, mostly took credit for all the labor of his employees, used the legal system to harass people out of making competing creative work, and is now remembered by normal people as the greatest inventor of all time and father of the film industry. The generation who could correct the record on him is now entirely lost, along with at least 90% of their work.

Victoria Borges

Really neat video! I like the direction you took it, it wasn't what I expected at all. Also, I now can't help but wonder if the "Oof!" sound the Roblox guys got off a disc was in fact an effect included in that old sound library that Tommy won an "award" for. It would be absolutely bonkers if the sound wasn't even stolen in the first place. Anyway, rad!

Asher Silverman

I mean, I guess you could say the subject of this video doesn't "matter" but a lot of things he has covered don't "matter", he just covers them because he finds them interesting to talk about. If it's an interesting rabbithole, why not make a video about it?

Dr. Caesar MD

this was excellent

David Adams

As for the sound, I don't find it annoying but I don't find it particularly funny either, it's just a sound. If it's a reference, I don't know it

Dylan Wignall

I love that the intro of this video takes about six different twists before one can figure out what it's actually about. It's like listening to my own brain!

Dylan Wignall

Incredible work harry, excited to see it published

Tom Stoddard

I remember watching a video by wired interviewing game composers and sound designers and tommy was there, I thought he was a clever but like a bit all over the place, but i still thought it would be cool to be a game audio designer. But now obviously I don't know what to believe lol, great video though The Crime sound is perfect btw

Harry Is Cool

also bless kat for all the work shes doing

Calysto

the soundeffect isnt the worst one ive heard you use. my personal nightmare was the peanut butter on the dog. really cool video btw. i love it when seemingly simple topics go down a rabbit hole

Calysto

Yeah, problem is it's a myth. The study that brought this "factoid" up is about 30 years old, for starters, and was a survey. Not a real study. More current research, including a larger empirical study with thousands of responses from 2009 notes, 'Over 87 percent of officers reported never having engaged in physical domestic violence in their lifetime.' Blumenstein, Lindsey, Domestic violence within law enforcement families: The link between traditional police subculture and domestic violence among police (2009). Graduate Theses and Dissertations. It really bothers me that he recently put out a giant video on how people push pseudoscience...and then he pushes pseudoscience himself.

SaintHeartwing

I can't believe you didn't use the quote "Truth does not do as much good in the world as its counterfeits do evil." from you know where

brizzlybear

Sound gone again from 1:35:28 til 1:35:36

brizzlybear

Idk if anyone pointed this out but my second criticism is sound cuts out at 1:34:39 til 1:34:45 Loved it otherwise!!!

brizzlybear

I hope this isn’t too harsh, but I’ve watched the first 1 hour of the video and I don’t get why you made it; Why would you spend so much effort to tear into someone so insignificant? Even if everything Tommy claimed was true, those would be petty achievements. This video made me feel bad, because as I watched it I could only think about how your well thought out videos: videos that changed my mind on how I view game design, art and data; Would take longer to make. As a fan, I love seeing you play video games. I was lucky enough to watch your Overwatch stream; And although the game bugged out often, you made me laugh with your commentary. If you could pre-record yourself playing a game you enjoy, I think it will be entertaining. (As content for patrons between the time it takes for the usual videos to finish) Again, I hope this isn’t too harsh. You are my favorite Youtuber.

Or Light Shawat

Also, something to add on, but isn't necessary to change your video's script over: there *is* actually a bit of a seedy underbelly to the Garry's Mod community; servers charging an astronomical amount of money for special access and even admin power on communities to KIDS, a whole subsection of developers making money off-platform for exclusive addons, a lot of content stealing going on between those addon creators, even weird and invasive DRM on addons used by hundreds of servers. There's many servers that actually operate like a business, some even having DEDICATED OFFICES to operate them, but they're businesses run like a Garry's Mod server which means it's a nightmare corporation with no benefits that only the people at the top actually earn money for. You know, because time is a flat circle and the games industry is hell no matter what you do!

Casey Billadeau

I'm sorry Kat, but I absolutely LOVED the sound effect. It sounds like it's from hell and that's why it's perfect. Before I even read your comments on it, I actually remember it vividly and I think it adds to the pure insanity that is Tommy's life. I also think it works for me personally because I know the song (and also because it was used earlier in the video.) This video was fantastic. As someone who's followed Tommy through the Intellevision saga, I had NO idea how deep the rabbit hole went. Great job, Harry and Kat (and anyone else who might've been involved too.)

Casey Billadeau

I'm not a fan of the use of "insane" to describe Tommy's house at 9:20. I would class it as ableist: it's the kind of thing people say about some of my interests, and since I'm autistic and have these interests because I'm autistic, it feels incredibly ableist to label my interests as "insane." I don't think whether Tommy is autistic (or has any other neurological condition) is important, since the implication remains: having a lot of stuff in your house and showing it off is "insane." But apart from that, this is a great video :)

Devon

Tommy Tallarico is gonna be SO pissed at you, H-Man.

Professor Hazard

No wonder I'm seeing Tommy Tallarico in my feeds...i thought he had died or something

Barrett Madison

I think the audio at 1:26:56 is fine, but it is a little strange and out of place. It kind of sounds like you were going for something else that didn't land

Quitpayload

I have a second criticism. That thing you do where you cut to something else just before you finish saying a word. I usually like it when you do that, but in the case of this video I think you do it too much to the point of it becoming distracting

Quitpayload

I for one am disappointed you did not find space for any more Byzantine history jokes. (JK great work here!)

Liquid-Easy

My only criticism is there aren't enough explosion sounds 🧐

brizzlybear

That sound effect at 1:26:56 was definitely grating for me and I typically don't get bothered by things like that. It was fine once the words came in but the start of it was pretty jarring. Otherwise, loved the video!

