Only Idiots Do Things Once

Armed with a little more knowledge and a lot more fire power I'm determined to get the lead screw right. And as expected, despite being a repeat project, it went completely... unexpectedly. πŸ™ƒ

Enjoy!

It has not, so that may be a big factor as well

Brandon Sander

Just curious, was the temperature of the heat treat oven ever verified?

Goose Gosselin

i should maybe add that quenching will make the plaster explode (or implode?) instantly

Nico Chiaro

me neither but i am doing gold stuff for fun and it seems a natural thing to do, since youve got that badass kiln now. i β€žsupposeβ€œ it would prevent flexing

Nico Chiaro

Really, I think you are twisting the facts..

Matt B

Thanks. Now I understand why I couldn't find it.

Jim Ruddy

🀣 🀣 That would be a good test! I keep the gibs pretty snug but still something i didn't consider.

Brandon Sander

no doubt!

Brandon Sander

If i did it right it would be boring 😁

Brandon Sander

I dont know how much I care about the rest at this point. I just want to use the damned thing! haha

Brandon Sander

I did try this originally but didn't have a powerful enough coil 😞

Brandon Sander

Maybe I'll get a hair and try it again... eventually haha

Brandon Sander

Huh! I've never heard of that!

Brandon Sander

That one was really hard to find and they don't make it anymore unfortunately. Nobody does from what I can tell. It's called the Platte River 153326.

Brandon Sander

I probably spent more on material in the 4 attempts than just buying a new screw 😁

Brandon Sander

amen!

Enough foreplay, just put it in πŸ˜‚

Steven Bierlink

I love it when things go 3 1/2 times better than I was expecting them to.

Max Goldstein

Fortunately, the raw material is free, your engineering degree gratis, and your time has no value, otherwise, buying one would have made sense πŸ˜‚ We are, of course, grateful for your martyrdom πŸ™Œ

James Riordan

Noticed the two handed guide you were using with your band saw to keep your fingers uninjured, do you recall where you got it and what it is called. I thought I have pretty good Google skills, but they are failing me today. Congrats on getting your lead screw replaced. Curious about not achieving the metal hardness you were going for.

Jim Ruddy

have you considered hardening it embedded in plaster? there are some really hard variants used in dental

Nico Chiaro

So hot it's cold and repeated failures for no perceptible reason? I wouldn't wish it on you, but still so relatable.

Michael Faragher

Hey, the intro is back! 😁 I must say - your persistrance with this thing is inspiring if nothing else. It also goes to show that something doesn't need to be absolutely textbook 100% perfect to be functional. Glad you got through it in the end. ..Now you just have the rest of the lathe to fix... πŸ˜‚

Erik D. Radzius

One last thing induction hardening is a good thing.

Matt B

Your doing good at screwing up...πŸ˜‰ Best part of your show is, it is real. Thanks for all your patience from your fans

Matt B

Just the perfect pick me up, already guessing when someone on tiktok is gonna steal it, i give it 3 days

Manuel Preuner

Anything worth doing, is worth doing twice, or thrice, or.....nevermind, I don't know where I was going with that! Good job powering through that one, and glad it worked out OK! The dovetails/gib should resist it, but it would be interesting to put an indicator on the top of your cross slide, and see if the runout of the lead screw "lifts" the cross slide as the peak of the bow passes through 12 o-clock? I was gifted a surface grinder ( it had been tipped over ) and the cross feed lead screw had a hell of a dog leg in it. It made the whole table of the grinder hop at the high spot. But the table on this grinder ( and many others ) is only held down by mean old Mr. Gravity, so there is nothing to stop it. I lucked out and straightened it in a hydraulic press and it grinds beautifully now. On second thought, don't even check if it's influencing the vertical plane of your cross slide......forget I mentioned it.

Jeff Loffert

Not complaining at all 😁

Brandon Sander

It could be a very short "for now" haha

Brandon Sander

You can't get it ALL done 😜

Brandon Sander

Phew.. mother of all side projects, but hey we have a very cool gear cutter, and a heat treating oven out of it!

Bryce de Haan

No more work for now!

Dave Cannon

Dang, I'm actually making progress on my own projects this week, and both you and ToT have posted new things! ;P

Rogan Creswick

You willed it into existence 😁

Brandon Sander

I was justing thinking about when the next video was gonna be posted
