War on Christmas: A Measured Response [BACKER VERSION]

It's cathartic to see PJW get interrupted while, because of the video quality, looking kinda like a twelve year old somehow? It really highlights that he is just child who has continuously been spoken over all of his life so he decided to make angry videos about trending subjects where he can yell and look like a macho cool man even though he still is the insecure little boy on the inside. Someone who spends their time hating things and explaining why people and places are shit probably has a lot of unresolved self-hatred and insecurity. PJW mystifies me because he simultaneously looks like he could be calm and kind and debate against what he spouts on his channel. I want to investigate further but its hard because of how offensively he slaps unrelated content together in his videos. (like ffs in his simps video he Showed a clip of a scene from a findom scenario and later played a slowed down version of venus in furs .. It is just so jarring to see a specific kink and a 60's song about exploring kink slammed between his vitriol ).. The comment section actually makes me feel physically ill. No thoughtful comments at all.. Just an equal amount of unbridled hatred, fear and bible quotes. I often question myself when I watch content creators I agree with.. Am I just essentially doing the same thing but not realizing it? I think in a way, yes.. But I see more thoughtful and caring comments and people who seems like they want to think deeply and critically about the issues discussed and many more people being like "wow this side of youtube is refreshing and rational! the hatred and racism elsewhere was making me upset and depressed". There are some hateful comments for sure but mostly I see the worst being cheeky humor around something actually deeply unnerving about what a far right/ conservative commentator or content creator said. I am prepared to go deeper into the mind of the right wing content and the viewers but I realized I need to create a seperate youtube because having PJW videos come in my recommended videos between Hbomberguy, contrapoints, big joel, lyndsy ellis and others felt intrinsically like what it feel like to have someone dump crude engine oil on a beautiful and detailed painting. I really commend you for stomaching the process sifting through all of the right-wing media and rhetoric to create this piece of work.

One thing I think is kind of missing here--coming from the UK, I don't know that you're familiar with the absolutely bizarre capitalist Christianity that is evangelicalism here. Every one of my relatives are Pentecostals from the Deep South, obsessed with “traditional” holidays, so videos like this are v relevant to me and the intense polarization I experience with them. A lot of this information is well-known, but also helpful to refresh on; and there are pieces of information I never knew about, like the x-mas bit. You mention around the 40 minute mark this idea that if an argument is extended to nefarious purpose, the argument should be disregarded, no matter how reasonable it sounds. It reminded me that a through-line of my childhood religious education was Satan as the great deceiver, such that anything that was not grounded in the Lord (the Bible, effectively) was suspect. If that is not a unique experience to myself, it does not feel like a hard jump to get to adults with similar childhood experiences being receptive to a similar paradigm.

It makes a lot of sense that Irving Berlin, a Jewish person living in hyper-Christian 40s America would write White Christmas. It’s one of the less hymn-like Christmas carols. It’s a way for non-religious folk to sing about the holiday season without referencing Jesus, Nativity, the Virgin Mary etc. Without Irving Berlin, it would probably be Silent Night and Little Drummer Boy songs on an infinite loop. That's a really fair concern and I'm glad you raised it. I think with some issues what really helps change people's minds isn't necessarily an empathetic phrasing or a logical enough argument (though that works well sometimes as well), but instead a focus on giving people a 'way out' of their thinking, a chance to escape from it, basically. And if you show people who believe in a thing exactly how and why they're being lied to, as opposed to specifically saying they're personally wrong and foolish, that can be much more powerful. Those were my thoughts for this issue, at least - when I tried to be more straightforwardly empathetic and just write convincing counterarguments, and aimed the video at potential believers, it felt condescending, especially to religious people, and I don't like doing that. I often do make videos with the goal of convincing people who think differently in mind, but my goal here was to fully try to understand why the War on Christmas sticks around every year and show my findings. I was wondering how I could make people who see it that way thnik otherwise, and in the end I came to the conclusion that the most convincing thing you could do (on this particular subject, when people's religion feels like it might be at stake) is to document the journey itself, instead of try to directly appeal. I think stopping to point out that the topic is largely a literal marketing tactic, or a trick to make you not think about other things, showing how other Christians already think differently from this, and showing my own learning process, is an effective way of making a point, but I take the idea this was a mistake seriously and I'm going to monitor how the war on christmas supporters react to the video when it comes out, and maybe get back to you about its effects and see if I was wrong.

the wildest part of all these arguments is saying that christmas is a national holiday and so implying christianity is the national religion and to remove xtianity stuff is anti-american when one of the whole points of americas founding is religious freedom and that there is no 'national religion' that should get preference over others. also like as if the free market making its own decisions (see: all the examples being stores changing stuff) is somehow an attack on national federal identity and not just capitalist marketing decisions. reminds me of the way alt righters complain about demonetization and companies pulling their advertising as political correctness. such a base misunderstanding of the definition of a federal right to freedom of speech meaning the govt cant put u in jail for saying things (except for a million caveats anyway) actually meaning that criticism or privately owned platforms choosing to not include certain viewpoints are being evil anti-americans

Quick Note: There seems to be a little confusion about the film "Holiday Inn." The film isn't specifically a Christmas movie, but it's about an inn that is only open for holidays. The film features songs about Christmas, New Years, Lincoln's Birthday, Valentine's Day, Washington's Birthday, Easter, Independence Day, and Thanksgiving. Not that that undercuts the point of the video, but the song "Happy Holidays" itself is not specifically a Christmas song in the context of the film, but a song about all holidays in general.

I really enjoyed this video. It sucks for me as someone who is a Christian but also a leftist to have this conversation with conservative Christians that no one is erasing your beliefs by not referencing them in capitalism. If "Jesus is the reason for the season" and you believe that strongly, why do you feel threatened when commercials and stores (which should never be a reference point for your religion in the first place) don't make you feel religious enough? That's on you, bucko.

The video loads painfully slow, and outright refuses to play 57 seconds into the video. I understand switching to vimeo, but at my slow internet speeds (ohio yay), the video is flat-out impossible to play :(

is it okay for us to rip the mp4 off vimeo? I used to add the unlisted youtube link and download it in the YouTube app so I could watch offline (as I watch a lot of YouTube on the train) but obviously I can't do it like that with vimeo.

Never thought I'd see Rocking Mr. E in another video. I don't know who told him that hair and beard combination was a good idea. Also excited to see James Martin in a video.

So, on my phone it links out to Vimeo and it works, but from Chrome on my PC it tries to play as an embed with no link out and I get this error: "Sorry Because of its privacy settings, this video cannot be played here."

Link works for me, its just a bit odd on mobile. Doesnt open the vimeo app (which I have), but just another tab with the video on it. Inconvenient, but not a major issue

is there a way to get this to open in the Vimeo app/browser, or is it limited to the Patreon page?