Foxtrek_64

I have always been obsessed with Tommy since the awesome music from Tomorrow Never Dies and the absolute torrent of horseshit that comes out of his mouth but I never realised how unbelievable deep this went. This has gotta be the most impressive deep dive I've ever seen

Toby Cruse

Same!! I remember just finding him obnoxious and thinking it was a bit weird between him and the conductor of the orchestra (who was also an accomplished video game composer iirc), and now I get why. It was a fun concert, but I definitely wouldn’t go again after this video.

Dino

That was an extremely wild ride you just took us on, wow. Also, I can confirm the time-stamped sound was terrible to listen to. Thanks for all the hard work! (also to Kat and anyone else who may have worked on this video <3)

Seth

I look forward to tommy threatening legal action against you.

Hedrigal

Having been to a Video Games Live concert in 2011 (and enjoyed it overall), I now feel validated in my Very Off Vibes read on Tommy

Tom

I was fine with the sound, but then again I have also been known to find Japanese noise music to be soothing so I may not be the most reliable opinion. That said, omg. That was well worth the watch. So jam packed with information I had no idea I needed to know (starting with, wth Roblox is) and a wild and slippery rabbit hole to follow you down.. wait. That sounded wrong. It was fascinating and now I have to go back to cooking after getting distracted for an hour and a half.

Enname

Bro I need you to know I'd watch 24 hours videos of you no lie.

brizzlybear

What's the song at 31:20? I should know this, but I can't put my finger on it, and it's going to kill me.

Ll

Not to be nitpicky Harry but haven't you also been lying to investors? I signed up expecting obsessive shitposting about games I will never play, not gritty investigative journalism exposing decades of deceit. Also the sound is magical and brain-itch-scratching.

Gilaine

I cannot fall asleep without the audio from your videos at this point and I am glad to add Roblox Oof to the rotation

Collin Json

also really enjoyed the beginning where you show all the sounds effects being shared amongst movies. i like finding the doom door opening/closing sound effects in other games and movies and shit. theres an absolute fuck ton of em though i cant think of any off hand.

VexedClown

when can we get the directors cut of this?

VexedClown

😡😡😡

Kat Lo

Ah that makes sense. Thanks for the reply!

Hobothehill

Unpleasantly teeth-tingling that sound, but appropriately used! But also I did turn down the volume way low for that specific bit so... hmmm.

Edwyn Tiong

I really enjoyed this, thank you. It’s the story I never knew I wanted to hear…although I think bits of my soul left my body every time I saw a clip of him lying. But drawing attention to the unfortunately common exploitation of creators/labor is incredibly important and doesn’t happen nearly enough. This is definitely one of my favorites of yours.

peachycliodhna

OOF

David Thompson

I might be wrong but I don't think Shigeru Miyamoto worked on Metroid prime. Historically he hasn't had a lot to do with Metroid, and I really don't think he had anything developmental to do with Metroid prime.

Maddie King

Amazing how much effort you put into these. Can you cover the Amnesia video game series next? I'm playing the first one, The Dark Descent and it amazes me how good it is even ten years later.

B.M. Deadrock

The timestamped sound is awful. I love it.

William Heathcote

This is great. I love the way you perfectly simulate falling down an internet detective rabbit hole and tie it to a wider point. If you get defamation lawyered for this it will have been worth it.

Arthur Sexcrimes

His name was Keith Robinson, and he was one of the original Mattel employees who worked on the 1979 Intellivision.

Jindo Fox

the sound at 1:26:56 made me laugh, so I think it's good

Ian Ramsay

Only like 20 seconds in but this is hilariously stress inducing bc the Wilhelm scream is my text notification sound XD

Book_freak

The sound cuts out for me at 1:34:39

Samuel Button

Kat is both right and wrong - it is bad, but tactical bad, and therefore appropriate. So she is wrong.

Lindsay Ellis

OH NO I'M PART OF G.A.N.G.

Eden Trujillo

This feels like my friend describing the wikipedia rabbit hole they went down in the best way possible

Haley Bedell

Sound cuts at 1:34:38 and 1:35:27

GrimmSalem

This is such an incredibly well researched and put together video, you and Kat are such giants of your respective fields (research? video editing? Funny jokes? Investigative journalism?) at this point

FunBunny21

I like the Bad Sound I think its funny when sound is Bad

Soxxox Smox

This is so fantastic and bizarre, I love it. I've seen VGL twice and Tommy gave off a very strong whiff of being full of shit then, but holy fuck

Minky

Oh shit, I just remembered I'm a patron!

Samuel Button

If Kat hates that sound, she would absolutely hate the announcer voice on Smash TV (NES).

Oxnard Mantalvo

The sound is bad but appropriately so. Apologies to Kat.

RobBob

I'm obsessed with the clip of Tommy used multiple times throughout (but last at 1:37:03) Like sir your Cribs-certified* mansion has themed rooms and an indoor waterfall but you can't afford to hire someone to properly install your can lighting?? *citation needed

Josie

I’m glad you acknowledged the green screen. It was hurting me

PerfectlyAdequate

Also from the first time you said the name Tallarico I thought "oh like Steven Tyler" and then you said it'd his cousin and that was my favourite part of this 1.5hr video

Jim Baron

The sound is bad but I liked that it wqs bad.

Jim Baron

I'm sorry Kat, I don't think that sounds like nails on a chalkboard but it did startle me for sure. This video blew me away! I hope this guy goes down for fraud. The conclusion is quite important. I hope people do stick around to the end and listen. People should absolutely be credited for their contributions to art. And I can say that because I am an accountant who literally contributes nothing to art other than money to Patreon. I am boring.

