GRAPHS BONUS VIDEO!
Added 2020-03-31 05:56:36 +0000 UTC
Hey folks! I hope you're all doing well, what with the major global crisis and everything.
Please find enclosed a patreon-exclusive video about Graphs - what they are, how they work, how I use them, and how I've changed using them.
Since the recent outbreak means I can't make a trip I'd planned to the USA to interview people for RWBY, I decided to take a lot of extra time getting this video just right. And frankly, it's my favourite video I've ever made. Normally it takes me six months to be able to go back and decide if I like something I made, but I like this one right now. It's almost a shame only patrons can see it, but the secrets contained within must remain hidden. You'll see what I mean when you’ve watched it.
For the RWBY video, as I mentioned, I had a 'research trip' of sorts planned, but now entry into the states from the UK is banned or something (I think maybe it's still possible to get in but not advisable). Obviously, if I'm going to be seriously investigating the problems with the company that made it, there's a lot of due diligence I want to be doing. These are people's lives and I'm not interested in doing a hit piece. So, I can't do the sort of work I want to be doing, at least for a little while. However a huge part of the video, namely a critical analysis of the show itself, is still very doable. My current plan is to make that part as one video, release it, move on to other doable projects, then return to the deeper problems with the company in a future video, when it makes logistical sense to do the travel.
Thanks for sticking around during this tumultuous time. Thankfully (and by that, I mean ‘sadly’) my lifestyle is roughly similar to living in quarantine so I'm doing relatively OK. Stay indoors if you can! Also, moisturize. This won’t help with the infection, but it’s good for your skin.
- Hbomb
I don't usually go through Patreon. Like, I throw money at people who deserve it and I just sleep better or something. Your videos however have become some of the few types of content I actually seek out and consume, absolutely ignoring my 5k+ mailbox of unread Patreon posts.
Thank you for taking the time to make something visually appealing while also being so absolutely entertaining.
Please keep making videos, and feel free to take your time to do so.
I just felt I had to say this, and to thank you.
Hope the cake was delicious <3

May be you need to use something like Python notebooks for visualization, then capture the screen and somehow mix it with your videos. Plugging JSON data to video editing software is clearly using an instrument that barely suits the task.
IMHO.

This video, especially the part where you jump up and level a revolver at the screen before summarily executing me, made me spit out my tasty beverage. This occurred more often for me over the course of viewing this video than it usually does. I made this graph to prove it too! Just kidding. I'm exceedingly lazy. Besides, it's the thought that counts. Well done. xD

I was so curious about this video after you hinted about it in the War on Christmas Response video that I became a patron just to see it, and I'm not disappointed! You're right, it's some great work, and I'm excited to see more videos like this!

At the end of your updated War on Christmas video, you half-joked about how this video is probably the best video you've ever made. And honestly, I have to agree. This video is excellent. I'm also super excited for your implied authority of data/revealing your trick of the graph in the war on Christmas video.

I love graphs. Visualizations, and maps which show data like a graph (incidentally I went to school for this last bit so I am bias). So this video is a sold 10/14 or a perfect 5 out of 7 (a 7 out of 7 would be like a -2, don't ask) from me. The bit about JSON files was particularly interesting to me because now I want to know what the fuck a JSON file is, how I use it, and how I could personally replicate this effect because of my nonsensical love of data visualization. As another aside, there are a lot of books written on that subject and you managed to capture the essence of it in a relatively short video with a great table gag.

I became a patron specifically to watch this video, and it was totally worth it. 1) That's a really good point. I think I'm going to try to keep that up as well, so people still know how to go looking for data and read papers and studies, but produce my own visuals when something really matters or it lends an air of professionalism
2) Someone sent it to my PO Box! I have no idea!

I have two thoughts about this that are winning out over the rest right now:
1) I think the raw graphs and tables were interesting because it not only lent authenticity to what you were saying, but also because there was a low key level of "hey, btw, this is how to read and understand tables" which had value imo
2) I really want that planet shirt, where did you get it?

Hi Hbomb, Nice video, Little disapointed to hear you're moving away from the raw graphs and data from research, but I do understand why you're doing it, I honestly just liked it because it felt more authetic and less manipulated, but I realise that it's just a batter of estetics as you'll still be using referenced matterial that we can read ourselves.

Reminds me of a quote I saw the other day: "Numbers aren’t facts. They’re the result of a lot of subjective choices that have to be documented transparently and in detail before you can even begin to consider treating the output as fact. How data is gathered — and whether it is gathered the same way each time — matters." (https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/why-its-so-freaking-hard-to-make-a-good-covid-19-model)

2020-04-02 02:26:35 +0000 UTC
Hi Hbomb, cool video! If you're looking to make making graphs easier on yourself, consider looking into using the programming language R and ggplot. There's pretty great resources for making and animating graphs. This book is a good introduction https://socviz.co/ and you can use gganimate to get animated graphs https://www.r-graph-gallery.com/animation.html
Just something to consider. Sounds like getting nice looking graphs in after effects is a bit of a pain and this might be easier.

I didn't know what RWBY was so I googled it and the second sentence of the first review started, "Normally I'd feel weird watching something with female characters as protagonists..." So I know we're in for a treat. I have VRV so I feel like maybe I should watch it so I know what I'm getting into...? Is it good? I haven't watched an anime since... Yu Yu Hakusho,,, Rurouni Kenshin? No, that can't be right. Dragonball? Wait, Dragonball Z! What? They made more Dragonballs... Am... Am I old now?
Anyway, I really just wanted to come down here to say that as an engineer that writes reports using graphs all day, literally all I do is "screenshot" the graph from whatever white paper I'm referencing and paste in my report. It's much easier than... whatever "adobe" is.

I also want to shout out the time you take to explain facets of your craft. I don't always understand 100 percent of it, but even what I don't understand helps me be appreciative of the care you put into your work.

Another interesting way that Bar Graphs can distort data is with relative increases. Minute physics brought this up with the example of two bar graphs, one showing a rise between 201 and 202 (obviously seems very small), and one showing a rise between 1 and 2 (an apparent doubling). Even though the ACTUAL data change is exactly the same the visual difference is amazing!

"manipulating" data implies we're tricking the data in some way. I prefer the term "molesting" data, because no self-respecting datum would ever try to say what Prager-U wants it to say.
2020-03-31 12:07:40 +0000 UTC
I have two book recommendations for you: (1) The Visual Display of Quantitative Information by Edward Tufte; and (2) Show Me the Numbers: Designing Tables and Graphs to Enlighten by Stephen Few. These books will help frame your future video because they lay out important do and don'ts for creating data visualizations, which are framed around revealing rather than obscuring data. Also, they will help you think about ways to improve your data visualizations in future videos.

In any case, it's always fantastic to see the growth of creators and that's what I've always liked with you if how willing you are to go back to your previous work and say that you could have done better. Stay safe, and may Soybek be with you.
