(AD FREE) These Will Save My Parts

Out with the old and in with the new. I'm finally making a more camera appropriate set of soft jaws for the lathe. But whatever you do, don't ask me how long they took to make.

Enjoy!

Not a bad idea! Might make for a good side project the first time I have to go and swap them for something softer 😁

Brandon Sander

You should definitely make a tool for removing the pins without damaging either the pin or the soft jaw. Sortof like a plastic drift punch but maybe with something that slips over the steel to keep the punch aligned? A good use case for a 3d printed tool, I think

Michael P Andersen

😁 Thanks, man!

Brandon Sander

Ooo lead! I didn't think of that. Thanks James!

Brandon Sander

Absolutely Erik! Thank you again for sending them (and everything else πŸ˜‰ ) I have no doubt I'll be using them a lot. I wish I took matrix algebra at U. I had several classes that needed it for the coursework and just pieced together enough to get by. And then made the mistake of taking linear algebra my final semester 😭 I don't really know where that idea came from. Sometimes things just pop in my head!

Brandon Sander

You would honestly have a faster result with that method πŸ˜‚ I spent SOO LONG milling those out! That's exactly what a binder of drawings is for. There when you're ready!

Brandon Sander

The way I've kind of looked at it is that if there are a lot of repetitive calculations to do, there's usually a way to do them with matricies. Would be worth just being familiar enough with how they are used

Brandon Sander

The script writing in this was *chefs kiss*. The speedo joke, jaw-ometry, etc. I’m only a few minutes in and I had to stop and comment!

Louis Noel

Masterful - just great. I was fabricating a part for a vintage car restoration this morning, decided my aluminum jaw covers might mar the finish, and had to dig out a set of lead pads - love the interchangeable insert design !

James Riordan

horizontal mill or does your mill go to ? Rotate head 30 degrees CC.

Ralph McCoy

Oh Brandoon, you do spoil us 😁 When you told me you actually used the gauge pins for a project already, I doubt I would've ever guessed what the project was, and yet, as always - I'm pleasantly surprised. As well as that, the shoutout definitely made my day πŸ˜… P.S. - the matrix algebra section gave me PTSD style flashbacks to my second year of university, so thanks for that πŸ˜‚ P.P.S. - the use of the square tool for the rouded corners in the boring head is absolutely brilliant. I think I might have to borrow that idea at some point.

Side note, i am returning home with final materials needed to complete the foundry. As fun as it looks to machine all those pockets, it just seems perfect for an attempt with a casting and machined to dimension. May be a while yet, like all the projects i have in my 'binder o' drawings' that largely say Inheritance Machining in the bottom right corner, but i will let you know how it goes.

Kyle Wellman

Well, i now have a new subject to study in my spare time. Matrix algebra. Never heard of it, but i have a graphing calculator i bought on impulse thinking, surely this will come in handy someday. Thank you for giving me an excuse to call that thought true!

Kyle Wellman

Ditto 😁 Thanks, Mike

Brandon Sander

See, I'm one of "those guys." The ones that expect things to last forever. So when I see replaceable wear components, I like. Simple as.

Parts that claim that flute-length doesn’t matter, are shallow

Nikolaas Noyez

Oh I love steampunk. I definitely take a little inspiration from that with some of my builds 😁 Thanks!

Brandon Sander

I'm not sure I follow. How could you mill the pockets horizontally?

This video is dangerous! I choked on my burrito when you ate the jello πŸ˜‚

Beautiful design and execution as always Brandon!

Agree with Rob…early views=over sooner. The mix of materials are very Steampunkish. Wonder how you would build the Nautilus? Lots of brass, copper, rounds and chamfered edges. I sense you have a little Captian Nemo in you 😎. Thanks for another great episode.

Rvator

Instead of cutting the pockets out vertically go in horizontally ? Then clean out which ever way.

Ralph McCoy

As in

Craig Jackson

Thanks, Craig! New skills as in what not to do πŸ˜‰

Brandon Sander

Thanks man! If I'm honest that's one aspect I spend a ton of time on. It's tricky getting things to be both functional and good looking. Good luck on the puzzle!

Brandon Sander

I read your mind apparently haha yeah I think these are going to be one of my very frequently used tools. Almost ever lathe job of mine ends up needing soft jaws of some sort

Brandon Sander

True πŸ˜‚ Yeah, I'm finally getting to the point where I'm having to replace the tooling that I inherited. Not cheap!

Brandon Sander

May be your best video yet. Saw some new skills showcased.

Craig Jackson

I absolutely love how you push the extreme envelope of aesthetics in all your work and the function is (usually) perfect. Can't wait for this long weekend so I can have a go at making your captive nut puzzle. Thanks for everything you do. This channel is truly inspiring.

Jeremy Henry

I was a while back gonna comment about maybe making some soft jaws. Never got around to it but here you are having made some really cool jaws. They are more useful in a manual machine shop and I am guessing you’ll be getting a good bit of use out of them even if they likely won’t pay off in time investment any time soon like the rounding fixture

Drokles21

Only problem with getting the video's sooner is there over sooner. :( Sorry about the broken mills Brandon. Expenses will be climbing LOL

Rob

Damn this work that keeps me from watching someone else work!