Toryana Frazier

Incredible video once more hbomb The sound did cut out for me twice for 5 seconds at a time towards the very end of the video.

dixego

I don't know if this is a necessary question, and I don't want to cause any problems (especially considering how long the video IS versus how long the video WAS MEANT TO BE), but WAS the "OOF" included in the library of sounds that Tellarico's company released? Is that where the creators of Roblox could have gotten it? Also I didn't think of the song at 1:26:56 as being "nails on a chalkboard" but when I wasn't expecting it, the sound there did pull me out of the video a bit

Lourdes Death

Honestly i half expected this to end with Joey showing up. Excellent work though.

Mulloy

I kept dreading an inevitable but thankfully nonexistent reveal of something truly terrible happening to his very proud mother. Hopefully she's okay and being proud. Also, geez, looking up any part of his background is a hell of a thing: "While homeless and living under a pier, Tallarico took a job as a keyboard ssalesman at the Guitar Center in Santa Ana, California. On his first day, Tallarico met with an executive from Virgin Mastertronic. Shortly after, Tallarico was given a job with Virgin to be their first play-tester." Followed by this Reddit commentor: "His origin story is likely a lie; particularly being homeless on a beach with an enforced midnight curfew and under a pier that had been largely destroyed the year before."

Julian Kay

I think the sound effect is annoying in a that seems what you are going for way. I did not have the secondary full body feelings i get from the nails on chalkboard type sounds.

Kate from the Rock

I actually liked the sound but that's probably because I listen to Death Grips (ashamedly)

Nathaniel Itter

My favorite time of year: "existential crisis in video essay" day. Seriously though, this is weirdly hyper-relevant in the wake of Musk-rat's court ordered acquisition of what used to be a website for almost real people.

Wesley Jones

Kat's right, its a bad sound. Loved the video otherwise! I especially liked the completely destroyed lab coat. The only bad part was hearing Tallarico brag so much

Little Onion Sprout

Stuff like this where she is the senior brand manager for Bosch in December 2020 and talking about their products on video, making it clear that she wasn’t full time at intellivision, etc https://businessofhome.com/videos/at-bosch-it-s-about-quality-in-the-details

Kat Lo

the timecoded sound didnt personally bother me

Crooker

we appreciate you 🥲

Pocket & Locket

I kept wondering if you were going to reveal that wasn't actually his house. Like, given how few games he's actually worked on, where did the house come from?

Critical Kate

i can’t remember where i’ve gathered this info or if i made it up lol 🥲 but that wall was a fake wall within the garage so im 99% sure they took the wall with them to the new filming location

Pocket & Locket

yes, I found myself thinking of the Halcyon video at the end there too! Really similar themes between them, I’ll have to go back and rewatch that one now too haha

Pocket & Locket

I'm autistic and pretty sensitive to noise and the sound at 1:26:56 is nails on a chalkboard. Kat is right IMO. If your artistic intention was to make people uncomfortable, keep it, but if it was supposed to be funny because how deep fried the sound is then then yes, remove it

Daniela Viera

This video rules, i was hooting at it like a sports match and startled my household by yelling "TOMMY NO" at it more than once- in re: the 1:26 noise it did set my teeth on edge a bit but not much.

Sarah Bobarah

i love the sound its perfect for making my brain bleed, which by that point is exactly what i needed from what the rest of this video put me through (compliment)

Kaelyn Morrison

i have pretty bad misophonia and 1:26:56 is saved by being so quiet - if it was mixed any louder i’d have the same feelings as kat lol 🥲

Pocket & Locket

I personally love The Sound At 1:26:56, it nourishes and sustains me No comment about the rest of the video, im sure it was lovely!

EVERY MORNING I WAKE UP AND OPEN PALM SLAM A VHS INTO THE SLOT. ITS CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK AND RIGHT THEN AND THERE I START DOING

Instead of a twenty page menu it’s his three Guinness records on repeat. Wait, his one record and two recalled ones.

Dino

i love the 1:26 AREEEE YOUUUU READDDDYYYYY

DuckReconMajor

Thank you for this. I’d never heard of Tallarico before. Part of me wishes I hadn’t. Intriguing nonetheless.

Christian DeFeo

In Brazil "Talarico" it's a slang for a person who wants to deceive someone into betray a friend or a love partner. It's literally in his name foreshadowing the kind of person he become since birth.

Leonardo Henrique

Kat is right the sound is painful

DedicatedSideA

I'm no lawyer, but I just wanted to check that it sounds like you are properly accusing Tommy of defrauding investors at 1:38:45. Is that a reference to the SEC complaint?

what what

The sound at 1:26:56 is jarring but it reminds me of the discordant music that plays in the RWBY video when you talk about the faunus. I have no problems with it.

trm246

Great video. Didn't even notice the technical issues.

Nesadi

This is one of those videos where I don't know how you researched it because I cannot bear to listen to this bullshit merchant talk even for the length of the clips you have in the video 😩

Jae Armstrong

Yeah this is a thing we’ve considered, given that allard removed himself on LinkedIn entirely, but we’re going by what is publicly available (and the bits and pieces of evidence that would be excessive to put in the video)

Kat Lo

the sound at 1:26:56 is disgusting AND I LOVE IT please keep it

Griffin Perkins

Tommy could have taken some help from the late Warrior re: rocket ships and fuel.

Arun Rajkumar

Also, holy shit! The comment function on Patreon.com fucking sucks! I don't know if it shows up for anyone else, but I have three previously deleted comments on this post. Those are unfinished versions of this comment because when you hit enter on your keyboard it posts the comment as opposed to every other comment system I've seen on any other website where hitting enter adds a line break. Also when text hits the edge of the comment box instead of shifting the whole word down a line, again, like any other comment system it just continues the word on the next line and it's causing me a lot of anxiety that my comment is gonna be missing a bunch of spaces when I post it. Not your fault, I'm just venting.

Hbomb *gesturing toward the Roblox OOF sound*: "Let's go, in and out! 20 minute adventure!"

RaddShreddy

I can report the 1:26:56 sound is mildly unpleasant with headphones, everything else was delightful!

Scarlett Michelle

Did you check if his mother is very proud of him ?

ugdpy

Tommy I'm not sure your mother will be very proud of this

Hannah Mad-Skill-iday

Why is he wearing that shirt? Can we croma key the 'OOF' shirt on him plz

Sebastian Duran

A small note of caution: retroactively changing employment dates on LinkedIn is a rather common thing in the startup world, to downplay involvement/investment in failed projects and maximise the ratio of time spent at successful ones. Unless old versions of the Mattel Manager’s LinkedIn profile are available, it’s difficult to say what may have happened, despite obvious cause to suspect Tommy’s story. Not hating though, this is hilarious and I loved the entire video

John Mapley

These days I’ve imposed a “can somebody fall asleep to this without being rudely awakened” test for the videos lol

Kat Lo

Even better most concerts performed in a year is actually somebody who did 700+ concerts

Kat Lo

I’m pretty sure that’s gary’s mod but hbomb would know better hah

Kat Lo

It does not profit a man to sell his soul for the entire world, but for Cribs.

James Rule

Only had time to preview the first twenty minutes of the video before getting to work. As someone who had no context and no relationship with roblox, tony talliwhatever, or the oof, this is all new information for me. Objectively speaking, this video has probably made my life worse. But it's been a fun ride, so I'll watch the finished product for sure. Good work?

Kyle Rudy

👀

Kat Lo

You’ll have to tell us the reaction

Kat Lo

i cant wait to bingewatch this in its entirety once its finalised (loved the part when yall accidentally sent one of his records to the shadow realm because it really does show how research and people asking questions makes a difference) however kat is right imo the sound effect in 1:26:56 is horrid and itches my brain but ill admit it does match the overall tone of the section its presenting

Ri

"Google 40%" - oof

Alma

Wait is the sound cutting out late in the video intentional or not?

Dana Fried

I don't mind the sound at 1:26:56 it feels like normal hbomb goofy gooberness

Yael Cohen

Lying by omission is basically a good discription of what Tommy does when trying to discribe the creation of the "Oof" sound. He's so good at it, he could be a politiction.

Harper Onions

I love all of the final fantasy 8 music in this

Urnow

The game is Gary's Mod its like a sandbox based on HL2/source engine

tom garside

The 1:26:56 sound is not too bad, but it would be funny if you could do an "oof". Tommy will try to claim this video is a hate crime tho.

SibirianBlue

Another fastidiously researched masterpiece about an extremely niche subject. Good shit.

Kitty Seraphic

Loving the video, I love when subjects end up becoming a huge rabbit hole. Only initial critique is the Guinness World Record bit seemed to go on for too long, but that might just be me. Keep up the great work!

Travis Clemishaw

The 1:26:56 sound is less like nails on chalkboard and more like Shodan from where I'm sitting.

Max S

oh my god, for a moment there i was sure you were going to debunk the claim that his mother is proud of him :'D i haven't finished watching the video yet but i was SURE it was coming after you cut together footage of him saying that like ten different times. is it just a silly joke or is it also a lie IS HIS MOTHER EVEN PROUD OF HIM

Will Barker

At this point, I'm wondering if "Tommy Tallarico" is his real name. :P

Tormuse

I think you should dig into him more about his fake claim about doing the largest symphonic performance. Symphonic is a catch all term which refers to a large orchestra. Basically any piece with an orchestra can be theoretically called symphonic. This includes most operas/musicals, a huge portion of classical music and a large amount of genres have added orchestral elements to become symphonic versions (symphonic pop, symphonic metal, etc.) This is a large category of music, some of which is very popular. So, I thought “there’s no way this dudes video game band I’ve never heard of did the largest orchestral performance ever.” I did some Googling and found something very funny. Guinness World Records doesn’t track the largest concurrent audience for a symphonic show because it’s really vague, but it does have the Largest Attendance for a Classical Concert. It was performed by the New York Philharmonic, a self described Symphonic Orchestra. They performed to an estimate of 800 000 people in a public park in 1986 (in person this time, not an unverified live stream). So even the claim he makes of the largest symphonic performance is wrong according to Guinness. It’s just lies all the way down

Aprril

The final fantasy 8 music was a solid choice, I love the use of Maybe I'm a Lion when shit hit the fan NOW I JUST NEED SOMEWHERE I CAN WATCH THOSE ORIGINAL STREAMS OF FF8, I LOVED THOSE

Chaotic Deluge

really really enjoyed this. only thing that felt weird to me is some repetitiveness in the early segments discussing tommy’s livestream in the red shirt (~18:00 to ~37:00), you rephrase similar points a few times and could drop some clips w/o losing much. if you’re still looking for cuts to make i’d look there, but no big deal if you’re past that stage, and the rest flowed really well

Jordan Tullis

oh my god I can't wait for this to drop, Tommy's comments are going to be amazing lol

EmmiJade

Personally I like it when there's a little issue like audio cutting out in the early release, gives me a reason to watch it again.

Amazing Stace

I've played games almost my entire life and have worked in game dev for 7 years and never heard of this guy lmao. Great video!

Loreydoor

Great video. always love that you end up finding something greater to say about the world. I used to work on a farm animal sanctuary and it was a really really lonely place to live and an even lonelier place to work. The only thing that would get me by would be listening to long video essays and many of them happened to be yours. Finally found the means to be a patron for a little bit — being that i consider your pathologic vid a coworker now

Chase

That 40% cops bit was hilarious

Calum Gillies

Oh, new 2 hours long HBomb video suddenly dropping.

Alma

I fucking knew those goat screams had to be fake.

KevlarNinja

What's not done about this? It's fantastic!

kaemon bonet

The audio cuts out for a few seconds at around 1:30:00 and 1:36:00

T.A.

okay i have a question, what is the game at 1:46 where you have that candy cane crowbar and load in a zombie? lol i have a screenshot of that environment somehow but i have no clue what its from?

Creamer

You’ve got about five seconds where sound cuts out around 1:34:45

AutumnRi

He’s basically thanked tommy for helping him start his career multiple times, so we didn’t want to put him in the uncomfortable position of having to comment.

Kat Lo

1. i love that this ! is a kind of revisit of your lolcow Davis Aurini type of videos. 2. i normally dont have any context for your videos, which i love because i learn something new, but actually i knew that the creator of Earthworm Jim has also become an internet weirdo debating about SJWs so it kind of makes sense that someone else in that orbit also turned out to be a crackpot. i might have to look into that whooe team and see what theyre up to. lol

Creamer

I must admit, I did wonder why there was so much analysis being done of Some Guy Saying Things In A Bunch Of Obscure Interviews but it made much more sense later on. Good video and excellent helicopter piloting!

Cobalt

Let me get this right: In the „Set Tour Bonus Video“ (in Feb 2021) HBomb said he has to dismantle his set bc his mother was moving. Did he record the footage for this vid back then or did he just move this wall with the flowery wallpaper and the hole and the duct taped picture to a new location??

Ella Waldeck

The audio at 1:26:56 is a bit funny but also if I had my sound up or had headphones on I could see it being real awful. Great video, hyped to get share it with some of the folks at the Video Game History foundation who have had to deal with Tommy's nonsense every now and again.

George Rohac

Hey all just clarify that the audio drops that we referenced are at these time stamps, so don’t worry about those we gottem! **1:34:39 - 1:34:45** **1:35:28 - 1:35:36**

Kat Lo

he is the goat who scream like a man

Keisi

An ancient Egypt themed dining room? Man has a Cheesecake Factory in his house

Keisi

IT'S JOEY! IT'S ALWAYS JOEY!

MasterEth

I fully understand Kat, I don't like the sound either.

Drazon

I'm haunted by that investor pitch video where the other person seems to be the "SEO guru" Neil Patel, whose previous endeavors can be summed up as basically scams. Intellivision Amico seems like a perfect addition to a list of "a website analytics company that violate US data privacy laws" and "selling Amazon fish oil".

Maria

The sound that bothered Kat was definitely jarring, but it's not unbearable (for me at least)

Mary Stapleton

I almost want the conclusion audio drops to remain, because they occur exactly as you're discussing crediting sound design contributers and it's exactly the kind of sabotage that could be executed by a bitter uncredited sound designer

Mike Craft

The horrible noise wasn't that bad on my ears, but better safe than sorry I'd say.

Mobius Scarf

Please never stop having videos that are WAY too long for the subject they're discussing, you are the GOAT. Also the horrible sound is great.

Reece Spencer

The horrible noise didn't bother me, but I DID check the time stamp the second I heard it because I wanted to verify that it was the noise you mentioned. I don't know what you can do with this information.

Mike Craft

This is kind of a small thing, but for some reason at 18:00 when you say 'ok', it triggers my Google assistant every time. One time it kindly restarted the video for me. Thanks Google!

Travis Clemishaw

Is Tommy the Steven Seagal of the video game industry?

The Brad Show

I also had a heart attack because he shares a last name with the evil CEO of my religious high school (which had a CEO???) but thankfully the rabbit hole doesn’t go THAT deep. I think.

Kit Brogden

my australian wife is compelled to point out that the scream effect mentioned at the start of the video was used extensively throughout the 90s - 2010s to advertise the breakfast cereal Nutri-Grain, which has an extremely hypermasculine brand and it's hilarious. you don't need to add it to the video or anything, it's just very funny and we thought you should know. (love the video, excited to see the finished version!) https://youtu.be/edV4MpCQzOw

Andrea Chen

I got the same impression - that if the guy had decided to keep a low profile so far, most likely he wouldn't want to get involved in drama now either, and really, good for him. Tommy seems like a petty and manipulative person, and trying to sort smth out with him in the public eye seems like a way to give yourself a headache...

cerehling

Amazing work Harry!! This was a delightful surprise during a bout of insomnia. Now i get to enjoy it again vicariously through my partner when he wakes up!

Kit Brogden

Joey Kuras is probably under some kind of NDA, but I'd love to someday here any words at all from the guy about this. I'm glad the he went on to have loads of work in the future, but I wonder what he thinks of his entry years being completely taken as somebody else's. Is it acceptable for every artist to only be able to be allowed to have success by sacrificing their first work to further the success of somebody else? (here's hoping he isn't also a steven crowder follower hjskdhgjkgh)

Rustnuttie

Re: the sound at 1:26:56, it's fine for like the first two or three seconds but by the time it rolled into 1:27:00 I was like, that's a bit too much. The higher pitch it goes the worse it gets. Not nails on a chalkboard bad but definitely a headphone warning bad.

A Baby Loaf of Tillamook Smoked Medium Cheddar

"i worked on the guitar hero games, the first 3, the third one was guitar hero aerosmith" yes because there isn't a guitar hero 3 that literally came out a year before that one

AimLikeFish

The only reason i subbed to your Patreon is because my monkey brain wanted instant gratification and access to your video. After basically being glued to the screen for the entirety of the video, i cant bring myself to chancel the subscription again. I feel as if that was the plan all along. Well done, great horrible, rabbit hole. Also, after having watched the video, this tweet somehow seems funny or foreboding. I don't know: https://twitter.com/TommyTallarico/status/1483124946989576193?s=20&t=jG033lg4RgUYYVywsSPTLQ

Paul Zuber

"Tommy Tallarico Accountability Simulator 2022" is not something I had anticipated, but I cannot deny that it is peak Hbomb content.

Matt Bigelow

1:26:56 noise doesn't bother me. But, as a person who escaped the gaming industry, this feels so familiar, there are so many low level versions of this asshole who don't have the money to commit to the con, and they are exhausting and infuriating.

Brian Haberer

I had that issue in Premiere Pro where sound cuts out for certain clips after exporting.... to work around it, I would render all of the audio in the timeline before exporting. It was messy as hell, but audio would no longer cut out in the final export!

Sheeb

To be honest this felt kinda mean spirited... up untill the moment where it didn't and I went "wow, fuck that guy!"

Kusy

Huh! Well, I never played Roblox, and I've been hearing vaguely for years about something or other happening to it and longtime players saddened at losing a childhood playground, but I never went and got any clarification as to what went on. I'm super curious, I'll see you after work!

Crescent Minor

I thought the sound suited the change to actual crimes, wasn't offputting for me. Didn't notice the music in the video positively or negatively, but the video as a whole was great, a very bonkers(tm) story.

Robin C

'Pathological liar' is one of those terms that sounds more clinically precise than it really is, but I'm not sure he would actually qualify as one. The core distinction seems to be that a pathological liar will lie compulsively even when there *isn't* any clear benefit or motive to them doing so, and all of Tommy's lies (the seventy billion that you talk about, anyway) seem pretty squarely self-interested. He seems to be addicted to that conversational dynamic of upselling himself – if someone prompts him with his earlier lie about having been on MTV's Cribs, he compulsively has to double-up on it and say "A couple of times!" He always has to be at least a step more impressive than the person he's talking to is prepared for, so that he can get that little "wow" and feed it to his malnourished and croaking sense of self. Anyway, great video! I found myself shrinking in on myself and clutching at my face out of secondhand embarrassment for that contemptible dipshit, willing the ground to swallow him and me and our entire wretched species into the grateful silence of the all-consuming earth. 10/10

Because Goodbye

I kinda like The Sound. Sorry Kat. It reminds me of a Daft Punk song.

Antipaganda

The sound at 1:26:56 didn't bother me at all.

Zanforian

I like the music, and the sound at 1:26:56 is fine.

SilverWolf

Excellent video. I knew the World Record Company was used a lot for PR and such but I thought at least there'd be record-keeping and evidence! Big money corrupts everything I guess. Tommy is also now one of my favourite characters on this silly planet. Always love someone who, as an attempt at not getting charged with a crime, incriminates themselves in a different, worse crime that they didn't actually commit. Chef's kiss. Also, I personally love the sound at 1:26:56 and would take a bath in it for an entire day quite happily

Telyn Z.

I love the parallels with the Rick Dyer video at the conclusion. Maybe you could have a context link or small reference to it for new viewers who liked this video? Still think that it's one of your best

itspaddyd

at the 52 minute mark it seems like a preposterous lie to anyone who knows basically anything about metroid. Prime in particular has ALL of its weapons based on classic metroid weapons, so the idea that he inspired devs to design weapons based on legacy metroid upgrades as an american outsider is laughable. if he'd said this lie about Echos this would've been much more believable.

Upscale Furry Trash

This guy is.... WHAT?

Keef Baker

GREAT loved it, anyone sad about the robotic aneurysm noise needs to harden up (but hey I’m a Brian Eno fan) - at 1:29:06 did you mean to say “whether you WORKED on Cribs”? as opposed to “appeared on”? Forgive me if I missed something. But that query is minor; it’s great, my head was spinning and I questioned the longterm benefit of my own artistic integrity.

Geraldine Quinn

same problem here

lexxels

I LOVE IT.

Geraldine Quinn

HAHA yeah I loved that sound, hit me with that menacing robot cricket.

Geraldine Quinn

Hey, it's me Tony Tellerico! Love the video!! Sorry, some of that was a lie. :(

Benj

That “my mother is very proud of me” bit makes me feel profoundly sad. Its obviously very hard to feel too bad for a pathological liar and serial credit thief, but man, I’m at a stage in my life where I find myself exaggerating my career achievements to my parents in small ways because I’m insecure about my own success, even for things I’m genuinely proud of. While demonstrably he’s doing this for clout, money, and the potential money that comes from clout, a tiny piece of myself lurches towards that guy when he uses that joke over and over and OVER. I don’t literally think he’s insecure about his mother’s approval, but he keeps using this self-disparaging joke that isn’t funny and barely garners a response for… what? Credibility? I don’t know man, it bums me out. I keep reminding myself that working in creative fields, you don’t have to be a rockstar for your work to matter or be meaningful. He’s *already got* the waterfall.

Robin Bailey

god what do you mean this video was about roblox fuck i forgot

IceboundWitch

Truly expected one of the other records to be 'most prolific liar'

Sarah Cook

going through all that and then getting hit by the reminder of the intellivision stuff Now With More Context was like getting run over by a car.

IceboundWitch

Also I'm so sorry Kat, but I actually love the sound at 1:26:56 because it sounds like I'm decending into a deeper layer of Hell which is what watching this video feels like at this point. It's a completely immersive experience!

Neonstalgia

I'd say this feels like a very "classic" Hbomb delving into obscure madness video. Love it. Chef's kiss. Mwah. However, I feel like I'm gently poking a hornets nest here, with each angry hornet representing yet more time to be spent on this video, but: was there any chance at getting Joey's take on all of this? Hbomb claims that there's no real way to know the truth as to who did what or how involved Tommy was in the creation of the "Oof" (let alone any of the other pieces Joey seems to have been the sole creator of), but there is at least one person who would have something to say about it and that's Joey Kuras. I'm certain that you (probably Kat) reached out for comment, and I assume Joey chose not to respond or didn't want to be involved, which is absolutely his perogative. I do feel it would be nice (perhaps in that small bit where Hbomb mentions Joey's kept quiet, I'm sorry I didn't mark the timestamp) to at least mention that Joey chose not to be a part of the conversation. At least that would give closure on knowing one of the few people who deserves a chance to speak here did have the chance to, as opposed to being yet another perspective lost to history.

Neonstalgia

Was paying attention to the music of the video because you mentioned Kat's feedback. I feel like the music is a bit all over the place, at least in the beginning of the video, I feel like it gets better later. Really loved the video though! Excited to see the final version :D

frienby

As a longtime fan of glitch and harsh noise music, the sound at 1:26:56 is music to my ears. Take that as you will! <3

skiplogic

Ages ago, I went to see Video Games Live when it came to Austin(I still have a signed souvenir booklet) and while I'm sure the show was great, the clearest memory I have is of Tommy's opening patter. It went something like, "It's so fun to be in Texas, I don't know why people say yall are violent," and whatever was going to come next was cut off by an audience member shouting, loudly enough for pretty much the entire auditorium to hear which is very impressive, "KILL THOSE PEOPLE." I admit I feel a bit bad for the guy because he could only flounder for the following several seconds, because that was by far the funniest fucking thing that happened that whole show and the entire place just kind of lost it for a bit.

Dana Starling

that was a good video !! i'm gonna love watching it again lmaoo

Honeyxilia

Hey Harry, I sometimes get the impression you feel anxious about your output frequency or the length of your videos. I imagine a triple-decker montage of you tossing and turning in bed while days tear off a calendar and YouTube’s upload button dolly zooms over the horizon. If that is ever the case, I want you to know you’re doing fine, man. You’ve essentially become a documentary filmmaker, creating two or three feature-length productions a year. That is, like, downright prolific. The algorithm forever hungers, naturally, but speaking as one rando who enjoys your work, I am content to wait. A month, six months, a year, or more. It’s okay. You make good stuff, and it’s worth the wait. One day you’ll publish your last video, maybe because you got bored or because you did, in fact, die. Either way, content yourself with the knowledge that you’ll leave behind a beautiful body—of work. Have a lovely day.

Amon

I also wasn't aware that this sound has a specific name or origin, but as an archivist I'm super happy to see larger conversations around digital preservation coming up (you're the second youtuber I've seen in like the last month talking about this). There are specific video game archives at some public US universities that I know of, but I don't know how much ephemera around game development they keep. It would be interesting to ask them.

Elaine Speer

Guinness should replace his stricken record for a new one titled "Most prolific exaggerator and maybe just flat-out liar (We don't know, we don't really check these things)"

Cubik

Issue: Starting at 1:34:39 the audio cuts out in a few places.

Professional Void Screamer

I didn’t find the 1:26:56 sound too loud. But as a sound designer and someone trying to get into video game sound design, I just wanna say I appreciate you making this video. We do a job that’s highly specialized and specific, and easy to overlook for the average person, but I feel like we can often make or break games, with the sounds we give players as feedback for their actions. Sometimes the sounds are so good that our bosses decide to take credit! So it really means a lot to have something like this spotlighted. That’s all I wanted to say, I can’t wait to see the finished video.

Tetrad

There's some weird audio cutting out around 1:34:38 for me, damn you Adobe Premiere! Disappointed that I didn't hear the phrase "stolen gaming valor" once, otherwise thoroughly entertained.

Danikov

make the 1:26:56 sound louder you coward

Oliver Huang

Great video! I think the message at the end is really important, it's crazy to see Talreco repeatedly digging himself deeper for no discernible benefit besides ego. I wonder which sound library Roblox got the sound effect from. It would be funny if the sound effect came from a legit CD and the whole legal snafu was over an effect they already had the rights to. That said, I imagine the lawyers would have noticed if that was the case.

Great video! One question I had during the whole thing was whether you attempted to reach out to Joey Kuras? I suspect he would want to say nothing but it still felt like an "obvious" thing missing from the video.

Hobothehill

Holy crap. What a rabbit hole! Fantastic video. Script really grabbed and held on to my very soul. As for the sfx at 1hr26min56sec, it's spicy. It's different and feels uncommon, like a relic of the 16bit era. I'm all for it. IF there were anything to add to the video, I'd be highly interested to know whether the original 'oof' emitter were aware that it was their voice. Now THAT would be a conclusion to end on.

Ólafur Aronsson

Spent the first few minutes trying to work out the timeline of this video. How is he filming in the garage on a set that got taken down over a year ago, when this is a rabbit hole he fell down a couple of months ago? ie I'm a fool and nice super imposing there!

Kae Hanrott

Great video, can't wait to see the inevitable niche e-celeb freak out/ threat of legal action from Tallarico when it goes public.

Laura Laplace

The sheer whiplash of my initial reaction being, "Oh hey yeah I watched that guy on G4/TechTV forever ago, cool!" to the existential dread by the end of realizing that this grifter is using the same obfuscation tactics that people are currently using to dismantle democracies across the world is just.......yeah.

Gordon Adam

I should be asleep right now but I'm watching this instead and the PS1 Aladdin game at 41:50 is one I played a pirated copy of at some relatives's house in Italy so thanks for that that was worth staying up for =P And as for the part of the actual video at that timecode: frankly, owning a company that was involved in the development of a game *should* qualify you as having an incentive to see the game succeed that *should* warrant you disclosing that involvement, even if you personally did not do anything on that game. And especially if someone else who worked on the show WAS credited as being involved! My brother was big on Roblox in 2010 when he was a teenager. Disappointed to see what capitalist hellscape it's become now; good thing he didn't get deep enough into it to sink money in! (as far as I know...) Sonic Spinball, which came out before Sonic 3, was composed by Howard Drossin, an in-house composer for Sega of America at the time. Guess what his nationality is. (There's also the US version of Sonic CD, but I don't know what Spencer Nilssen's nationality is. Also while I have... concerns about Yuji Naka's and Tommy Tallarico's claims that boil down to very busy developers generally not knowing about (or remembering after 30 years) what the final version of a game looks like and people (especially Americans) having a fundamental misunderstanding of how pop music is actually made, all the studio producers that *are* credited on Sonic 3 are also American, so.) Update: I've finished the video. Good. Thank you. We need to drill that last point home, especially now that certain types of games are being exploited by fraudulent-copyright trolls who know nobody will care for them. Like with early film, there's a lot of early game history that was intentionally obscured at the time for commercial reasons due simply to not having credits. I'm still upset that the guy who wrote those Japanese gaming history books a few years ago was a monster to his staff. And sites like MobyGames are incomplete because there's too much work and poor documentation. Nintendo of America had a multi-generational list of games for their systems on their website before the Wii U was released, and Sony of Japan removed theirs with the launch of the PS5. Raymond Chen, a programmer at Microsoft who, among many other things, was responsible for ensuring 16-bit Windows games worked on Windows 95, repeatedly points out in a freely downloadable appendix to his book The Old New Thing that gaming companies in the US literally stopped caring about a title after about six months — "they've already made their money". And that was in the 1990s! And gaming history YouTube channels continue to peddle urban legends and conspiracy theories that can be disproven by just *playing the game*, or even a modicum of common sense. And as someone involved with a video game music website now, this work is not getting easier. (And the noise did not annoy me.)

Pietro Gagliardi

Absolutely fascinating. I am happy to wait for more crazy rabbit holes in the future. BTW, the audio cut out for me at 1:34:40 and 1:35:30.

Potemkin Village

Holy shit I'm going to have to send this to my game dev professors, the wild ride through history (and ESPECIALLY that but about history at the end) would probably be a great resource for students

Noah Gilston

Pausing about 15 minutes in to thumbs up the use of Lego Island music. Park theme is a gem.

Vex Fidel

hey idk if you're aware but 1:34:38-1:34:44 and 1:35:28-1:35:35 are silent. hope it's not premiere being evil

Jake

This is so fucking good.

Nel Meyrink

I was assuming you were just saying some things that were too silly for a courtroom

Natalie Mason

No problems with 1:26:56 personally. And man, I love this rabbit hole.

Sallie Drazzi

oh no

Hbomb

Thank you!!! I'm gonna maybe have to play Rec again to get some footage for something, I can't wait

Hbomb

Not finished with the video but I love all the FF8 music.

ArcaneVoid

A video about Harris googling the "oof" sound, then never sleeping again.

OrangeFlavouredPineapple

I. Uh. Missed that whole Joey Kuras reveal because I recognized that bit of soundtrack from FFVIII and tried to remember where I'd stashed my original PC copy and then feel sad I sold my original PS copy because I was poor at the time. Then I had to feel sad that Nobuo Uematsu has retired because he once said at a Distant Worlds concert I attended in Seattle that FFVIII was his favorite soundtrack he ever did, though apparently he waffles between that one and FFVI. I guess I'm biased because I never owned a Super Nintendo. We had a Sega Genesis which is objectively the better system but why was Nintendo always more popular? My brother still has our Genesis, it's champ. Oh hey look they made one of those mini console thingies for it, goodbye rest of my paycheck! Okay sorry I'm back.

Professional Void Screamer

This is the only time I've ever commented on a video on Patreon, and it's just to say that I recognized the background music from the game Recettear, and it made me very nostalgic and delighted. Have a great day <3

lurrkingly

What a wild topic I didn't even know was a thing! The video is a ride, thanks! Also I didn't have any issue with that specific sound later in the vid

Toni Carter

At first I didn't believe this was real. No way a man spent months making a feature length documentary about a sound that lasted less than a second. Holy shit though, was that amazing

Aurora H.

I saw the title "Roblox Oof" and had no idea what it meant, but knew it didn't matter. I will watch every hbomberguy video because even if I never watch or play the show/game, I know I will enjoy the video.

Naomi Hatchman

Can't speak for everyone obvs but the 1:26:56 sound is fine and cool imo

Caden Meyer

I felt really gaslit when hbomb was like “I don’t get what the problem is”

Kat Lo

THANK YOU

Kat Lo

I don't need to go into work tomorrow anyway. As for the 1:26:56 bit I'm not sure I can hear anything at all, but in fairness my speakers are odd. I feel like I hear a random high pitched beep?? Idk two other people said to get it out, I side with them.

Chase H

I really, I really think about like, is it unfair to keep upping the number of minutes creators are responsible for, i just do, love, hearing like Way way too long of thoughts on a subject it gets me through basically whole shifts at work whole drives, I like hearing the voices I like for a long, time. I hope it isn't super hateful

Andrew Hill

So in the first 8mins we find out where the sound effect came from but there's still a whole HOUR AND A HALF left. Im scared for what's gonna come next.

Joshua Egan

You monster! I was laughing my ass off in the first 5 minutes. Fantastic stuff, as always

Hugo Prevost

didn’t want to sleep anyway

Noclip

i agree, the sound at 1:26:56 is very uncomfortable. im pretty sensitive to high pitch whining type noises and that definitely doesnt feel good

Dawn

Oh goodie, something to enable my crippling insomnia.

Amon

I was about to go to sleep after staying up too late already but I guess not any more lol

Poorly Fleshed Skeleton

Kat is right, the sound at 1:26:56-1:27:03 is pure pain

Selene

So glad I'm not the only one still awake
